Book excerpt: The tenure of Marquess Wellesley as Governor-General of the British Territories in India was a decisive one Through a policy of military campaigns and subsidiary treaties, in hsi seven years (1798-1805) he had subdued Msysore and the Mahrattas and annexed portions of Oudh, Tanjore and Carnatic. His vast military expeditions and annexations alarmed the Court of Directors of the East India Company who recalled him. But the die was cast, and British imperialism had won the battle over native rulers. The reissue of Marquess Wellesley's despatches, minutes and correspondence in 5 volumes provides much interesting material for the historian. The first volume contains documents relating to the origin of the war in Mysore, the alliance with the Nizam of Hyderabad and all the events which terminated in the death of Tipu Sultan. The second volume deals with the settlements of Mysore, Surat, Oudh; and the regulations of private trade and commerce.
