Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dental Cosmos, 1869, Vol. 11: A Monthly Record of Dental Science Having thus carefully selected our wood, it should be sawed into blocks three or four inches long. It will be noted that between each concentric circle, which indicates a year's growth of the tree, is an interstitial space of a more porous structure. In Splitting these blocks into sticks for pivots, we must Split through these porous Spaces. This will enable us to file or scrape away all the soft porous wood, leaving only the densest portion of which to form pivots. These sticks are to be made round with the knife or file, and then condensed by being drawn. Through a wire-plate. Such pivots as these, used straight, as they always should be, I venture to assert are stronger and more durable than any mongrel kind of wood and gold. The commercial pivot wood sold. At our dental depots is not always quite what it should be, and any dentist who means to use the best may prepare it himself. All this is preliminary to our object - the insertion of the tooth. Select one of the right size, form, and color. This is very easily written, like the direction in the cook-book, how to cook a rabbit. First, catch the rabbit. But like that, it is sometimes very difficult to do, and the patience is often exhausted before the taste is satisfied. Those dentists who manufacture the teeth they use are no worse off than ever. But those of us who buy them, find on sale an Old stock, consisting chiefly of venerable relics that have been in the market and familiar to our eyes for a generation. Few new teeth of this class are manufactured, and no improvement is made. This is not solely the fault of the manufacturer. If the profession demanded anything better it would come. But the sale is so small, that it does not pay to keep a large stock on hand. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dental Record, Vol. 2 Of the four typical modes of attachment of teeth, the method of insertion in sockets, or gomphosis, attains in all extant orders of Mammalia possessing true teeth, except in some Cetaceans. This form of attachment also exists in Crocodilia, and with the rostral teeth of Pristis. On this occasion the consideration of the general subject of the attachment of teeth is confined to the limited zoological area of man, an aspect of the question which immediately concerns the dentist, and the correspondent, "Student." Though in this article there may not be stated anything that is not already known, yet, if it amount to only a reiteration of structural and physiological facts, with their bearing on certain of the more common pathological conditions, some useful purpose may be served. The Alveolar-Dental Membrane, or Dental Periosteum, is the membrane which fixes the tooth to the walls of the socket. In structure it consists of four elements - fibrous tissues, cells, blood vessels, and nerves. The Fibrous tissue is more or less dense, tough, and of the white fibrous (connective tissue) variety. Very little yellow elastic tissue is to be found, and, those modified connective elements, fat cells, are not regarded as entering into its structure. The fibrous tissue is thicker at the neck of a tooth than it is at the deeper parts of the socket. It runs obliquely from the bone of the alveolus to the cementum of the tooth; and, in all the longitudinal sections that I have examined, this obliquity is more pronounced in a direction from the bone towards the apex of the root. Therefore, the teeth of the lower jaw may be said to hang in their sockets, but with regard to those of the upper jaw, though the fibres pursue a similar course, the principles of gravitation preclude the use of the same simile. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dental Review, 1897, Vol. 11: Devoted to the Advancement of Dental Science I will call your attention to the study of the anatomical rela tions of the teeth to each other and to the immediate surrounding soft parts. To the physical characters of the teeth themselves and their ability to withstand stress. To the nature of caries and to its causation, a subject upon which demonstrated knowledge has very recently been gained, and try to point out the relation of these to everyday procedures in filling teeth. I have not the intention of discussing these matters in detail, but wish to call your attention strongly to certain points which bear an intimate relation to the improvement of filling Operations. Book The Dental Record Vol 4 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Dental Record Vol 4 Classic Reprint written by European Orthodontic Society and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-22 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explore European dentistry with Volume 4 of The Dental Record, which summarizes the work of dentists in Europe throughout the year. The book includes scientific research, reports from dental associations, coursework from dental school, veterinary reports and information about laws and regulations. There are several sections which are primarily concerned with dental students. There are articles on how to comport oneself as a dentist, as well as how to diagnose and treat patients. Many European medical schools submitted extensive materials for The Dental Record, the entire course of study for these schools is summarized, including academic requisites, fees, syllabi, coursework and examinations. There are a plethora of lengthy articles discussing