Book The Democratic Republic of the Congo Analysis Initiatives and Recommendations to a Major Conflict in the Heart of Africa

Download or read book The Democratic Republic of the Congo Analysis Initiatives and Recommendations to a Major Conflict in the Heart of Africa written by Enno Dreier and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2004-02-04 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2003 in the subject Politics - Region: Africa, grade: 1,3 (A), Stellenbosch Universitiy (Department of Political Science), course: Peace and Conflict Studies, language: English, abstract: To call the conflict in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) one of the most complex ones in history is no hyperbole. The involvement of up to 20 different parties and the various interests that occur might else be found only in the complexity of the 30 Years’ War of 17 th century Europe. Indeed many parallels exist between these two wars except maybe the fact that the former one can be regarded as war of state-building while the war in the DRC can be regarded as a state-collapsing war (van Crefeld 1999: 223-251). Due to the number of African countries involved, the estimated loss of 2,000,000 lives (Tshiyembé 2003), the complex role of economy, and the mere size of the country, it seems sad but true that ‘peace on the African continent cannot become a reality until there is peace in the DRC’ (Guéhenno 2002: 78). When considering such a conflict it is crucial to analyze the root causes of the conflict, even if they lie in the past, because these are necessary for understanding and addressing the conflict. Therefore a large part of this report will deal with historic, economic and systemic analysis.

Book The Democratic Republic of Congo

Download or read book The Democratic Republic of Congo written by Michael Deibert and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2013-09-12 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past two decades, the Democratic Republic of Congo has been at the centre of the deadliest series of conflicts since the Second World War, and now hosts the largest United Nations peacekeeping mission in the world. In this compelling book, acclaimed journalist Michael Deibert paints a picture of a nation in flux, inching towards peace but at the same time solidifying into another era of authoritarian rule under its enigmatic president, Joseph Kabila. Featuring a wealth of first-hand interviews and secondary sources, the narrative travels from war-torn villages in the country's east to the chaotic, pulsing capital of Kinshasa in order to bring us the voices of the Congolese - from impoverished gold prospectors and market women to government officials - as it explores the complicated political, ethnic and economic geography of this tattered land. A must-read for anyone interested in contemporary Africa, The Democratic Republic of Congo: Between, Hope and Despair sheds new light on this sprawling and often misunderstood country that has become iconic both for its great potential and dashed hopes.

Book An Analysis of the Economic Dimension of the Conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo with Recommendations for Track One Diplomacy

Download or read book An Analysis of the Economic Dimension of the Conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo with Recommendations for Track One Diplomacy written by Cornelia Cone and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The economic dimension of conflicts has enjoyed increasing attention in research dealing with the dynamics of contemporary conflict. The nexus between natural resources, economics and conflict has played a defining role in a number of Africa's most intractable conflicts during the 1990s and early 2000s. The underlying assumption of this study is that the economic dimension of conflict can be hugely informative in terms of an understanding as to why peace agreements fail and in that sense can contribute to the resolution of conflicts if taken into account during the formulation of peace agreements. This study explores the ways in which conflict theory has dealt with the conflict-economics nexus, analyzing the extent to which theory illuminates the conflict reality in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) during the period August 1998 to August 2004. It determines to what degree peace agreements in the DRC have taken the economic dimension and insights gained from the academic exploration of this topic into account during the negotiation and formulation of these agreements. In conclusion the study proposes a number of recommendations in terms of the peace process in the DRC with possible wider application for other peace agreements.

Book The Trouble with the Congo

Download or read book The Trouble with the Congo written by Séverine Autesserre and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-06-14 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Trouble with the Congo suggests a new explanation for international peacebuilding failures in civil wars. Drawing from more than 330 interviews and a year and a half of field research, it develops a case study of the international intervention during the Democratic Republic of the Congo's unsuccessful transition from war to peace and democracy (2003-2006). Grassroots rivalries over land, resources, and political power motivated widespread violence. However, a dominant peacebuilding culture shaped the intervention strategy in a way that precluded action on local conflicts, ultimately dooming the international efforts to end the deadliest conflict since World War II. Most international actors interpreted continued fighting as the consequence of national and regional tensions alone. UN staff and diplomats viewed intervention at the macro levels as their only legitimate responsibility. The dominant culture constructed local peacebuilding as such an unimportant, unfamiliar, and unmanageable task that neither shocking events nor resistance from select individuals could convince international actors to reevaluate their understanding of violence and intervention.

