Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dental Times, Vol. 7: A Quarterly Journal of Dental Science; July, 1869 It is very often the case that the patient will not return to have the permanent gold filling put in for three or four months, but in such cases I generally find the temporary filling in good condition and preserving the tooth; in fact, I think I would always prefer leaving the temporary filling in at least three months if I were sure it would preserve the tooth in all cases. My experience with this mode of treating exposed nerves, now for over two years, has been more successful than I imagined at first it could be, and I have no hesitancy in stating that, out of every ten healthy teeth filled in this manner, for comparatively healthy persons, nine of them have proved successful, and the Operation attended with but little or no pain, or at least no more than would follow an application to destroy the nerve. My faith has become so strong that I now cap in this way in almost every instance, rarely ever making use of nerve paste. I have several patients in the village whom I have treated teeth for in this manner, and have an opportunity to see them Often, therefore I know some Of my operations have been successful. I might mention, too, that I consider os artificial one of the best remedies for sensitive dentine. I saturate cotton in a thin mixture of it, and place it in the tooth, and let it remain two or three days; the cotton becomes hard, and serves as a temporary filling. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dental News Letter, 1853, Vol. 7: A Quarterly Publication, Devoted to the Interests of the Dental Profession The points to be remarked here, for our purpose, are, that the laws of the United States do not protect a discoverer or inventor in the exclusive right to his discovery or invention beyond the period of four teen years, except in the case where he may be able to satisfy the Secrerary of State and Commissioner of Patents that, without any default of his own, he has failed to obtain by the sale thereof, a rea sonable remuneration for his time, ingenuity, and expense bestowed upon the same, and the introduction thereof into use, (bouvier, 2d vol., and in that case only according to the 18th section of the Act of Congress of the year 1836, the patent may be extended for the term of seven years longer, making twenty-one years, the utmost limit of the privilege in any case. And I learn also, from competent authority, that no decision has ever yet been made in the United States by which the right to a dis covery or invention has been protected by damages against infringe ment by any other form of legal remedy than that provided by the patent laws, which, as appears, extends such protection in no case whatever, beyond the period of twenty-one years. Here, then, there is no legal recognition of any such absolute pro perty in any invention, as will debar the public from borrowing or adopting it, or will prohibit any subsequent discoverer of the same prin ciple, agent or method of Operating, from freely using it after the period covered by the patent shall have expired.
