Book excerpt: This book identifies the critical factors that shaped and influenced New Zealand's defence acquisition decision-making processes from the election of the Fourth Labour Government in 1984 and the subsequent ANZUS crisis, through to the 11 September 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States and the following 'war on terror'. Book New Zealand And The World Past Present And Future

Download or read book New Zealand And The World Past Present And Future written by Robert G Patman and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2017-12-28 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to provide the reader with an overview of New Zealand's international relations. It is a country that has often shown an international presence that is out of proportion to the modest spectrum of national economic, military and diplomatic capabilities at its disposal. In this volume, the editors have called upon a range of specialists representing a range of views drawn from the worlds of academia, policy-making, and civil society. It is an attempt to present a rounded picture of New Zealand's place in the world, one that does not rely exclusively on any particular perspective. The book does not claim to be exhaustive. But it does seek to present a more wide-ranging treatment of New Zealand's foreign relations than has generally been the case in the past.Five broad themes help shape and organize the contributions to the text:

Book Defence Planning and Uncertainty

Download or read book Defence Planning and Uncertainty written by Stephan Frühling and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-24 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can countries decide what kind of military forces they need, if threats are uncertain and history is full of strategic surprises? This is a question that is more pertinent than ever, as countries across the Asia-Pacific are faced with the military and economic rise of China. Uncertainty is inherent in defence planning, but different types of uncertainty mean that countries need to approach decisions about military force structure in different ways. This book examines four different basic frameworks for defence planning, and demonstrates how states can make decisions coherently about the structure and posture of their defence forces despite strategic uncertainty. It draws on case studies from the United States, Australian and New Zealand, each of which developed key concepts for their particular circumstances and risk perception in Asia. Success as well as failure in developing coherent defence planning frameworks holds lessons for the United States and other countries as they consider how best to structure their military forces for the uncertain challenges of the future.

Book Prudence Pragmatism And Principle New Zealand s Security In The 21st Century

Download or read book Prudence Pragmatism And Principle New Zealand s Security In The 21st Century written by Jim Rolfe and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2024-07-23 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prudence, Pragmatism and Principle examines New Zealand's approach to national security by taking the country's own definition of security and examining each of the components within that definition to determine what the country has or has not done to achieve security. The book highlights the centralised all-of-government approach to achieving security policy and its more distributed and focused approach to responding to national security issues. It also evaluates the degree to which the country chooses to follow a path of prudence, pragmatism or principle in achieving its security. The emphasis on each of those is different according to the issue. The author first presents the development of New Zealand's thinking about security issues and the structure of the national security system. He then delves into case studies of security concern including the national demand for security, international disorder, New Zealand's immediate region and its security, disruptions in the domestic sphere, and natural hazards as a security issue. The final substantive chapter examines how New Zealand works to achieve its security goal of the freedom of citizens 'to make the most of opportunities to advance their way of life'; an unusual national security goal and one that is difficult to achieve or even to define.

Book Zones of Amity Zones of Enmity

Download or read book Zones of Amity Zones of Enmity written by James Sperling and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-11-15 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume addresses the problem of military and economic cooperation in the Asia-Pacific, particularly the impact of the end of the Cold War, on the evolution of its four regional subsystems (Australasia, Southern Asia, Southeast Asia, and Northeast Asia), the level of institutionalization in its economic and military dimensions, and the tendency towards regional amity or regional enmity. It investigates the regional institutions of military and economic security organizing the interstate relations of the Asia-Pacific; assesses the military and economic ambitions of China, Japan, and the United States; and suggests that the 'clash of civilizations' thesis is of limited use in understanding the dynamics of interstate relations in this centrally important area of the world. Contributors are Shigekio N. Fukai, Haruhiro Fukui, Norman A. Graham, Steven A. Hoffmann, Jim Rolfe, Sheldon Simon, James Sperling, and Robert M. Uriu.

    Book Details:
  • Author : Robin Higham
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing USA
  • Release : 2003-12-30
  • ISBN : 0313017204
  • Pages : 493 pages

Download or read book Researching World War I written by Robin Higham and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2003-12-30 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: World War I was the greatest cataclysm Europe had ever known, directly involving 61 million troops from 16 nations. Yet the history of the war and the reasons it started and spread so rapidly were vastly more complex than the players realized. Written by highly respected authorities, this book discusses the literature on all aspects of the war, making it an excellent starting point for anyone seeking guidance to the immense, and often daunting, body of World War I literature. The struggle mobilized manpower from home, troops from the colonies abroad, and—in most countries-women as well as men. Governments increasingly intervened in everyday life. New weapons and organizational structures were developed. Yet the history of the war and the reasons it started and spread so rapidly were vastly more complex than the players realized. Written by highly respected authorities, this book discusses the literature on all aspects of the war. Dennis Showalter's opening chapter covers the controversial issue of the war's origins—a complex subject that has been much debated by historians. Ensuing chapters consider the literature on each of the participating countries. The broader subjects of the war at sea and the war in the air are also covered. Daniel Beaver's final chapter discusses the mobilization of industry and the new military technology. This book is an excellent starting point for anyone seeking guidance to the immense, and often daunting, body of World War I literature.
