Book excerpt: Self-deprecating, self-aware and always thoughtful, this is the story of one man's blind date with the magnificent and terrible beauty that is India. With illustrations by Miki Lowe, it is an insightful, entertaining and beautiful book. All proceeds from it will be donated to the charity Asha who work with the poorest people in Delhi's society. For more details about this project, visit: https://thedelhidispatch.com/ PLEASE NOTE THAT THERE ARE TWO VERSIONS OF THE PAPERBACK EDITION OF THIS BOOK - ONE WITH BLACK AND WHITE ILLUSTRATIONS (£11.99), THE OTHER WITH COLOR ILLUSTRATIONS (£19.99). DUE TO THE COSTS OF PRINTING IN COLOR, BOTH CONTRIBUTE SIMILAR AMOUNTS OF MONEY TO ASHA. BOTH HAVE COLOR COVERS. "There was one major barrier between me and the Yoga studio: MG road. Along MG road flowed an unstoppable stream of cars, lorries, rickshaws, cows, pedestrians, bicycles, and a metro line. Google suggested that there was a place to cross the road half a kilometre from my house, but upon reaching the spot, I discovered the bitter truth: three white stripes of a zebra crossing, fading out into asphalt blackened by tyre marks and oil stains. Standing on the first of these white stripes was a lady whose head reached no higher than my elbow. She was wearing a green sari and holding a rusty bicycle. I decided that she was my best hope. As she stepped out into the flow of traffic, I tucked in close beside her." Arriving in India from London for an unexpected six-month work trip, Robbie Gilmore is excited and nervous. Above all, he wants to use his time to the full; to dive in, to experience and to learn about this fascinating, challenging and sometimes overwhelming country. This book tells of his adventures and mishaps as he tries to go beyond the tourist experience of India. It also shares his efforts to understand modern India through the lens of history, conscious always of his position as an outsider. All proceeds from this book will be donated to the charity Asha. The word "Asha" means "hope" in Hindi. Founded in 1988, Asha works with Delhi's poorest residents, giving people living in slum areas hope by allowing them to realise their potential, regardless of background, caste or religious beliefs. Since 1988, Asha has developed a strong track record in improving the lives of the urban poor and as a result, has won the respect and support of politicians in India and around the world. Asha believes that the key to tackling the poverty cycle lies in educated, healthy, empowered individuals who can transcend their personal circumstances and transform their own lives, their families and ultimately their communities. They currently work with around 900,000 people in more than 90 of Delhi's slum colonies. Asha were not involved in the writing of this book, or the design of the illustrations. As such, the contents of this book do not necessarily represent Ashas views, or anybody affiliated with Asha's work. The views in this book are those of the author's alone, and he takes full responsibility for them.

Book Conflicting Visions

Download or read book Conflicting Visions written by Ryan Touhey and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2015-05-15 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1974, India shocked the world by detonating a nuclear device. In the diplomatic controversy that ensued, the Canadian government expressed outrage that India had extracted plutonium from a Canadian reactor donated only for peaceful purposes. In the aftermath, relations between the two nations cooled considerably. As Conflicting Visions reveals, Canada and India’s relationship was turbulent long before the first bomb blast. From the time of India’s independence from Britain, Ottawa sought to build bridges between Indian and the West through dialogue and foreign aid. New Delhi, however, had a different vision for its future, and throughout the Cold War mistrust between the two nations deepened. Ryan Touhey draws on archival records, personal papers, and interviews from Canada, India, the United States, and Britain to trace the breakdown of this complicated bilateral relationship. In the process, he deepens our understanding of the history of Canadian foreign aid and international relations during the Cold War.

Book Beyond Shangri La

    Book Details:
  • Author : John Kenneth Knaus
  • Publisher : Duke University Press
  • Release : 2012-11-19

  • Pages : 375 pages

Download or read book Beyond Shangri La written by John Kenneth Knaus and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2012-11-19 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beyond Shangri-La chronicles relations between the Tibetans and the United States since 1908, when a Dalai Lama first met with U.S. representatives. What was initially a distant alliance became more intimate and entangled in the late 1950s, when the Tibetan people launched an armed resistance movement against the Chinese occupiers. The Tibetans fought to oust the Chinese and to maintain the presence of the current Dalai Lama and his direction of their country. In 1958, John Kenneth Knaus volunteered to serve in a major CIA program to support the Tibetans. For the next seven years, as an operations officer working from India, from Colorado, and from Washington, D.C., he cooperated with the Tibetan rebels as they utilized American assistance to contest Chinese domination and to attain international recognition as an independent entity. Since the late 1950s, the rugged resolve of the Dalai Lama and his people and the growing respect for their efforts to free their homeland from Chinese occupation have made Tibet's political and cultural status a pressing issue in international affairs. So has the realization by nations, including the United States, that their geopolitical interests would best be served by the defeat of the Chinese and the achievement of Tibetan self-determination. Beyond Shangri-La provides unique insight into the efforts of the U.S. government and committed U.S. citizens to support a free Tibet.

Book Rethinking Place in South Asian and Islamic Art 1500 Present

Download or read book Rethinking Place in South Asian and Islamic Art 1500 Present written by Deborah S. Hutton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-10-04 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Place plays a fundamental role in the structuring of the discipline of Art History. And yet, place also limits the questions art historians can ask and impairs analysis of objects and locations in the interstices of established, ossified categories. The chapters in this interdisciplinary volume investigate place in all of its dynamism and complexity: several call into question traditional constructions regarding place in Art History, while others explore the fundamental role that place plays in lived experience. The particular nexus for this collection lies at the intersection and overlap of two major subfields in the history of art: South Asia and the Islamic world, both of which are seemingly geographically determined, yet at the same time uncategorizable as place with their ever-shifting and contested borders. The eleven chapters brought together here move from the early modern through to the contemporary, and span particular monuments and locations ranging from Asia and Europe to Africa and the Americas. The chapters take on the question of place as it operates in more obvious settings, such as architectural monuments and exhibitionary contexts, while also probing the way place operates when objects move or when the very place they exist in transforms dramatically. This volume engages place through the movement of objects, the evocation of senses, desires, and memories and the on-going project of articulating the parameters of place and location.

Book Smarter Than Their Machines

Download or read book Smarter Than Their Machines written by John Cullinane and published by Morgan & Claypool Publishers. This book was released on 2014-11-01 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Smarter Than Their Machines: Oral Histories of the Pioneers of Interactive Computing is based on oral histories archived at the Charles Babbage Institute, University of Minnesota. Included are the oral histories of some key pioneers of the computer industry selected by John that led to interactive computing, such as Richard Bloch, Gene Amdahl, Herbert W. Robinson, Sam Wyly, J.C.R. Licklider, Ivan Sutherland, Larry Roberts, Robert Kahn, Marvin Minsky, Michael Dertouzos, and Joseph Traub, as well as his own. John has woven them together via introductions that is, in essence, a personal walk down the computer industry road. John had the unique advantage of having been part of, or witness to, much of the history contained in these oral histories beginning as a co-op student at Arthur D. Little, Inc., in the 1950’s. Eventually, he would become a pioneer in his own right by creating the computer industry's first successful software products company (Cullinane Corporation). However, an added benefit of reading these oral histories is that they contain important messages for our leaders of today, at all levels, including that government, industry, and academia can accomplish great things when working together in an effective way. This is how the computer industry was created, which then led to the Internet, both totally unanticipated just 75 years ago.
