Book The Defence and Fall of Singapore

Download or read book The Defence and Fall of Singapore written by Brian Farrell and published by Monsoon Books. This book was released on 2017-01-01 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shortly after midnight on 8 December 1941, two divisions of crack troops of the Imperial Japanese Army began a seaborne invasion of southern Thailand and northern Malaya. Their assault developed into a full-blown advance towards Singapore, the main defensive position of the British Empire in the Far East. The defending British, Indian, Australian and Malayan forces were outmanoeuvred on the ground, overwhelmed in the air and scattered on the sea. By the end of January 1942, British Empire forces were driven back onto the island of Singapore Itself, cut off from further outside help. When the Japanese stormed the island with an an-out assault, the defenders were quickly pushed back into a corner from which there was no escape. Singapore’s defenders finally capitulated on 15 February, to prevent the wholesale pillage of the city itself. Their rapid and total defeat was nothing less than military humiliation and political disaster. Based on the most extensive use yet of primary documents in Britain, Japan, Australia and Singapore, Brian Farrell provides the fullest picture of how and why Singapore fell and its real significance to the outcome of the Second World War.

Book The Five Power Agreement for the Defense of Malaysia Singapore Opportunity Or Obligation for the US

Download or read book The Five Power Agreement for the Defense of Malaysia Singapore Opportunity Or Obligation for the US written by Richard H. Sugg and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: US interests in a new regional collective security arrangement are considered by examining its background and the chronology of its evolution, and by examining the interests and attitudes of the five participating countries. The attitudes of neighboring countries and the major powers towards the Agreement are important to the US position. Information was gathered mainly through literature search, but was supplemented by the author's presence in Australia during the time when the subject was topical in public speeches and in news media comments. Several of the Five Powers belong to other regional organizations which are oriented toward cooperation in economic and cultural activities, but all such organizations are encouraged by the Nixon Doctrine. Because the US is a declared Pacific power and has ANZUS and SEATO military allies in the Agreement, it has obligations to the Agreement members, but its obligations are limited because of the consultative nature of the Agreement. The US should support the Five Power Agreement as one alternative to a Soviet-inspired Southeast Asia Collective Security System, and because the Agreement is a solid example of what the Nixon Doctrine seeks. Book The Defence Capabilities of Small States

Download or read book The Defence Capabilities of Small States written by Shang-su Wu and published by Springer. This book was released on 2020-01-01 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comparison of Singapore and Taiwan presents an interesting case study for those wishing to understand how small states struggle to overcome their strategic disadvantage. Since their independence, Singapore and Taiwan have faced numerous challenges resulting from their relative strategic disadvantage. They have struggled to overcome vulnerable bases, an unformed conception of state, and weak governmental institutes for defence. While territorial borders are difficult to change, both states have focused on nation building, economic growth, and military build-up in order to overcome their predicaments. During the Cold War, both states employed similarly authoritarian policies to preserve their survival. However, in the post-Cold War era, Taiwan has experienced political and economic weakness in the face of the rising China, while Singapore, with its polity of one-party domination, has continued to strengthen its hard and soft power. This book examines the unique context for each case, drawing comparisons and offering analysis of their distinct approaches.

Book Malaysia Singapore Fifty Years of Contentions 1965 2015

This book was released on 2015-01-21 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers an interesting and informative account of the often fractious account of two countries in the heart of Southeast Asia. It outlines the primary issues that plagued relations between Malaysia and Singapore in the last fifty years and the political, diplomatic and legal initiatives taken to address them. The author gives a first-person narrative of the seemingly endless behind-the-scenes episodes that have brought the love-hate relationship to where they are today. He further delves into the vast reservoir of information on the rocky bilateral relationship to provide a reasonable argument over why Malaysia has behaved as it has since 1965. Exhaustive records of, among others, minutes, letters and documents are brought to light to substantiate the Malaysian view in relation to issues of contention with Singapore. Coming from an insider with more than four eventful decades in the Malaysian Foreign Service, it will be an eye opener for many.
