Book excerpt: Demographic data from the 2010 U.S. Census indicate a sea change in the demographics of the United States and, specifically, of California. The growth of the Latino population has risen dramatically from 9.1 million in 1970 to 50.5 million in 2010, and is projected to be 132.8 million by 2050. I examine whether the growth in numbers is leading to a change in power for Latinos in California. Concluding that it is, I then look at power through narrative. Power shapes who we are, and the ability to define oneself, that is, tell one's own story, is an indicator of power. In the past, the narratives of people of color have been marginalized as demonstrated through their literary histories; they have not been part of America's largely Eurocentric master narrative. With the transformation of society evidenced by the demographics, I argue that the master narrative is evolving by including and incorporating the perspectives of the narratives of people of color, which is power. This is different from the counter narrative, which is in opposition to the master narrative, not part of it. I examine this evolution through a microcosm of a select cross-section of successful Mexican Americans in the Central Valley whose stories illustrate patterns of family, values, and cultural heritage. My sample is of trailing indicators that may predict a trajectory of leading indicators, i.e., the next and subsequent generations of Latinos. Demographic data are laid over how the sample subjects perceive important themes. This study is interdisciplinary. It combines perspectives from many disciplines, including literature, sociology, anthropology, history, ethnography, migration studies, ethnic studies, gender studies, economics, psychology, geography, and technology. It is on the cusp of new research, drawing together strands from many areas and examining them through a broader and more inclusive lens, and thus contributes to the body of existing scholarship.

Book A Portrait of Race and Ethnicity in California

Download or read book A Portrait of Race and Ethnicity in California written by Public Policy Institute of California and published by Public Policy Instit. of CA. This book was released on 2001 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document examines differences in socioeconomic status by racial and ethnic groups in California, exploring changing patterns over time. It analyzes trends and outcomes in demography, geographic distribution, health, education, crime, labor markets, economic status, and political participation. Data on educational outcomes include: education of mothers; English language ability; preschool activities of children ages 3 and 4; reading and math proficiency for grade 4 and 8 public school students; high school completion rates; college completion rates; and measures of basic skills in the adult population. The educational outcomes of Hispanics and African Americans are the lowest among all racial and ethnic groups. Most recent population growth has occurred among Hispanics and Asians. Most counties were predominantly White in 1970, but between 1970-98, the share of Whites declined in all but one county. African Americans have the worst health status of any group. Hispanics often have less access to health care and lower health status than Whites. Health indicators for Asians are similar to those for Whites. Nonwhites generally have lower earnings than whites. Hispanics and African Americans have particularly high unemployment rates. Asian and White family incomes are substantially higher than those for African Americans and Hispanics. The ethnic distribution of those arrested and incarcerated has shifted dramatically. The proportion of Hispanics incarcerated has risen at a faster rate than has the Hispanic proportion of the general population. African Americans experience the highest risk of arrest and incarceration and are most likely to experience violence. Whites are over-represented in the voting population. Asians and Hispanics have the lowest participation rates. An appendix presents additional sources of information. (Contains 103 bibliographic references.) (SM)

When these babies reach adulthood, they will, by sheer force of numbers, influence the course of the Golden State. This essential study, based on decades of data, paints a vivid and energetic portrait of Latino society in California by providing a wealth of details about work ethic, family strengths, business establishments, and the surprisingly robust health profile that yields an average life expectancy for Latinos five years longer than that of the general population. Spanning one hundred years, this complex, fascinating analysis suggests that the future of Latinos in California will be neither complete assimilation nor unyielding separatism. Instead, the development of a distinctive regional identity will be based on Latino definitions of what it means to be American.

This updated edition now provides trend lines through the 2010 Census as well as information on the 1849 California Constitutional Convention and the ethnogenesis of how Latinos created the society of "Latinos de Estados Unidos" (Latinos in the US). In addition, two new chapters focus on Latino Post-Millennials—the first focusing on what it’s like to grow up in a digital world; and the second describing the contestation of Latinos at a national level and the dynamics that transnational relationships have on Latino Post-Millennials in Mexico and Central America.

Book excerpt: Addresses the problem that in CA, Latinos currently have the lowest wages of any ethnic group, principally because of their lower levels of educational attainment. This problem must be addressed because 50-60% of the population growth in California is attributable to Latinos, and by 2025, Latinos will comprise over 40% of the pop'n. and will be the largest ethnic group in the State. The economic benefits for the State are estimated at $28 bil. in the form of increased wages circulating in the economy, meaning $1.7 bil. more in State income tax rev. Many of the issues raised in this report are not specific to Latinos, but can be applied to people from diverse backgrounds.

Book excerpt: Named one of the Best Books of the Year by NPR An NPR Best Book of the Year, exploring the impact of Latinos’ new collective racial identity on the way Americans understand race, with a new afterword by the author Who are Latinos and where do they fit in America’s racial order? In this “timely and important examination of Latinx identity” (Ms.), Laura E. Gómez, a leading critical race scholar, argues that it is only recently that Mexican Americans, Puerto Ricans, Cubans, Dominicans, Central Americans, and others are seeing themselves (and being seen by others) under the banner of a cohesive racial identity. And the catalyst for this emergent identity, she argues, has been the ferocity of anti-Latino racism. In what Booklist calls “an incisive study of history, complex interrogation of racial construction, and sophisticated legal argument,” Gómez “packs a knockout punch” (Publishers Weekly), illuminating for readers the fascinating race-making, unmaking, and re-making processes that Latinos have undergone over time, indelibly changing the way race functions in this country. Building on the “insightful and well-researched” (Kirkus Reviews) material of the original, the paperback features a new afterword in which the author analyzes results of the 2020 Census, providing brilliant, timely insight about how Latinos have come to self-identify.
