Book The Demand for Electricity in Western U S Irrigated Agriculture

Download or read book The Demand for Electricity in Western U S Irrigated Agriculture written by Jeffery D. Connor and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The overall objective of the research reported here is to empirically measure the ability of farmers to mitigate the impact of rising electricity prices by substituting relatively inexpensive alternative inputs. A dual cost methodology is employed because it allows theoretically consistent derivation of own price and factor substitution elasticities, conditional upon exogenously determined environmental, economic and technological constraints. Furthermore, the framework allows for an assessment of the appropriateness of producer cost minimization behavior, which has been assumed but not explicitly tested in earlier studies. A secondary objective is to analyze possible implications of future irrigation electricity price changes on producer, regional economic and electric utility company welfare. The most notable finding is that the demand for irrigation electricity is quite price elastic. This indicates that, historically, when the price of electricity has been relatively high, producers have found ways to use less of this input. The derived price elasticity of demand for irrigation electricity ( -1.45) confirms results of other researchers. Gardener and Young; Whittlesey; and Maddigan, Chern and Rizy all estimated price elasticity for irrigation in the range from -1 to -2. Tests of the conditions necessary to maintain the assumption of cost minimization, do not confirm that this assumption is strictly justified in the present study.

Book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences

Download or read book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences written by Wade H. Shafer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Oata Analysis and Synthesis (CINOAS) * at Purdue. University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 33 (thesis year 1988) a total of 13,273 theses titles from 23 Canadian and 1 85 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 33 reports theses submitted in 1988, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book Energy and Water Use in Irrigated Agriculture During Drought Conditions

Download or read book Energy and Water Use in Irrigated Agriculture During Drought Conditions written by and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Energy requirements for irrigation vary widely across California as a function of the proximity of water sources, the methods of irrigation, and the water requirements of the crops. The objectives of this study are to determine water and energy use for agricultural irrigation and during the 1977 season; describe the responses of agriculture to the drought conditions of 1977; and identify the present and potential water and energy conservation sstrategies applicable to California. The analysis of electricity and water requirements for irrigated agriculture was started as a part of a two-phase project. The purposes of the overall study are to assess the impacts of the drought on California electricity supply and demand, to evaluate remedial measures, and to develop a methodology for such assessments. The methodology used for determining electricity requirements to pump irrigation water focuses on the hydrologic basins of the Central Valley. The method employs several factors to calculate the final energy demand for pumping. The factors include unit energy use to obtain ground and surface water, average water use by individual crop, type of irrigation, and estimated crop acreage planted in 1977. Section II (''Energy/Water Use During Drought Year'') contains the assumptions and calculations used to determine the total electricity demand. The dry years of 1976 and 1977 present an opportunity to gain a better understanding of how farmers meet their irrigation needs with limited supplies of surface water. Section III (''Agriculture's Responses of Drought Conditions'') outlines the major strategies employed in 1977. Since the overall purpose of this present study is to determine if this information can help develop a long-term approach for water and energy conservation in irrigated agriculture, the present and potential conservation trategies applicable to California were identified and presented in Section IV.

Download or read book Energy s Water Demand Trends Vulnerabilities and Management written by Nicole T. Carter and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2010 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nation's energy choices embody many tradeoffs. Water use is one of those tradeoffs. The energy choices before Congress represent vastly different demands on domestic freshwater. The energy sector's water consumption is projected to rise 50% from 2005 to 2030. This rising water demand derives from both an increase in the amount of energy demanded and shifts to more water-intense energy sources and technologies. This report discusses this issue as well as related issues that may arise for the 112th Congress.
