Book Treacle Boy s Guide to the Game of Bridge

Download or read book Treacle Boy s Guide to the Game of Bridge written by Andrew Mountford and published by Andrew Mountford. This book was released on 2021-03-26 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A rollicking roller-coaster of a ride through the world of rubber bridge. From opening bids and responses, through the complexities of Jacoby transfers and the Blackwood convention, and why you should lead the fourth highest card of a suit, this book has it all. In fact, its got it in spades! So who is this book for? Well, everyone. A tall order, maybe, but we think we’ve managed it. If you’re a complete newcomer to the world of bridge, then this book is definitely for you. Want to know what all the fuss is about - but don’t understand why a game takes so long - and don’t know the rules, or how to begin a game, or keep it going? Then this book explains all that stuff, with lots of examples and tips to get you started. Not a novice but still consider yourself a beginner? Want to improve your bidding technique and learn a few playing tricks? Then this book is also for you. It has a host of accessible guidelines that should help sharpen up your bidding, and some neat pointers as to how you can make more of the hands you are dealt. Or perhaps you’ve been playing for a while, and want to improve - you’ve always wondered what "Jacoby transfers" and "cue bids" were all about, and why you should lead with the fourth highest card in a suit: Then there’s something here for you too. You’ll find some useful bidding conventions and playing guidelines, explained through clear examples and (we hope) lucid explanation. Even if you’ve been playing for years, and are well on your way to transitioning from an intermediate to an advanced player, this book might still be for you. It contains anecdotes and caricatures you might find familiar and maybe even amusing, and if you find something that, from your seasoned perspective, you take issue with, well - good! We’d like to hear from you, particularly if you include details we can steal without citing you as a contributor, which can go towards adding to, and hopefully improving, future editions of this book.

Book excerpt: All North American players are taught to play using a strong notrump, but that is not the way of the rest of the world. Even in North America, weak notrump systems, or even Kamikaze notrump systems, are becoming more common. This book discusses the advantages and disadvantages of playing a system with a weaker notrump opening, and shows how the 1NT range impacts the rest of the bidding system. Even those who have no interest in converting to a weak notrump range still need to know how to play against weak notrump systems. For them, the book includes advice on effective competitive methods.

Book System Over No Trump Interference

Download or read book System Over No Trump Interference written by ivan feit and published by . This book was released on 2019-10-23 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: SONTI addresses a bidding gap that is sorely needed to counter interference with constructive bidding after the opening bid of 1NT. There is one Convention, Lebensohl, that deals with this issue, but it is but it is inadequate in it's application, counter intuitive, and difficult to learn, While developing SONTI, an effort was made to keep it as simple as possible. The complete system, or parts of the system, can be can be utilized by bridge players of every level, although more accomplished players will derive greater benefit than those with less ability. SONTI will introduce several new, innovative and effective bids. Once learned , they can be applied in combination with the "old" bids such as "Transfers" , "Stayman" , "Puppet Stayman" and "Stolen Bids", along with the bidding skills you already possess, to reach the best contract. The text begins with a general explanation of why a satisfactory solution to this bidding dilemma has been so difficult to achieve, followed by the "key" element that leads to the solution of the problem. Following is the introduction of two new bids which form the foundation of SONTI. After showing how the the aforementioned "old" bids are applied seamlessly into SONTI, we demonstrate the application of SONTI with sample hands and exercises to test your comprehension. Throughout the text we introduce additional new bids including the "Partial Stopper Cue Bid", the "Scrambling 3NT" and the "Feit Invite" . Addditionally, SONTI includes chapter on a procedure for responding with long Minor suits that is beneficial even when there is no Overcall. I refer to all of the new bids as "your tools". LEARNING THE NEW TOOLS AND APPLYING THEM WITH LOGIC , ALONG WITH YOUR CURRENT BIDDING KNOWLEDGE, WILL ENABLE YOU TO ENJOY A SIGNIFICANT ADVANTAGE OVER YOUR OPPONENTS. SONTI will be easier to learn than many bridge systems because it focuses primarily on one bid__ the Responder's initial bid directly after the Overcall of partner's 1NT opening bid. When Responder gets that first bid right, most of the continuation is pretty easy since SONTI is logical. To assist in that endeavor, we prioritize the first bid based on the strength and shape of Responder's hand and whether he has a Stopper. The scope of the text is comprehensive and includes bidding after Overcalls at the two and three level as well as after Conventional Overcalls showing one long suit or two-suited hands such as in DONT, Cappelletti , etc. At the conclusion is a "Summary of Feit Responses (first bid of Responder and initial reply by Opener) along with a detailed summary of the "Advantages of SONTI over Lebensohl " A shortened synopsis of this summary follows: The advantages of SONTI over Lebensohl will allow the partnership to: 1. Stop at 2NT when that is the best contract 2. Determine with one bid from Responder and Opener that no Stopper exists 3. Use "Stayman" or Puppet "Stayman" to find a Major suit fit 4. Use "Stolen Bids" 5. Use "Transfers" to all four suits thereby assuring that the contract is "right sided". 6. Show a partial stopper when neither Opener of Responder has a full Stopper 7. Find a playable 4/3 suit contract when there is no Stopper, usually at the 3-level 8. Force to Game or four of a Minor with one low-level bid. 9. Play in a Minor suit part score when that is the best alternative 10. Facilitate the bidding of Game or Slam in a Minor suit, played by Opener 11. Enable Opener to show 5 diamonds, 5 hearts or 5 spades at the 3-level. 12. Enable Responder to show a hand with invitational values, usually at the 2-level 13. Enable Responder to invite Game in a Major suit while simultaneously indicating whether he has a Stopper. 14. Enable Responder to show a hand with five or more cards in both Majors or both Minors 15. Provide a bidding system that is more comprehensive, logical and easier to use than Lebensohl.

