Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Demand and Price Situation, Vol. 52: April 1959 Heavy supplies continue to dominate the agricultural outlook, even though consumer markets for food and other products of our farms are strong. Moreover, foreign takings of U. S. Farm prod nots in the second half of this year will likely exceed those of the last half of 1958, reflecting an improving economic situation abroad, larger financial reserves, and continued large U. S. Government export programs. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Economic Dignity

Download or read book Economic Dignity written by Gene Sperling and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2021-10-12 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Timely and important . . . It should be our North Star for the recovery and beyond.” —Hillary Clinton “Sperling makes a forceful case that only by speaking to matters of the spirit can liberals root their belief in economic justice in people’s deepest aspirations—in their sense of purpose and self-worth.” —The New York Times When Gene Sperling was in charge of coordinating economic policy in the Obama White House, he found himself surprised when serious people in Washington told him that the Obama focus on health care was a distraction because it was “not focused on the economy.” How, he asked, was the fear felt by millions of Americans of being one serious illness away from financial ruin not considered an economic issue? Too often, Sperling found that we measured economic success by metrics like GDP instead of whether the economy was succeeding in lifting up the sense of meaning, purpose, fulfillment, and security of people. In Economic Dignity, Sperling frames the way forward in a time of wrenching change and offers a vision of an economy whose guiding light is the promotion of dignity for all Americans.

Download or read book The Demand and Price Situation Vol 23 written by United States Department Of Agriculture and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-08-16 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Demand and Price Situation, Vol. 23: November 1956 Exports of U. S. Farm products in 1955-56 were up from a year earlier by 11 percent in value and, with lower export prices, by 17 percent in volume. Expanded surplus disposal programs, general prosperity abroad, and reduced foreign supplies of some commodities contributed to rising exports this year. More than percent of agricultural exports were financed by Government programs in 1955-56 and the importance of these programs may increase in 1956-57. With prospects for cotton exports much more than double the mil lion bales exported in 1955-56, agricultural exports may exceed the record 1] billion dollars exported in 1951-52. With reduced prices such an increase would imply a substantial increase in the volume of products exported. Exports of wheat, rice and fats and oils will likely be high but takings of tobacco and feed grains may be somewhat smaller than in 1955-56. Download or read book The Demand and Price Situation Vol 56 written by Usda Agricultural Research Service and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-11 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Demand and Price Situation, Vol. 56: August 1959 Organization for European Economic Cooperation, General Statistics. While exports of United States automobiles in 1958 fell by about 19 per cent, domestic production dropped by almost 30 percent. Both exports and do mestic production fell when demand eased because of the recession here and abroad. United States factory output recovered during the first half of 1959, but exports remained relatively low. In addition to substantially increased foreign competition, many foreign countries limit imports of United States automobiles with quantitative restrictions and tariffs in order to conserve scarce dollar reserves or to protect home production. Heavy taxes placed on luxury goods, including automobiles, also widens the price gap between American and foreign cars. Fuel economy is more important in many foreign countries because of the higher price of gasoline compared with that in the United States. Jmany consumers abroad cannot afford to purchase the relatively more expensive American cars because of the lower level of income.
