Book The Design of Residential Areas

Download or read book The Design of Residential Areas written by Thomas Adams and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Design of Residential Areas: Basic Considerations, Principles, and Methods F all things that contribute to the welfare Of society, none is more important than the good quality Of the homes in which people live. This does not mean that welfare depends solely on houses being strong enough to provide shelter against the elements, but also that they shall be agreeable enough in their environment to give reasonable satisfaction to other human wants. The design of homes, together with their location, approaches, and surroundings, in well-arranged groups and neighborhoods, is one of the most important branches of the art Of city planning. What are the basic considerations underlying this art that apply to residential areas? What are the principles involved in its application? And what are the methods we Should employ so as to Obtain the highest degree of health, comfort, convenience, and beauty consistent with true economy? These are questions which I shall endeavor to answer in the following pages. The difficulties Of discovering answers are the very reasons for making this investigation, assigned to me by the Harvard School Of City Planning. True, it covers ground which has already been tilled and harrowed, but which needs much more cultivation in two directions. In the first place, the root causes of the weedy growth that commonly spoils the urban scene have not been fully unearthed. We need to plow deeper if we are to bring them to the surface. In the second place, the absence of any sure guidance in matters of principle and methods of design with specific reference to residential areas makes it desirable to try to see whether some such sure and definite guidance cannot be given. Book Residential Buildings

Download or read book Residential Buildings written by Günter Pfeifer and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2015-04-28 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The systematic development of building types is an important task in housing construction. A deeper understanding of the underlying building types is mandatory, both for individual designs and for the wider application and variation of tried-and-tested structures. The authors have developed an innovative, drawing-based approach for unfolding the potentials of several existing building types for the future of urban housing. The first part is dedicated to the courtyard house, in which the courtyard is used as a private outside living space. The second part deals with the popular form of the terraced house and discusses aspects of corner solutions or terraced developments as an urban design element. In the third part, the townhouse is discussed with view to variants such as single-story and apartment buildings, including aspects of privacy and public access, as well as living and working. Finally, the detached house type is considered in its potential to provide all-directional orientation of the living space. The array of solutions is presented consistently in floorplans and cross-sections drawn to scale. In a new introduction to this all-in-one compendium the authors discuss the implications of the typological approach for today's housing design.

Book Architecture for Residential Care and Ageing Communities

Download or read book Architecture for Residential Care and Ageing Communities written by Sten Gromark and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-10-19 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Architecture for Residential Care and Ageing Communities confronts urgent architectural design challenges within residential innovation, ageing communities and healthcare environments. The increasing and diversified demands on the housing market today call for alterability and adaptability in long term solutions for new integrated ways of residing. Meanwhile, an accentuated ageing society requires new residential ways of living, combining dignity, independence and appropriate care. Concurrently, profound changes in technical conditions for home healthcare require rethinking healing environments. This edited collection explores the dynamics between these integrated architectural and caring developments and intends to envision reconfigured environmental design patterns that can significantly enhance new forms of welfare and ultimately, an improved quality of life. This book identifies, presents, and articulates new qualities in designs, in caring processes, and healing atmospheres, thereby providing operational knowledge developed in close collaboration with academics, actors and stakeholders in architecture, design, and healthcare. This is an ideal read for those interested in health promotive situations of dwelling, ageing and caring.
