The Class-F3 RFPA is the one which has been designed and analyzed. It consists of an RF choke, blocking capacitor and a loading network. The loading network consists of a tank circuit resonating at fundamental operating frequency and also a parallel resonator circuit tuned to third harmonic. For a better understanding of the operation of Class-F3 amplifier, we go back to Class-C amplifier and discuss it briefly. Here the design remains same, operating at conduction angles less than 180°. The design equations were used to derive required circuit parameters on MATLAB. The designed circuit is implemented on SABER circuit simulator and resulting waveforms and frequency spectrums are also presented. The dependence of Class-F3 operation on gate-to-source voltage of a MOSFET is presented by varying it and showing the changes in the drain-to-source voltage and drain current. The frequency spectrum helps understand the harmonics in both signals. A design of the Class-F3 RFPA is presented with drain-source capacitance. A design for Class-F3 amplifier was produced where the MOSFET is forced to work in linear operating region and it is simulated in SABER. The plotted SABER simulation results are in agreement with the theoretically derived results. The simulated circuit efficiencies are a little less than what was calculated theoretically. The spectrums help clarify the results obtained.

Book excerpt: This dissertation describes a new radio-frequency power-amplifier circuit and mode of operation that exceeds the efficiency of the conventional class C amplifier in the low and medium h-f range. It will be found useful in applications where linearity between the input and output are not required, as in all applications where a conventional class C amplifier would be used, and where the highest efficiency with regard to r-f power output for a given d-c input power is desired. The reasons for this high efficiency are the transistor operates in a pure switching mode, and the voltage across the transistor and the current flowing through it can both be made exactly equal to zero during the interval of the switch-on transient. A complete design procedure is given along with tabulated design parameters to simplify the numerical calculations. To illustrate this, a O-watt transistor r-f power amplifier was designed, built and tested in the laboratory. This amplifier was found to be so efficient that an external heat radiator on the power transistor was unnecessary. The author suggests that such a design could be used to advantage in a transmitter for a remote radio-navigation beacon, as an emergency marine life-boat transmitter or in similar applications where input power is limited and expensive to provide.

Book excerpt: The modern wireless communication systems require modulated signals with wide modulation bandwidth. This, in turns, requires signals with very high dynamic range and peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR). This means that the amplifier in the base-station has to work at a power back-off as large as the dynamic range of the signal, so that the amplifier has a high linearity in this region. For the standard single-stage amplifiers, this large power back-off reduces the efficiency dramatically. In this work, a three-way Doherty power amplifier (DPA) aiming at high power efficiency within a dynamic range of 9.5 dB, is designed and fabricated using partitioning design approach. The partitioning design approach decomposes a complex design task into small-sized, well-controllable, and verifiable subcircuits. This advanced straight forward method has shown very promising results. Using this design approach, a three-way DPA has been designed to demonstrate the advantages of this reliable design technique as well. Based on the design of a single-stage power amplifier and proposing a novel output power combiner, a 6 W three-way DPA has been designed which allows the mandatory load modulation principle in three-way DPA structures to be realized with simpler elements, whereas the design of a standard Doherty combiner would have been very challenging and not practical due to the extremely small value of its characteristic line impedance. The proposed combiner is calculated for a three-way DPA with 2-mm AlGaN/GaN-HEMTs. The simulation result shows a very good load modulation for the amplifier, which confirms the theoretical expectation for a three-way DPA. The efficiency of the designed 6 W three-way DPA at large back-off shows very promising values compared to recently reported amplifiers. The measured IMD3 products confirm the good linearity of the amplifier as well. Accordingly, the proposed power combiner and the design strategy are recommended to be used as the preferred option for designing three-way DPA structures with very high output power.
