Mythology had become instead a central element in elite culture. If one did not know the stories one would not understand most of the allusions in the poets and orators, classics and contemporaries alike; nor would one be able to identify the scenes represented on the mosaic floors and wall paintings in your cultivated friends' houses, or on the silverware on their tables at dinner. Mythology was no longer imbibed in the nursery; nor could it be simply picked up from the often oblique allusions in the classics. It had to be learned in school, as illustrated by the extraordinary amount of elementary mythological information in the many surviving ancient commentaries on the classics, notably Servius, who offers a mythical story for almost every person, place, and even plant Vergil mentions. Commentators used the classics as pegs on which to hang stories they thought their students should know. A surprisingly large number of mythographic treatises survive from the early empire, and many papyrus fragments from lost works prove that they were in common use. In addition, author Alan Cameron identifies a hitherto unrecognized type of aid to the reading of Greek and Latin classical and classicizing texts--what might be called mythographic companions to learned poets such as Aratus, Callimachus, Vergil, and Ovid, complete with source references. Much of this book is devoted to an analysis of the importance evidently attached to citing classical sources for mythical stories, the clearest proof that they were now a part of learned culture. So central were these source references that the more unscrupulous faked them, sometimes on the grand scale.

Book excerpt: Among the many recent studies of the Bucolics, none has dealt systematically with the evidence, newly broached by modern scholarship, that Virgil's book may be a single unified composition in which the ten eclogues, rather than separate poems gathered and arranged, are parts worked out expressly for their places and differentiated functions in the whole. The present study, emphasizing the need for considered method, approaches the book's unity first in terms of theme. It shows that Virgil deployed themes in three registers--a bucolic, a georgic, and a civic-heroic--that develop and systematically vary through all the eclogues in the order of the book. A thematic system thus emerges in the book as a whole. It may share the traditional functions of rhetoric and music at the level of performance; but it is shown also to articulate, on reflective reading, an ambitious design in poetics. Through it, Virgil reckons with the entire tradition of epos, which he recasts from two modes into three (Hesiodic/Homeric: bucolic/Hesiodic/Homeric). He thus establishes the tripartite frame for his life's work, with its ultimate emulation of Homer. In the process, through the successive ecolgues, he also gradually transforms the bucolic mode from Sicilian (Theocritean) to Arcadian. This he conceives as a return to the source, hence a new begining that outdoes Theocritus. -- Back cover.

Matthew Santirocco provides the first new critical approach to them in English in more than two decades. Drawing on recent works on ancient and modern poetry books and using several contemporary critical methodologies, Santirocco reveals the Odes both as individual poems and as components in a larger poetic design. His reading of Horace demonstrates that the ensemble is itself an important context for understanding and appreciating the poetry. Reconstructing the history of the ancient poetry book, both Greek and Roman, Santirocco challenges certain common assumptions about its origin and development. He argues that true parallels for the Odes are not to be found in the other Augustan books, which are relatively homogeneous in content and form, but in the heterogeneous collections of Hellenistic writers. Odes I-III comprise eighty-eight poems in twelve different meters, and in tone and topic they vary widely. Avoiding the two extremes of past scholarship, which either has searched for a single underlying unity or else has denied any meaningful design, Santirocco uncovers a variety of both static and dynamic structures and shows their relevance to the literary interpretation of the poems at all levels. Ultimately, the composition of a poem and the disposition of the group are shown to be analogous activities. Odes I-III do not constitute a medley of discrete poems but, instead, approximate the unity of a single ode.
