Download or read book The Design and Construction of a Towed Multi port Water Sampling Probe for 100 Meter Depths written by Clifford L. Winget and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 1338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The experimental towed multi-port water sampler was designed to provide a shipboard science party with the capability of obtaining continuous water samples from the surface to a 100 meter depth. The device will simultaneously provide six samples spaced one meter apart in a vertical plane, while being towed by a surface support vessel at a forward speed of between two to three knots. The device consists of a bottom fish containing six electric motors, each driving an individual pump. The six water samples are pumped to the surface using separate runs of TFE Teflon tubing. The tube is mounted in a pliant fairing that also houses the lifting cable, power leads, and instrumentation bundle. A drum winch is used to store a total of 150 meters of faired cable, and is capable of raising or lowering the fish while under way. The sampler will provide a discharge flow rate of 5.6 liters per minute from each sample tube, while pumping through 150 meters of 12.7 rnrn bore tubing, against a 4.5 meter head. A depth sensor transducer within the fish provides a top-side readout of the actual operating depth of the fish, while a remote reading temperature sensor provides a continuous display of the water temperature.

Download or read book Structure and Dynamics of the Benthic Boundary Layer Above the Hatteras Abyssal Plain written by Eric Arthur D'Asaro and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 1160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The structure of the near-bottom velocity and density fields was observed for 3 months with a fixed velocity/temperature measuring array on the Hatteras Abyssal Plain. The velocity signal was examined for structure coherent with the observed mixed layers. Velocity fluctuations above 1 cph increase in energy near the bottom, especially within bottom mixed layers. The frequency and energy of these fluctuations is consistent with the expected properties of boundary layer turbulence. The turbulence as measured by these velocity fluctuations, is modulated on tidal and inertial time scales and extends intermittently throughout the bottom mixed layer. The clockwise near inertial velocity fluctuations, presumably due to internal waves, also show structure coherent with the observed mixed layers. Their energy decreases near the top of the mixed layer with little phase change. Within the mixed layer the phase begins to lead, with the phase increasing downward. The near inertial anticlockwise velocity fluctuations show far less coherence with the mixed layer structure; higher frequency internal wave band velocity fluctuations show very little coherence with the mixed layer structure. The characteristic boundary layer velocity signal in both the high frequency and near inertial bands commonly extends throughout the mixed layer, often significantly above the estimated turbulent Ekman layer height. These observations are inconsistent with a steady turbulent Ekman layer model of the boundary layer. (Author).

Download or read book Instrumentation and Metrology in Oceanography written by Marc Le Menn and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-12-13 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through research, physical oceanography aims to solve the numerous problems stated by thermal, optical and dynamical properties of the oceans. Instrumentation and Metrology in Physical Oceanography describes the means used in oceanography to determine physical properties of the oceans by medium of in situ measurements. This book explores the theoretical functioning of sensors and instruments, as well as different practical aspects of using these tools. The content of this book appeals directly to technicians or engineers wishing to enhance their knowledge of instrumentation and application to environment surveillance. Instrumentation and Metrology in Physical Oceanography details the functioning of sensors and instruments used to assess the following parameters in oceanography: temperature, conductivity, pressure, sound velocity, current in magnitude and direction, time and position with GPS, height of water and tide, waves, optical and chemical properties (turbidity), dissolved gas (O2, CO2), pH, nutrients and other dissolved elements. Furthermore, this book also elaborates on the different means used to obtain measurements at sea (boats, drifting floats, moorings, undersea platforms, gliders...) and techniques currently being developed.

Book excerpt: This manual provides guidance on evaluating the condition of the concrete in a structure, relating the condition of the concrete to the underlying cause or causes of that condition, selecting an appropriate repair material and method for any deficiency found, and using the selected materials and methods to repair or rehabilitate the structure. Guidance is also included on maintenance of concrete and on preparation of concrete investigation reports for repair and rehabilitation projects. Considerations for certain specialized types of rehabilitation projects are also given.
Download or read book Handbook of Geotechnical Investigation and Design Tables written by Burt G. Look and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2007-04-26 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This practical handbook of properties for soils and rock contains, in a concise tabular format, the key issues relevant to geotechnical investigations, assessments and designs in common practice. In addition, there are brief notes on the application of the tables. These data tables are compiled for experienced geotechnical professionals who require a reference document to access key information. There is an extensive database of correlations for different applications. The book should provide a useful bridge between soil and rock mechanics theory and its application to practical engineering solutions. The initial chapters deal with the planning of the geotechnical investigation, the classification of the soil and rock properties and some of the more used testing is then covered. Later chapters show the reliability and correlations that are used to convert that data in the interpretative and assessment phase of the project. The final chapters apply some of these concepts to geotechnical design. This book is intended primarily for practicing geotechnical engineers working in investigation, assessment and design, but should provide a useful supplement for postgraduate courses.
