Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Desert Corn Flea-Beetle In destroying its food plant, this beetle works from both ends, as it were, the adults attacking the plant above the ground and the larvae below the ground. The adults eat out the chlorophyll of the leaves, and when sufficiently numerous they cause the leaves to wilt. If feeding is long continued, new growing plants will be killed. AS the eggs are deposited below the surface of the ground, the larvae immediately begin feeding. Upon the roots, and soon the plant has quite a shallow root system that will not support it in a thrifty manner. The roots, after having been injured by the larvae, attempt to overcome this injury by sending out new laterals, as illustrated in figure 6, page 11, and then sometimes Slight windstorms will cause plants to blow over and lodge badly, thus further reducing the yield. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Western Cabbage Flea-Beetle The habitual appearance of this species In great abundance on young plants is a factor which prohibits the use of anything except immediate application of poisonous substances like the arsenicals or repellents, but there Is little doubt that in the course of time this pest will lessen in numbers, provided concerted action Is taken to control it. Ameng the best remedies to be employed IS the establish ment of clean culture throughout the year from early spring until the crop is off and even thereafter. To accomplish this all cru'ciferous and related weeds on which the insects normally feed and-breed Should be kept down. It is desirable, therefore that the grower become familiar with all of these plants, or else it will be necessary to destroy all weeds and keep the fields free from them at all times. This maybe accomplished by the ordinary process of weeding and bybui'ning over after the crop is off and again before the crop is planted. Plow ing over may be sufficient at either time. Book Edible Insects

Download or read book Edible Insects written by Arnold van Huis and published by Bright Sparks. This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edible insects have always been a part of human diets, but in some societies there remains a degree of disdain and disgust for their consumption. Although the majority of consumed insects are gathered in forest habitats, mass-rearing systems are being developed in many countries. Insects offer a significant opportunity to merge traditional knowledge and modern science to improve human food security worldwide. This publication describes the contribution of insects to food security and examines future prospects for raising insects at a commercial scale to improve food and feed production, diversify diets, and support livelihoods in both developing and developed countries. It shows the many traditional and potential new uses of insects for direct human consumption and the opportunities for and constraints to farming them for food and feed. It examines the body of research on issues such as insect nutrition and food safety, the use of insects as animal feed, and the processing and preservation of insects and their products. It highlights the need to develop a regulatory framework to govern the use of insects for food security. And it presents case studies and examples from around the world. Edible insects are a promising alternative to the conventional production of meat, either for direct human consumption or for indirect use as feedstock. To fully realise this potential, much work needs to be done by a wide range of stakeholders. This publication will boost awareness of the many valuable roles that insects play in sustaining nature and human life, and it will stimulate debate on the expansion of the use of insects as food and feed.
