Book The Death of God and the Meaning of Life

Download or read book The Death of God and the Meaning of Life written by Julian Young and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-05-16 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the meaning of life? In today's secular, post-religious scientific world, this question has become a serious preoccupation. But it also has a long history: many major philosophers have thought deeply about it, as Julian Young so vividly illustrates in this thought-provoking second edition of The Death of God and the Meaning of Life. Three new chapters explore Søren Kierkegaard’s attempts to preserve a Christian answer to the question of the meaning of life, Karl Marx's attempt to translate this answer into naturalistic and atheistic terms, and Sigmund Freud’s deep pessimism about the possibility of any version of such an answer. Part 1 presents an historical overview of philosophers from Plato to Marx who have believed in a meaning of life, either in some supposed ‘other’ world or in the future of this world. Part 2 assesses what happened when the traditional structures that give life meaning began to erode. With nothing to take their place, these structures gave way to the threat of nihilism, to the appearance that life is meaningless. Young looks at the responses to this threat in chapters on Nietzsche, Heidegger, Sartre, Camus, Foucault and Derrida. Fully revised and updated throughout, this highly engaging exploration of fundamental issues will captivate anyone who’s ever asked themselves where life’s meaning (if there is one) really lies. It also makes a perfect historical introduction to philosophy, particularly to the continental tradition.

Book Ancient Western Asia Beyond the Paradigm of Collapse and Regeneration 1200 900 BCE

Download or read book Ancient Western Asia Beyond the Paradigm of Collapse and Regeneration 1200 900 BCE written by Maria Grazia Masetti-Rouault and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2024-05-07 with total page 660 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New results and interpretations challenging the notion of a uniform, macroregional collapse throughout the Late Bronze Age Eastern Mediterranean Ancient Western Asia Beyond the Paradigm of Collapse and Regeneration (1200–900 BCE) presents select essays originating in a two-year research collaboration between New York University and Paris Sciences et Lettres. The contributions here offer new results and interpretations of the processes and outcomes of the transition from the Late Bronze Age to the Iron Age in three broad regions: Anatolia, northern Mesopotamia, and the Levant. Together, these challenge the notion of a uniform, macroregional collapse throughout the Eastern Mediterranean, followed by the regeneration of political powers. Current research on newly discovered or reinterpreted textual and material evidence from Western Asia instead suggests that this transition was characterized by a diversity of local responses emerging from diverse environmental settings and culture complexes, as evident in the case studies collected here in history, archaeology, and art history. The editors avoid particularism by adopting a regional organization, with the aim of identifying and tracing similar processes and outcomes emerging locally across the three regions. Ultimately, this volume reimagines the Late Bronze–Iron Age transition as the emergence of a set of recursive processes and outcomes nested firmly in the local cultural interactions of western Asia before the beginning of the new, unifying era of Assyrian imperialism.

Book Sex Death and God in L A

Download or read book Sex Death and God in L A written by David Reid and published by Pantheon. This book was released on 2013-10-02 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Los Angeles is the labyrinth at the end of the American Dream, a city often celebrated, often condemned—rarely understood. In this fascinating and unusual collection David Reid has gathered together the novelists, journalists, and cultural critics who could best debunk the myths, define the truths, and decipher the strange iconography of this “bronzed paradise” of fourteen million inhabitants. Here are reports and reflections on: the new Latin-American and Asian populations of South Central and the East Side and the old establishment in the West Side’s hidden hilltop enclaves; Downtown with its heavily mortgaged office towers held by Canadian and Japanese landlords; the shuttered factories, thriving sweatshops, and gerrymandered “rotten boroughs” of post-industrial L.A.; architecture from Irving Gill to Frank O. Gehry; avatars and messiahs from Krishnamurti to L. Ron Hubbard; rituals of power and abjection in Movieland; and yoga and lust in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles Times and Nation columnist Alexander Cockburn; Mike Davis, author of City of Quartz; L.A. Weeklywriters Lynell George and Rubén Martínez; novelists Carolyn See, Eve Babitz, and David Thomson; architectural historian Thomas S. Hines; and Academy Award-winning screenwriter Jeremy Larner are among those who investigate the mysteries of the city which, as Cockburn writes, is “the only megalopolis of the First World growing at a rate comparable to those supercities—Sao Paulo, Cairo, and Canton—of the Third World.”