Download or read book 2 1 Game Force System written by Neil H. Timm PhD and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2020-10-27 with total page 601 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 2/1 Game Force System is an improvement over the Standard American System that has been in effect and played by bridge players for many years. The advantage of the 2/1 System is that it allows the partnership to know that game is possible with only an initial single bid. This book is about bridge that incorporates conventions that allow partnership’s to reach game or slam. In this regard, I have incorporated modern methods for hand evaluation developed by Marty Bergen called the ADJUST-3 Method and Zar points, new bidding conventions like SARS (Shape Asking Relays after Stayman) and Quest transfers, and an overview of “Bridge Rules and Laws” that I hope will improve your approach to the bidding structure you may use today. Also included is the bidding structure are Bergen, Reverse Bergen, and Combined Bergen major suit raises, inverted minor suit raises with crisscross and flip-flop, cue bidding, modified scroll bids, and many more methods not used in Standard American or Precision. The bidding conventions in the previous editions have been enhanced, corrected, expanded upon, and reorganized with new ones added. Given the release of the new ACBL convention charts, the chapter with the modifications to Fantunes, in my prior edition, is no longer needed. Fantunes may now be played using the Open Convention Chart. The Mid-chart no longer exits. Hence, I have deleted the chapter and replaced it with a new chapter on Bridge Tips, and Agreements. New conventions include a Modern Splinter Bidding Convention, the Zirconia Convention, Unusual 2-level bids, Jump Transfer bids, a new Two-Way Check-back Convention, 1430 Modified Jacoby 2NT*, additional Bridge Rules with more examples, Four-Way Transfers with the range ask bid and more are included in this edition. Also included is an update of the Minorwood and the Roman Keycard Blackwood Conventions, Two-Way New Minor Forcing with modified Wolff Signoff bids and new bidding sequences using Mini/Weak Notrump. The topic of Offense to Defense Ratio (ODR) is included in this revision as well as expanded bidding sequences when opening and responding to the bid of 2 playing the 2/1 Game Force System and many new Bridge Rules have been added to Chapter 10. It can also be modified for use after an opening 2NT, 3NT (strong) or a 1NT overcall. While the convention is named after the person who first wrote about it, Samuel Stayman in 1945, it was actually invented in 1939 by the British bridge player J.C.H. Marx (who published it only in 1946), and apparently independently by Stayman's partner George Rapee in 1945. The main reason for seeking a fit in a major suit is that the success rate for 4 or 4 with 26 HCP is...
