Download or read book Last Best Gifts written by Kieran Healy and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2010-08-15 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than any other altruistic gesture, blood and organ donation exemplifies the true spirit of self-sacrifice. Donors literally give of themselves for no reward so that the life of an individual—often anonymous—may be spared. But as the demand for blood and organs has grown, the value of a system that depends solely on gifts has been called into question, and the possibility has surfaced that donors might be supplemented or replaced by paid suppliers. Last Best Gifts offers a fresh perspective on this ethical dilemma by examining the social organization of blood and organ donation in Europe and the United States. Gifts of blood and organs are not given everywhere in the same way or to the same extent—contrasts that allow Kieran Healy to uncover the pivotal role that institutions play in fashioning the contexts for donations. Procurement organizations, he shows, sustain altruism by providing opportunities to give and by producing public accounts of what giving means. In the end, Healy suggests, successful systems rest on the fairness of the exchange, rather than the purity of a donor’s altruism or the size of a financial incentive.

Book Demand Creating What People Love Before They Know They Want It

Download or read book Demand Creating What People Love Before They Know They Want It written by Adrian Slywotzky With Karl Web and published by Hachette UK. This book was released on 2011-10-27 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Demand is one of the few economic terms almost everyone knows. Demand drives supply. When demand rises, it stimulates growth - jobs are created, the economy flourishes and society thrives. So goes the theory. It sounds simple, yet almost no one really understands demand, including the business owners, company leaders and policy makers who try to stimulate and satisfy it. DEMAND is a book with breakout general non-fiction potential which searches for clues as to where demand really comes from, and why, and how we might control it.

Book Information Wants to Be Shared

Download or read book Information Wants to Be Shared written by Joshua Gans and published by Harvard Business Review Press. This book was released on 2012-10-02 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stewart Brand famously declared, “Information wants to be free.” Except he didn’t (not really). And it doesn’t. Information is much more complicated than that. What information really wants—what makes it more valuable, useful, and immediate, Joshua Gans argues—is to be shared. Using the tools and logic of information economics, Gans shows how sharing enhances most information’s value. He also shows how the business models of traditional media companies, gatekeepers who have relied on scarcity and control, have collapsed in the face of new technologies. Equally important, he argues that sharing can revive moribund, threatened industries even as he examines platforms that have, almost accidentally, thrived in this new environment. Provocative, intriguing, and useful, Information Wants to Be Shared will change the way you think about your ideas and the media you use to consume and produce them. HBR Singles provide brief yet potent business ideas, in digital form, for today's thinking professional.

Download or read book The Ethical Demand written by Knud Ejler Løgstrup and published by University of Notre Dame Pess. This book was released on 1997-02-15 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Knud Ejler Løgstrup’s The Ethical Demand is the most original influential Danish contribution to moral philosophy in this century. This is the first time that the complete text has been available in English translation. Originally published in 1956, it has again become the subject of widespread interest in Europe, now read in the context of the whole of Løgstrup’s work. The Ethical Demand marks a break not only with utilitarianism and with Kantianism but also with Kierkegaard’s Christian existentialism and with all forms of subjectivism. Yet Løgstrup’s project is not destructive. Rather, it is a presentation of an alternative understanding of interpersonal life. The ethical demand presupposes that all interaction between human beings involves a basic trust. Its content cannot be derived from any rule. For Løgstrup, there is not Christian morality and secular morality. There is only human morality.

  • Author : Robert L. Perkins
  • Publisher : Mercer University Press

Download or read book Works of Love written by Robert L. Perkins and published by Mercer University Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "To claim that Works of Love is an important philosophical essay is to assume hazardous burden of proof. The book's title is an allusion to the Bible's injunction that we should love our neighbor as we love ourselves, a far cry, far instance, from Diotoma's ladder of erotic desire up which we climb from the love of bodies until we catch a vision of that "single sea of beauty," beauty itself (Plato, Symposium). This contrast, given that some of some of our neighbors may not be particularly likable or one may even be a determined enemy, suggests immediately to some that a book with such an obviously religious title must be excessively moralistic and, at best, full of sermon helps for the harried clergy or, at worst, laden with rules for the unlearned laity. A casual perusal of a few paragraphs, however, shows these "put-down" views of the book to be unfounded"--
