Book The Democracy of the Constitution and Other Addresses and Essays

Download or read book The Democracy of the Constitution and Other Addresses and Essays written by Henry Cabot Lodge and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Democracy of the Constitution, and Other Addresses and Essays The first five papers in this volume deal with the Constitution of the United States, with the "democracy" which it created and limited, and with the changes in it which are now proposed, affecting the courts and the principles of representative government. I have endeavored to omit, so far as possible, any repetitions, but as all the addresses are concerned with different phases of the same subject there are certain points where the same argument must recur in order to make clear the particular aspect of the question to which the main discussion is devoted. I desire to express to Messrs. Funk Wagnalls, to the publishers of the Century, and to the publishers of the Outlook my thanks for their kind permission to reprint three of the essays here republished. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Classic Books Library presents this brand new edition of “The Federalist Papers”, a collection of separate essays and articles compiled in 1788 by Alexander Hamilton. Following the United States Declaration of Independence in 1776, the governing doctrines and policies of the States lacked cohesion. “The Federalist”, as it was previously known, was constructed by American statesman Alexander Hamilton, and was intended to catalyse the ratification of the United States Constitution. Hamilton recruited fellow statesmen James Madison Jr., and John Jay to write papers for the compendium, and the three are known as some of the Founding Fathers of the United States. Alexander Hamilton (c. 1755–1804) was an American lawyer, journalist and highly influential government official. He also served as a Senior Officer in the Army between 1799-1800 and founded the Federalist Party, the system that governed the nation’s finances. His contributions to the Constitution and leadership made a significant and lasting impact on the early development of the nation of the United States.

Book Toward an American Conservatism

Download or read book Toward an American Conservatism written by Joseph W. Postell and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-11-12 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the Progressive Era (1880-1920), leading thinkers and politicians transformed American politics. Historians and political scientists have given a great deal of attention to the progressives who effected this transformation. Yet relatively little is known about the conservatives who opposed these progressive innovations, despite the fact that they played a major role in the debates and outcomes of this period of American history. These early conservatives represent a now-forgotten source of inspiration for modern American conservatism. This volume gives these constitutional conservatives their first full explanation and demonstrates their ongoing relevance to contemporary American conservatism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: iAmerican Constitutional Law Essays, Cases, and Comparative Notes is a unique casebook that encourages students and citizens of the Constitution to think critically about the fundamental principles and policies of the American constitutional order. The book has two prominent features that distinguish it from other books in the field an emphasis on the social, political and moral theory that provides meaning to constitutional law and interpretation; and a comparative perspective that situates the American experience within a world context that serves as an invaluable prism through which to illuminate the special features of our own constitutional order. While the focus of the book is entirely on American constitutional law, the book asks students to consider what, if anything, is unique in American constitutional life and what we share with other constitutional democracies. Each chapter is preceded by an introductory essay that highlights these major themes and also situates the cases in their proper historical and political context. For students in the liberal arts, as well as law students seeking a richer encounter with the multifaceted nature of the American constitutional experience, this book addresses all of their concerns. The new edition offers Updated and expanded treatment of key cases on gerrymandering and campaign finance Expanded discussion of the Court's work federalism and the commerce clause Discussions of the Court's new cases on the death penalty, including a discussion of the controversy within the Court about the propriety of citing foreign case law An expanded discussion of the Court's recent work in the area of privacy, including the Court's decisions with regard to partial birth abortions and same sex marriages An expanded section on the Court's continuing efforts to develop a coherent takings clause jurisprudence Full coverage of new developments and cases concerning affirmative action and school desegregation
