Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dental Review, Vol. 1: November, 1886 October, 1887 Each field in histology seems to be worked over and pondered over anew, as new pathological factors have fastened the atten tion of specialist or general practitioner. This is the case whether the new factor be based upon some new fact discovered, or theory propounded; for each thought that gives promise of developing truth must be tried and tallied with the form elements with which it is associated. More than 1,680 multiple-choice questions provide comprehensive practice spanning the entire NBDHE, with 1,250+ items relating to Component A — more than six times the number of questions on the actual exam! — and 420 case-based questions related to Component B. Rationales accompany each question, fully explaining why each answer choice is either correct or incorrect and thus serving as secondary content review. Distribution of questions matches each category on the NBDHE test specifications, ensuring that you have adequate practice for each content area. An Evolve companion website includes all 1,250+ questions from the book plus additional case studies with color images and accompanying questions, available either in practice mode with instant feedback or in exam-simulation format with results and feedback provided at the end of the exam. A test creator and timer on Evolve generates NBDHE-style tests that mimic the number and distribution of questions on the NBDHE and also provides realistic practice with time management during the exam. 16 detailed case studies on Evolve, each of which includes a patient medical/dental history, completed periodontal chart, oral radiographs, clinical photographs, and 20-35 multiple-choice questions for patients in the five main categories covered on the NBDHE (adult periodontitis, pediatric, geriatric, special needs, and medically compromised). Book The Tales Teeth Tell

Download or read book The Tales Teeth Tell written by Tanya M. Smith and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2018-10-23 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What teeth can tell us about human evolution, development, and behavior. Our teeth have intriguing stories to tell. These sophisticated time machines record growth, diet, and evolutionary history as clearly as tree rings map a redwood's lifespan. Each day of childhood is etched into tooth crowns and roots—capturing birth, nursing history, environmental clues, and illnesses. The study of ancient, fossilized teeth sheds light on how our ancestors grew up, how we evolved, and how prehistoric cultural transitions continue to affect humans today. In The Tales Teeth Tell, biological anthropologist Tanya Smith offers an engaging and surprising look at what teeth tell us about the evolution of primates—including our own uniqueness. Humans' impressive set of varied teeth provides a multipurpose toolkit honed by the diet choices of our mammalian ancestors. Fossil teeth, highly resilient because of their substantial mineral content, are all that is left of some long-extinct species. Smith explains how researchers employ painstaking techniques to coax microscopic secrets from these enigmatic remains. Counting tiny daily lines provides a way to estimate age that is more powerful than any other forensic technique. Dental plaque—so carefully removed by dental hygienists today—records our ancestors' behavior and health in the form of fossilized food particles and bacteria, including their DNA. Smith also traces the grisly origins of dentistry, reveals that the urge to pick one's teeth is not unique to humans, and illuminates the age-old pursuit of “dental art.” The book is generously illustrated with original photographs, many in color.

A purse of $400 has been forwarded to the English committee of the Waite testimonial fund, which would have been largely increased had it been known that Americans might assist in this undertaking. All dentists on this side of the Atlantic sincerely sympathize with Dr. Waite in the misfortune which has befallen him, (the loss of eyesight). None other could be more distressing to a dentist whose sole capital in practice he is suddenly deprived of. " TE'raNINE,"--Nicolaier, astudent in Fliljges laboratory, claims to have discovered the special bacillus or micro-organism causing lockjaw, and Bruger puts forth claims that the disease is also due to the ptomaine " tetanine " produced in certain stages of putrefaction. This is a definite chemical compound which can be isolated by appropriate chemical processes. When injected beneath the skin it will produce a disease developing all the phenomena of lockjaw. ' It will be of great benefit to most operators to ligate loose teeth, with gold wire, previous to making the attempt to remove deposits from the roots, or injecting medicines into pockets or between the roots and gums. Twelve, fourteen or six teen carat gold wire may be drawn down to the size of ordinary binding wire, and after annealing, it will hold teeth in position by weaving it into figure of 8 shape, around the requisite number. The ends may be twisted and bent towards the gum but not touching it. The wire need not be doubled as it...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dental Review, 1916, Vol. 30: Devoted to the Advancement of Dental Science The first point I wish to emphasize by way of discussion is the opening into the root canal. I think most of us probably fail there. It is the most important step because it is the first step. We must give Sufficient room for direct access into each canal. That would apply to the molar teeth more particularly. I think the frequent use of alcohol around and in the field of operation is also indicated, not only because it is a splendid cleansing agent, but for its dehydrating properties. I think, also, that the technic of the broaches ln the canal should be further emphasized, as long as we are emphasizing the chemical cleansing. The use of sulphuric acid and sodium bicarbonate is certainly indicated in the difficult canals more particularly. Personally, I have been using potassium hydroxid in place of the sodium bicarbonate. It has been a rare treat to have heard Dr. Buckley and Dr. 'e-isen discuss this paper. There is hardly anything further that I would care to say other than what has already been said. I thank you.
