This book was released on 2005-11-24 with total page 648 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Defender of the Peace of Marsilius of Padua is a massively influential text in the history of western political thought. Marsilius offers a detailed analysis and explanation of human political communities, before going on to attack what he sees as the obstacles to peaceful human coexistence - principally the contemporary papacy. Annabel Brett's authoritative rendition of the Defensor Pacis was the first new translation in English for fifty years, and a major contribution to the series of Cambridge Texts: all of the usual series features are provided, included chronology, notes for further reading, and up-to-date annotation aimed at the student reader encountering this classic of medieval thought for the first time. This edition of The Defender of the Peace is a scholarly and a pedagogic event of great importance, of interest to historians, political theorists, theologians and philosophers at all levels from second-year undergraduate upwards.

In this carefully crafted volume, Michael Kort describes the wartime circumstances and thinking that form the context for the decision to use these weapons, surveys the major debates related to that decision, and provides a comprehensive collection of key primary source documents that illuminate the behavior of the United States and Japan during the closing days of World War II. Kort opens with a summary of the debate over Hiroshima as it has evolved since 1945. He then provides a historical overview of thye events in question, beginning with the decision and program to build the atomic bomb. Detailing the sequence of events leading to Japan's surrender, he revisits the decisive battles of the Pacific War and the motivations of American and Japanese leaders. Finally, Kort examines ten key issues in the discussion of Hiroshima and guides readers to relevant primary source documents, scholarly books, and articles.

Book The World of Marsilius of Padua

Download or read book The World of Marsilius of Padua written by Gerson Moreno-Riaño and published by Brepols Publishers. This book was released on 2006 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perhaps no author of the Latin Middle Ages has been the subject of so much controversy and even vitriol than Marsilius of Padua (ca. 1275-1342/43). As author of the notorious heretical tract, the Defensor Pacis, Marsilius became an infamous figure throughout the intellectual and political centres of Europe during his own lifetime. His magnum opus, a sharply pointed dissection of the damage done to earthly political life by the incursions of the papacy and a plea for conciliar ecclesiology, was repeatedly condemned during the fourteenth century and in later years. Yet the treatise continued to be disseminated and received translation into several vernacular languages. During the Reformation, Marsilius and his Defensor Pacis enjoyed another round of acclamation and denunciation, depending upon one's confession. In July 2003, a group comprising many of the world's most renowned scholars of medieval political thought gathered for a 'Marsilius of Padua World Congress', held in conjunction with the tenth International Medieval Congress held in July 2003 in Leeds. The present volume contains selected papers originally prepared for that meeting. The contents represent a compendium of innovative scholarly contributions to the understanding of Marsilius, his life and times, and his lasting impact on Western thought. Included are chapters that reflect a range of recent, ground-breaking research by both senior scholars and the future leaders in the field. After a general survey of the current state of scholarship on Marsilius, the volume divides into three thematically organized sections, covering a variety of historical, textual, methodological, theological, and theoretical questions. In all of the essays, readers will discover the wealth and complexity of Marsilius's thought as well as the startling range of approaches and methods of interpretation taken in the study of his work. The volume's selection of authors is international in scope and represents the first interdisciplinary scholarly collaboration in the field of Marsilian studies to occur in the twenty-first century.

If all persons of this sort are to be exempted from the jurisdiction of civil rulers, with immunity also from public burdens, it seems a very obvious danger that the greater part of mankind may slip into these orders. If this should happen the coercive jurisdiction of rulers would be left without effect, a grave evil and corruption of the republic. "For whoever enjoys the honors and advantages of a civil community, as, for example, the peace and protection of the human Lawgiver, should not be exempted from its burdens and its juris i diction without the action of the Lawgiver itself. "To avoid this we must admit, in accordance with the Truth, that the ruler has jurisdiction over all bishops or presbyters and clergymen by authority of the Lawgiver Jm order that the republic may not go to pieces through undue multiplicity of powers. J The ruler ought further to assign a certain number of clergymen to each district subject to him, as also of every other class of citizens, lest through their undue increase they come to resist the coercive power of the ruler or otherwise to disturb the peace of the realm and impede the community or the kingdom in carrying out its necessary activities." In the effective sense of the word "judge," there is but one who can give final judgment as to transgressions of the divine law, that is Christ and no other. In this world there is no ( judge who can exercise coercive jurisdiction for such offences, he priest is, so far as this world is concerned, only a "doctor," or expert. His business is to teach, to exhort, to convince by...

Book Marsilius of Padua and the Truth of History

Download or read book Marsilius of Padua and the Truth of History written by George Garnett and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2006-06-29 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marsilius of Padua is conventionally seen as a thinker ahead of his time: the first secular political theorist, and the first post-classical thinker to espouse republicanism. He is presented as a scholastic precursor of the republican humanists of the Renaissance. Starting with an examination of the neglected evidence for Marsilius's life, and the contemporary response to his best-known work, the Defensor Pacis, this new study argues that such an interpretation is quite wrong. It shows that Marsilius was not a republican, but an imperialist; and that far from being a secular political theorist, his great work Defensor Pacis is underpinned by a profound Christian understanding of history as a providentially ordained process.
