Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Delphian Course, Vol. 1: A Systematic Plan of Education, Embracing the World's Progress and Development of the Liberal Arts There is no doubt but that implicit faith directed the first visitors to Delphi, and beyond question this faith to some extent survived. The peasant accepted literally the presence of deity, but there have been in all ages the discerning who have distinguished between the symbol and that symbolized, and certainly the keen, alert Greeks did not remain blind adherents Of antiquated conceptions. The wisdom of the Delphian priests was revered and their judgments accepted much in the same way as were those of the seers who taught the children Of Israel at the city gates, so that the Oracle of Delphi still remained potent - a name with which to con jure - long after the belief that the deity himself was present had given place to another. Today, the number who ask Whence cometh wisdom, and where is the place of understanding? Is more than all who ever sought the Offices of the priestess on her tripod. We have learned that not gaseous exhalations, but a thorough under standing Of the past, will reveal the secrets of the future, and that these oracles are best interpreted by thoughtful groups, instead of by one frenzied prophetess. The name Delphian was chosen for this national educational movement because we too are seekers for wisdom, and we would not lose the spell of the storied past, as we renew the age-old quest. Download or read book The Delphian Course Vol 3 written by Delphian Society and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-07-03 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Delphian Course, Vol. 3: A Systematic Plan of Education, Embracing the World's Progress and Development of the Liberal Arts The first original of the drama was a religious worship, consisting only of a chorus, which was nothing else but an hymn to a deity. As luxury and voluptuousness prevailed over innocence and religion, this form of worship degener ated into tragedies; in which, however, the chorus so far remembered its first office as to brand everything that was vicious and recommend everything that was laudable, to inter cede with Heaven for the innocent and to implore its vengeance on the criminal. Homer and Hesiod intimate to us how this art should be applied, when they represent the Muses as surrounding Jupiter, and warbling their hymns about his throne. - Addison: Spec tator, 405. The origin of the Greek drama is to be found in the yearly celebrations observed in honor of Dionysus, god of wine. Riotous festivals were held, during which the god of wine was extolled with carousals and boisterous songs, - these having been introduced into Greece from Thrace, where they were even Wilder in their nature. Dionysus had taught men how to grow the vine and how to make delicious wine from its fruit. He was conceived to be a rollicking god, jolly and restless, and was very popular in Hellas. Myths connected him with a company of satyrs - half men, half goats, who sang his praises and drank his wine, and went about leading others to join their train. That he might be appropriately worshipped, people banded together in companies at certain seasons of the year and indulged in noisy revelry, as Silenus and his satyrs were supposed to do. In fantastic dances and wild choruses they did honor to the god. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