dental equipment of the time; one such article analyses the use of electricity in dentistry and surgery, including a detailed description of batteries and electric lights, followed by a discussion of how the equipment is applied to dentistry. Similarly technical articles appear throughout the journal, each with corresponding sketches and diagrams. State regulation of dentistry was more advanced in Europe than in America, and this book discusses the various laws and regulations on the practice of dentistry. Court cases are reported upon for the information of dentists practising in the corresponding jurisdictions. The Dental Record is not limited to human dentistry, with papers from veterinarians regarding animal dentistry also included in the book. The Dental Record is more science and research oriented than its American cousin, The Archives of Dentistry, the latter of which is more like an almanac than scholarly journal. Still, readers of The Dental Record can expect to gain a thorough understanding of the science underlying the practice of dentistry in Europe in the late 19th Century. Researchers in law, science and dentistry will enjoy this volume. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dental Record, 1893, Vol. 13: A Monthly Journal of Dental Science, Art, and Literature, Devoted to the Interest of the Profession The first real step in the use of electricity is dentistry, with the exception of some plating and dipping processes in the workroom, was the invention, in 187 5, of the electric mallet, since brought to such high perfection by Dr. Bonwill, an American practitioner, who has shown himself to be possessed of very high mechanical ability. The action of this instrument is very simple. An electro magnet is placed in such a position as to act on a mallet of iron, which is kept apart from the coils by a small spiral Spring. When this mallet is acted upon by the passage of the electric current through the helix of the electro-magnet it taps the end Of the plugger, and at the same time breaking the contact of the circuit, it falls back released; and the blow is again repeated in a similar manner. The mallet is controlled by a small plate on the right side of the instrument, which, when pressed forward by the first finger of the Operator, completes the circuit, and thus causes the malleting to commence. A slot on the Opposite side of the vulcanite hand piece enables the manipulator to turn the plugger in any desired direction with the thumb. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dominion Dental Journal, 1899, Vol. 11 We are very glad to be able to give our readers the portrait Of Dr. G. Lenox Curtis, who has made a reputation for himself as an operator in the special lines Of oral and facial surgery, which enabled him some years ago to abandon the practice Of dentistry, to devote himself exclusively to these branches. Canadian dentists who are in the habit of attending our various conventions, and who have witnessed some Of the brilliant Operations in oral, facial and nasal surge'ry by the doctor, will remember his skill in working almost exclusively through the mouth, and without opening or scarring the face. The success Of several Of these cases was clearly due to the special skill and experience the doctor enjoyed for many years as a practical dentist. The training in the every-day use Of the dental engine. And various mechanical devices, led him naturally to resort to their assistance more than the ordinarily trained surgeon would be apt to adopt. Many Of the methods and mechanical devices which we have seen the doctor use, were the outgrowth Of practical experience as a dentist, and several Of the best are his own invention. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dental Record, 1898, Vol. 18: Monthly Journal of Dental Science, Art, and Literature Gentlemen, - I thank you for the honour you have conferred upon me in electing me your President, and trust that you will have no occasion to regret. Your choice. I hope the session we have entered upon may be no less useful and interesting than many of the former ones have been. In order that this may be so, I rely upon you to give me the help which, like that of previous times, has done so much to raise the Manchester Odontological Society to the position it now holds. My earnest wish is that the future members may emulate the past, and still strive after better things, and go on increasing in number and unity that isolation in the profession may become a shadow of bygone days, and that our work shall unquestionably prove that Unity is strength, to the advantage of the dentist individually, and the amelioration of human suffering. In accordance with custom you are looking forward to an inaugural address on some subject of interest to the Society. As some of you are aware, it is no easy matter to decide upon a topic suitable for an occasion like this. There have been so many interesting and varied papers read before you that it is with trepidation I attempt to read anything likely to be acceptable and profitable to you. Taking into consideration, however, that we are to-night to have an exhibition of tools, appliances, and methods which have been designed or adapted by members for use in the laboratory, I have thought it advisable to confine myself to that part of our profession, and considered it would not be uninteresting if I were to introduce an important branch of our mechanical department, and venture a few remarks on Vulcanite and Vulcanizing.
