Download or read book Steel Highway Bridges With Reinforced Concrete Floors Classic Reprint written by Earl Zink Cornwell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-08 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Steel Highway Bridges With Reinforced Concrete Floors The dead load to be assumed for designing a bridge with wood floors is known very accurately; but it is not known for bridges with concrete floors, and consequently, the dead load assumed is frequently very much in error, often making a complete redesign of the bridge necessary. Book Concrete Bridges and Culverts for Both Railroads and Highways Classic Reprint

Download or read book Concrete Bridges and Culverts for Both Railroads and Highways Classic Reprint written by H. Grattan Tyrrell and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Concrete Bridges and Culverts, for Both Railroads and Highways Bridges of solid concrete are superior to those of any other material. They are as permanent as stone, and have a less cost. Masonry bridges and aqneducts built by the Romans are still standing, and some of them in use. A few old cast iron bridges remain, dating back a century or more, but a majority of the modern ones built of wrought iron and steel have a very limited existence. Forty years ago, steel bridges were believed to be permanent structures, but it is now well known that they do not generally last longer than from twenty to thirty years. Solid concrete bridges are superior to those in which reinforcing metal is required for resisting tensile stresses in the arch ring. Continuous water-soaking reduces the adhesion of concrete to steel by about 100 percent, and the effect of shocks and vibrations also tends to destroy the bond. It frequently occurs that cracks develop, sufficiently large to admit water, and when water and moisture reach the reinforcing metal, it is then only a few years before the metal is destroyed by rust. An old wire suspension bridge that recently failed, was examined and reported on by the writer, and it was found that failure occurred because of the rusting and breaking of the wire cables embedded in the anchorage. Book The Design of Simple Steel Bridges Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Design of Simple Steel Bridges Classic Reprint written by Philip Osborne Gordon Usborne and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-22 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Design of Simple Steel Bridges IN writing this book my idea has been to revise and rearrange my former book, entitled Manual of Bridge Design, which has been used for some considerable time as a text-book on this subject by the Royal Engineers at the School of Military Engineering, Chatham. I have endeavoured to depart from the generality of text books, and to keep ever before the student the practical aim or object for which he is striving. I have also tried always to illustrate theoretical deductions and conclusions with examples from actual practice. The book is full of practical examples and illustrations, and contains many details of all sorts connected with bridge work. I have confined this work to simple bridges. On all hands text-books by celebrated men abound which investigate most thoroughly every conceivable kind of structure or girder, books which go into deep mathematics, and which at their conclusion do not venture to advise any particular course of action under any set circumstances, but leave the engineer to decide for himself. In this book I have therefore avoided any deep mathematics; a graphic solution of every problem is given where such a solution is useful, and I. Have in simple language endeavoured to advise or lay down a course of action in almost every case. And although the course of action recommended may sometimes be open to question as to whether it is the best, yet I think it is always good. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Comparative Design for a Highway Bridge: Thesis The site is along Spring Creek about one and one - half miles outside of the city limits of Springfield, Illinois. This water way is a shallow stream, carrying a comparatively large quantity of water during the spring season only. The concrete structure in place is of the girder type. The material is a gravel concrete of the following proportions, 1 part I cement, 2 parts sand, and 4 parts gravel. The substructure i and floor were placed in the late fall of 1910; but as cold weather! Overtook the work, it was suspended for the winter and the girders added in the following spring.
