Book excerpt: Originally published in 1852 titled, The Condition, Elevation, Emigration, and Destiny of the Colored People of the United States, Politically Considered. This book first treats on how slavery, proscription, and class oppression has worked throughout "civilization" as we know it. It then explores how slavery in the South and class oppression in the North has worked against black people here in American since the Mayflower. Policies geared toward the subjugation of blacks based of baseless theories and erroneous assertions of their "inferiority" are dashed to bits as Delany presents example after example of incredibly productive, inventive, and courageous black people throughout American History up until the book's release in 1852. Delany also points out the means of which black people can be elevated above their oppressed state. The book details the legitimate claims of colored people to be recognized as naturalized, UNQUALIFIED citizenship, eligible to vote and hold office. Delany gives every article of the infamous FUGITIVE SLAVE LAW and predicts that to abolish this law would mean the end of the National Compact, and a dissolution of the CONFEDERATIVE UNION. Seeing no change in sight, Delany strongly points out that the blacks would never be accepted as unqualified citizens and the only way to escape AMERICAN PROSCRIPTION is to Emigrate to Canada, South or Central America, or yes...Africa. He draws out cohesive and well thought out plans to do it. This book details how America can and should right the wrongs inflicted on an unoffending people. Out-of-print until now, it has been available to the public only through select libraries. At the time of its publication in 1879, this valuable resource presented a bold challenge to racist views of African inferiority. Delany wrote in opposition to a developing oppressive intellectualism that used Darwin's thesis, "the survival of the fittest," to support its demented theories of Black inferiority. Skillfully blending biblical history, archaeology and anthropology, Delany offered evidence to the "serious inquirer" suggesting the first humans were African, and that these Africans were ". . . builders of the pyramids, sculptors of the sphinxes, and original god-kings. . . ." With such radical assertions, Delany advanced a model of ancient history that contradicted the very foundation of intellectual racism. He believed knowledge of one's past was essential, and that it could provide Black people with the regenerative force necessary to inspire their self-improvement. Were he alive today, Delany would certainly feel at home with the present generation of Africancentrists, especially since he developed and articulated so many of their arguments more than a century ago.

He used his talents to live a full life as a physician, army officer, author, politician, journalist, abolitionist, and pioneer Black nationalist. Among his wirting The Condition Elevation, Emigration and Destiny of the Colored People of the United States is often considered his seminal and most controversial work. It was first published in 1852, a time of intense conflict between proslavery and antislavery forces. Delany used The Condition, Elevation, Emigration to analyze this conflict and its probable solution. Crafting a skillful argument, he attacked slavery and the subjugation of Black people.He recorded their achievements in business, agriculture, literature, the military, and other professions. Concluding that Blacks would never be allowed to coexist with whites, Delany completed his analysis by suggesting possible locations for Black emigration.

How did this remarkable role model for late blooming manage it? After a disastrous teenage marriage to a drunken sixty-one-year-old squire, she took control of her own life, pursuing creative projects, spurning suitors and gaining friends. At forty-three, she married Jonathan Swift's friend Dr. Patrick Delany, and lived in Ireland in a true expression of midlife love. But after twenty-five years and a terrible lawsuit, her husband died. Sent into a netherland of mourning, Mrs Delany was rescued by her friend, the fabulously wealthy Duchess of Portland. The Duchess introduced Delany to the botanical adventurers of the day and a bonanza of exotic plants from Captain Cook's voyage, which became the inspiration for her art. Peacock herself first saw Mrs Delany's work more than twenty years before she wrote The Paper Garden, but 'like a book you know is too old for you', she put the thought of the old woman away. She went on to marry and cherish the happiness of her own midlife, in a parallel to Mrs. Delany, and by chance rediscovered the mosaicks decades later.