Book Conflict business Dynamics in the Democratic Republic of Congo

Download or read book Conflict business Dynamics in the Democratic Republic of Congo written by Raymond Gilpin and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has enormous economic potential thanks to its rich mineral deposits and vast tracts of arable land. Historically, these resources have been exploited by predatory leaders and a host of subregional actors. The time is now ripe for DRC to put years of war and economic underdevelopment behind it. The business community has an important part to play in promoting sustainable peace in the DRC. Business communities in Bukavu and Lubumbashi have managed to remain profitable in very trying years following the signing of the 1999 Lusaka peace accord by showing great resilience and versatility, primarily outside formal channels. Congolese businesses face serious obstacles, including poor infrastructure, high taxes, extortion, and market distortions. However, respondents expressed relatively little concern about insecurity and violence, suggesting that these costs have been internalized or that other obstacles impose much greater costs. DRC businesses neither want nor expect handouts. Respondents would prefer assistance in removing barriers to trade, improving infrastructure, and reducing corruption. Respondents are broadly optimistic about the future and their economic prospects, and have a strong sense of being stakeholders in shaping society. This bodes well for the future of the DRC, provided public policy can harness this energy and not impede it.

Download or read book Congo written by Thomas Turner and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-04-18 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Democratic Republic of Congo has become one of the world's bloodiest hot spots. 2003 saw the end of a five-year war in which millions lost their lives - one of the deadliest conflicts since World War II. Despite recent peace agreements and democratic elections, the country is still plagued by army and militia violence. Congo remains deeply troubled, since the deep-rooted causes of conflict have not been adequately addressed. The conflict in the DRC has divided opinion; some call it a civil war, or a war of aggression by the country's neighbours; others a continuation of Rwanda's Hutu-Tutsi conflict on Congolose soil, and a war of partition and pillage. The prevalence of rape and sexual violence has led some analysts to mark it out as a hidden ‘war against women'. Tom Turner's insightful book reveals how each of these descriptions accurately captures the separate elements of this complex and multidimensional political conflict. In exploring each of these contributory factors, he shows how current attempts to rebuild the shattered state and society of DRC are doomed to fail. So long as the full complexity of the Congo crisis is not taken into account and a clear consensus as to its precise dimensions reached, the future looks bleak. The DRC, he argues, will likely remain a global hot spot for some time to come.

Book Gender Violence and Politics in the Democratic Republic of Congo

Download or read book Gender Violence and Politics in the Democratic Republic of Congo written by Jane Freedman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-09 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has been called the ’worst place in the world’ for women, with reports of widespread and horrific incidents of rape and sexual violence and almost complete impunity for the perpetrators of such violence. However, despite the high profile media reporting on sexual violence in the DRC, and the widely publicized responses of the international community, there is still very little real analysis of the real situation of women in the country. This book provides such detailed analysis of gender relations in the DRC, and goes beyond the usual explanations of sexual violence as a product of conflict, to examine the complex and socially constructed gender norms and roles which underlie incidences of violence. The book benefits from a comprehensive account of men’s and women’s roles in conflict, violence, peace building and reconstruction, and evaluates the impacts of national and international political responses. In doing so, this book provides valuable new evidence and analysis of the complex and multilayered conflicts in the DRC.

Book Re evaluating Peacebuilding in the Democratic Republic of Congo A Case Study in Dongo

Download or read book Re evaluating Peacebuilding in the Democratic Republic of Congo A Case Study in Dongo written by Wilita Sanguma and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Democratic Republic of Congo (Congo) is a country rich with natural resources centered in the heart of Africa. Since the colonial era, the country has seen more bloodshed than peace and development. From 1996 to 2003, Congo experienced the worst conflict since World War II, with over six million people dead. Despite having the largest United Nations peacekeeping troops present; Congo continues to be plagued by violence. This research thesis argues that the international community failed to promote a lasting peace in Congo because the international community0́9s peacebuilding method ignored local struggles. Local struggles have been one of the main factors perpetuating violence and instability within Congo. In 2009, a local dispute over land escalated in Dongo, a small city in the Equateur province of Congo. Starting as a small scale conflict, the local dispute erupted into a large scale conflict, threatening national security. The conflict resulted in over 2,000 civilian deaths and over 150,000 displaced persons. Using Dongo as a case study, the research thesis illustrates the importance of local struggles and how small scale conflicts can evolve to a large scale conflict. This research aims to expand the understanding of local struggles and their negative impacts on peace in Congo.

Book CONDUCTING BASELINE STUDIES IN POST CONFLICT SETTINGS

Download or read book CONDUCTING BASELINE STUDIES IN POST CONFLICT SETTINGS written by OLIVIER MUMBERE MUHONGYA and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2013-06-26 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After decades of aid support from Western countries, my country, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, is still regressing. Nothing is done to improve seriously accountability and transparency. This abnormal situation confronts some people who are pulling the strings of power and would like to keep the status quo. This situation drew my attention and prompted me to understand how postconflict countries strive to get back to normalcy. Besides, postconflict situations by nature seem to condone many countries—both donors and poor countries—from engaging in accountable and transparent ways of managing business. I do believe that in desperate situation of conflict and post conflict all people tend to behave the same way. This is part of our being humans. Therefore, aid effectiveness is the best help developed countries should provide to poor countries in order to meet the millennium development goals and have a better world.

In Dancing in the Glory of Monsters, renowned political activist and researcher Jason K. Stearns has written a compelling and deeply-reported narrative of how Congo became a failed state that collapsed into a war of retaliatory massacres.
