Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the things that is common to true believers is a sense of unworthiness because of sin. This may cause us to doubt both ourselves and God's love for us. Here is an insightful handling of these matters by one of the most pastoral of the Puritans. Love's conclusion is that the great enemy of our souls will do all he can to take our eyes off of our Savior, even if that means an over-preoccupation with sin and self. This book gives Scriptural guidelines to recover a sense of God's love, to give comfort to those who are convicted, and to convict those who may be falsely comforted. This is important reading for anyone who longs to be more sanctified and satisfied. There is also another work by Christopher Love at the end of this book called "A Treatise of Angels."

Book Augustine and the Cure of Souls

Download or read book Augustine and the Cure of Souls written by Paul R. Kolbet and published by University of Notre Dame Pess. This book was released on 2009-11-15 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Augustine and the Cure of Souls situates Augustine within the ancient philosophical tradition of using words to order emotions. Paul Kolbet uncovers a profound continuity in Augustine’s thought, from his earliest pre-baptismal writings to his final acts as bishop, revealing a man deeply indebted to the Roman past and yet distinctly Christian. Rather than supplanting his classical learning, Augustine’s Christianity reinvigorated precisely those elements of Roman wisdom that he believed were slipping into decadence. In particular, Kolbet addresses the manner in which Augustine not only used classical rhetorical theory to express his theological vision, but also infused it with theological content. This book offers a fresh reading of Augustine’s writings—particularly his numerous, though often neglected, sermons—and provides an accessible point of entry into the great North African bishop’s life and thought.

  • Publisher : University of Illinois Press
  • Release : 2022-08-15

Download or read book Healing Souls written by Eric G. Swedin and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2022-08-15 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this first history of psychotherapy among the Latter-day Saints, Eric G. Swedin describes how modern psychology has affected the "healing of souls” in the LDS community. But he also shows how this community melded its theological doctrines with mainstream psychiatry when secular concepts clashed with fundamental tenets of Mormonism. The psychological professions pervasive in twentieth-century American society were viewed as dangerous by some religious communities. Healing Souls describes the LDS community's mixed feelings about science and modernity: while valuing knowledge, Mormons feared a challenge to faith. Nonetheless, psychology courses were introduced at Brigham Young University, and LDS psychotherapists began to introduce new ideas and practices to the community. Swedin portrays the rise of professional organizations such as the Association of Mormon Counselors and Psychotherapists, as well as the importance of Allen E. Bergin, first director of the BYU Institute for Studies in Values and Human Behavior. Bergin and others paved the way for the LDS adoption of professional psychotherapy as an essential element of their "cure of souls." Important chapters take up LDS psychopathology, feminist dissent, LDS philosophies of sexuality, and the LDS rejection of mainstream psychotherapy's selfist psychology on the basis of theological doctrines of family salvation, eternalism, and the natural man. Healing Souls contributes to a more complete historical picture of the mental health professions in North America and a better understanding of how religious traditions and psychology have influenced each other.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hypocrisy replaces virtue when men cover their sins rather than confess them to God. This is all too common when men do not preach and practice a Biblical doctrine of confession. The challenge is first to restore the meaning of confession as taught in the Scriptures. As long as confession is seen as a Romanist doctrine, we have no hope of recovering this vital aspect of Christianity. In this path-breaking volume R. J. Rushdoony examines the Biblical teaching on confession and sets it over against the errors of Romanism and the neo-Freudianism of modern Christian counseling. Despite the subject matter this book is remarkably readable and is sure to empower both clergy and laity as they discover the powerful tool of Biblical confession.
