Book The Deformation and Fracture of Mild Steel Charpy Specimens

Download or read book The Deformation and Fracture of Mild Steel Charpy Specimens written by T. R. Wilshaw and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A qualitative analysis of the deformation mechanism of mild steel Charpy specimens in slow three-point bending is deduced from observations of plastic strain patterns revealed by Fry's reagent, and also geometrical changes in shape. The plastic strains around the notch are measured using a micro-hardness technique and related to the distance below the notch root and the angle of bend. From this the plastic strain rates around the notch root are related to the striker velocity. The effect of strain hardening on the stress distribution below the notch is determined quantitatively and an equation of state is derived to describe the conditions for cleavage fracture beyond general yield. Above general yield there is a sharp increase in the fracture load and ductility associated with a transition in the mode of fracture initiation from ductile cleavage to ductile shear. This transition is discussed in terms of the deformation mechanics and a reason for the shapes of Charpy impact energy curves is suggested. (Author).

Book Mechanics of Crack Arrest in Mild Steel

Download or read book Mechanics of Crack Arrest in Mild Steel written by Stanford University. Department of Materials Science and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dynamic K sub IC values for mild steel were measured using instrumented impact bend tests containing fatigued notches and compared with the stress intensity values in a Robertson crack arrest test. It is proposed that crack arrest occurs by the initial slowing down of the crack due to increased temperature which leads to a dramatic deceleration due to the large strain-rate sensitivity of the material. When the strain rate at the crack tip is maintained by dynamic loading which causes forced crack propagation, the crack will remain brittle to much higher temperatures than the crack arrest temperature. Book Analysis of Fracture Toughness Mechanism in Ultra fine grained Steels

Download or read book Analysis of Fracture Toughness Mechanism in Ultra fine grained Steels written by Toshihiro Hanamura and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-09-04 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, advanced steel technologies mainly developed at the National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS), Japan, for structure control, mechanical properties, and the related mechanisms are introduced and discussed. NIMS has long worked on developing advanced steel techniques, namely, producing advanced steels by using only simple alloying elements such as carbon, manganese, and silicon, and also by utilizing steel scrap. The hope is that this approach will lead to a technology of a so-called steel-to-steel recycling process, with the ultimate goal of a recycling process such as an automotive-steel-to-automotive-steel recycling process to take the place of the current cascade-type recycling system. The main idea is to utilize ultra-grain refining structures and hetero structures as well as martensite structures. In particular, the focus of this book is on tensile strength and toughness of advanced steels from both the fundamental and engineering points of view. Fundamentally, a unique approach to analysis is taken, based on fracture surface energy as effective grain size is employed to better understand the mechanism of property improvement. From the engineering point of view, in fracture toughness such factors as crack tip opening displacement (CTOD) of advanced steels are evaluated in comparison with those of conventional steels.