Book The City of God the Bride of Christ and the Second Death According to Revelation of John

Download or read book The City of God the Bride of Christ and the Second Death According to Revelation of John written by Victor Pierobon and published by Victor Pierobon. This book was released on 2018-12-18 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The true consolidation of this book and 'How to Believe in Christ According to the Gospel of John' are both consolidated in "The Way, the Truth, and the Light According to the Gospel and Gospel and Revelation of John" which is FREE to download from here and others online. This is a sequel to "How to believe in Christ According to the Gospel of John". Revelation affirms reincarnation, that we are judged by our works, and describes the City of God as half the size of the planet Mercury - a volume able to accommodate more than 47,000 trillion apartments. It chronicles the redemption of Adam's lineage by the incorporation of God in Christ, and Christ in Adam's human lineage. The Second Death is mentioned four times in Revelation. It describes the Final Judgment of all souls, including the unforgivable souls and followers of Satan that are not in the Book of Life and other books regarding their works. The bad souls are cast into the Lake of Fire, assumed to perish, as Christ said in Matthew [10:28]: “And fear not them who kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Matthew [13:30-40 ] lays out Revelation's plot: “Let both [the good and the evil] grow together until the harvest:... He that sows the good seed is the Son of man; 38 The field is the world; the good seed are the children of the kingdom, but the tares are the children of the wicked one; 39 The enemy that sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels. 40 As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire [same as the second death's lake of fire in Revelation]; so shall it be in the end of this world.” And in comparison, Revelation [22:10-12] “Seal not the sayings of the prophecy of this book: for the time is at hand. [11] He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still. [12] And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.” The analysis of John's Gospel and his Revelation vision is closely tied to Genesis, forming a non-contradictory system of beliefs. Pure Christianity is by far the toughest religion to follow. The true early Christians did not passively submit to torture and death because they liked it, but by believing in and following the teachings and example of Christ. It required a suppression of all of their survival instincts, procreation instincts, social approval and status, wealth, and worldly pleasures and passions. For example, it requests that followers to be celibate, give up worldly goods, turn the other cheek, give their shirt off their back, hate/deny their worldly life, avoid the honor of men, serve and feed all in need, seek martyrdom, and more. Yet it is also a most rewarding religion based on its ideals in the pureness of body, heart, mind, will, and awareness it advocates in the spirit. Unfortunately, very few can, and even those who spoke and saw Jesus directly had a very hard time following his teachings and example. Yet billions currently believe themselves to be true Christians. All true knowledge should be obtained internally by your own subjective effort and by the Holy Spirit of Truth and not just by reading, and if it were not so, Christ would have written copious works for us to be saved with just an easy read.

Book Death the Last God

Download or read book Death the Last God written by Anne Geraghty and published by John Hunt Publishing. This book was released on 2014-11-28 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anne Geraghty was a clinical psychologist and psychotherapist when her son, Tim Guest, author of My Life in Orange died suddenly. Her old life ended. She went on a search for her lost son. Where was he? What was he? Did he live on in some other realm? Or had he fallen into the darkness of oblivion? Her search for Tim became an exploration into the nature of death itself. We die as we have lived. Our lives are not like those of a C12th Tibetan, a C15th Cardinal or a Zen monk; we cannot, therefore, simply turn to old maps and myths of what happens when we die. We need a new narrative of death that embraces our modern understandings of our humanity and the workings of the universe. This book is the story of a grieving mother looking for her dead son, an investigation into death in our modern world, and an exploration of our struggles to live well in the ever-present shadow of death. It is not a book with answers; it is an invitation to look at death differently. This book offers fresh and original ideas about death and dying. And it will radically change your understanding of what death is.

Download or read book The Death of the Goddess written by Patrick Colm Hogan and published by 2Leaf Press. This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE DEATH OF THE GODDESS is an epic, narrative poem that is a moving account of affection, personal loss, and grief. Inspired by Buddhism, Indic thought and Hogan’s reading of the Bhagavad Gita, the central figures are two lovers who refuse to accept unjust social hierarchies and suffer separation and death for that choice. In this groundbreaking narrative, Patrick Colm Hogan sets out to re-synthesize ancient Indian philosophy and myth, with a beauty and literary feeling (called “rasa” in Sanskrit) that are the central aspects of this poem. THE DEATH OF THE GODDESS is richly metaphorical and written in an innovative form where Hogan makes liberal use of the musical features of verse—rhyme, assonance, and alliteration—that combines aspects of formal patterning with the unexpectedness of free verse. There are no spare words—each line is crafted with careful accuracy, cutting with a surgeon’s precision. These unifying tie-ins make THE DEATH OF THE GODDESS an excellent literary achievement to be read by serious poetry lovers and students in mythology or epic literature alike.
