Book excerpt: There was a surge in the number of employed people looking for another job in the United Kingdom in the 1980s. In this paper, we present a panel analysis of aggregate data and a cross-section analysis of individual data on on-the-job search in the United Kingdom. We find evidence that the availability of jobs and wage dispersion increase on-the-job search. The importance of these results is twofold. First, to the extent that on-the-job search responds to the tightness of the labor market, it can contribute to explaining the observed cyclical behavior of the unemployment outflow rate. Second, as shown in Fuentes (2002), to the extent that changes in on-the-job search can be explained by factors other than labor market tightness, such as wage dispersion, these shift the unemployment-vacancies relationship (the Beveridge curve) and therefore have a role to play in the determination of unemployment.

This seminal book offers not only an answer regarding how to gain competitive advantage through people, but also a brand new, untapped human resource--psychological capital, or simply PsyCap. Generated from both the positive psychology movement and the authors' pioneering work on positive organizational behavior, PsyCap goes beyond traditionally recognized human and social capital. But PsyCap is not a vague or unscientific concept: to be included in PsyCap, a given positive construct must be based on theory, research, and valid measurement, must be open to development, and must have measurable performance impact. The positive constructs that have been determined to best meet these PsyCap criteria, efficacy (confidence), hope, optimism, and resiliency, are covered in separate chapters in Psychological Capital. We acquire individual-level data from the 2009 National Employment Survey of Chile, and use an innovative non-linear estimation which examines the influences of two individual-level factors: job searchers' searching efforts and their previous work experience. It is found that whether one searcher is actively searching and whether the searcher has been employed before both significantly affect the job searching outcomes. To be specific, actively searching for jobs with resumes, social networks, as well as public assistance, provides more opportunities to successfully find a job. Similar consequences may occur for someone without previous work experience. Furthermore, the disparities in the job searching results are also affected by multiple individual characteristics, such as age, gender, and education level. For example, active searching only significantly helps men but not women, and those people with average instead of higher education backgrounds find jobs, while previous work experience can help women or those who receive higher education find jobs more easily. Relevant policy implications are also discussed.

The aim of this paper is to examine those factors which have an effect on the job-search intensity of Turkish unemployed job seekers. For this purpose we use the data on individual job seekers obtained from the Household Labor Force Surveys of 2000 and 2001. We examine the effects of personal, household and labor market characteristics on the job search intensity. The analyses are carried out for the full data as well as by considering gender and residence dimension. According to our general results, urban residents are more likely to search more intensively than rural residents. It is also observed that females search less intensively than males. Increases in education level seem to increase the job search intensity. There is an inverse-U shaped relation between age and job search intensity. While living in the most developed regions of Turkey, i.e. Marmara and Aegean increase the intensity of job search, living in the least developed regions of East and South-East Anatolia decline the job search intensity. Increases in unemployment rate increase the job search intensity, but increases in the level of GDP declines the job search intensity. Further, there is an inverse-U shaped relation between population density and job-search intensity.

Book excerpt: After millions of migrants moved from China’s countryside into its sprawling cities a unique kind of ‘informal’ urban enclave was born – ‘villages in the city’. Like the shanties and favelas before them elsewhere, there has been huge pressure to redevelop these blemishes to the urban face of China’s economic vision. Unlike most developing countries, however, these are not squatter settlements but owner-occupied settlements developed semi-formally by ex-farmers turned small-developers and landlords who rent shockingly high-density rooms to rural migrants, who can outnumber their landlord villagers. A strong state, matched with well-organised landlords collectively represented through joint-stock companies, has meant that it has been relatively easy to grow the city through demolition of these soft migrant enclaves. The lives of the displaced migrants then enter a transient phase from an informal to a formal urbanity. This book looks at migrants and their enclave ‘villages in the city’ and reveals the characteristics and changes in migrants’ livelihoods and living places. Using an interdisciplinary approach, the book analyses how living in the city transforms and changes rural migrant households, and explores the social lives and micro economies of migrant neighbourhoods. Book excerpt: The job search process is considered a complex and intensive procedure requiring investment in time and effort on behalf of job seekers. Our study attempts to explore further the effects of a number of individual characteristics on job search behavior, effort, job search outcomes, as well as, on psychological well-being. We examined these relationships using a daily diary methodology with the participation of 79 recent university graduates-job seekers in Greece at the beginning of the recent financial crisis. Our results did not support the importance of these individual characteristics on job search behavior, effort, and job search outcomes, but it supported their role of daily psychological well-being, especially their self-esteem. We discuss implications for job seekers to cultivate these skills that are related to these individual characteristics helpful in maintaining a positive psychological state during the job search period.
