Book Proceedings of the Central Asian Society

Download or read book Proceedings of the Central Asian Society written by Edwin Collen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-10 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the Central Asian Society: The Defence of India Many years ago, at Simla, a lecture was announced by General Sir George Chesney, on The Invasion of India.' I need hardly say that we gathered in great strength to listen to a thrilling exposition of this exciting subject, and were somewhat dejected when we found that the address certainly dealt with the invasion of India, only it was the invasion by Alexander the Great. Now I will not treat you so badly as we thought that Sir George Chesney had treated us - though it was, in truth, a most admirable lecture - but I must warn you that my paper is simply based upon the idea that it is well for this Society, and indeed for the British nation generally, to take stock now and then of a great question such as that on which I am about to address you and I am well aware that there are many among my audience who are masters of the subject, and that my only qualifications are a long connection with it and some acquaintance with part of the regions round which our interest centres. When we speak of the defence of India, we usually mean its safeguarding from an enemy advancing from the north or the west upon some portion or portions of our north-west Frontier line. In its wider meaning, the term would embrace the defence of other portions of the Indian Empire - as, for example, the south-eastern Frontier and Burma, the internal security of India. Book The Armies of India Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Armies of India Classic Reprint written by George Fletcher Macmunn and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-14 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Armies of India And the marvel Of it all is that these tramping disciplined legions are not the beef and porridge and potato-reared lads of the Isles, but for the most part men Of the ancient races Of Hindustan, ruled and trained and led after the manner Of the English. From the doorkeepers and trained bands that first guarded the factories of the early merchants, the army of John Company Bahadur grew and prospered, by the secret of ever-increasing scope and labour, till it became the great shako-clad army Of the Line that vanished for the most part in the tragedy of '57. Of the three great presidential armies, the larger part, that Of Bengal, and part Of that Of Bombay, disappeared, and with it the glorious record of successful war and faithful service, in a storm Of unreasoned and uncalled-for mutiny, that buried in a month the tradition Of a century. The army that now upholds the Empire Of Hindustan, is based on a systematic grouping Of men by race and sept and clan, with a View to the full development Of race efficiency. Book Colonization Defence and Railways in Our Indian Empire Classic Reprint

Download or read book Colonization Defence and Railways in Our Indian Empire Classic Reprint written by Hyde Clarke and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Colonization, Defence, and Railways in Our Indian Empire In all this which has been done for India in a century, it will strike the dispassionate observer to see how little has been done for England, beyond endowing her with the political possession of the country. That possession brings no virtual acces sion to the imperial revenue: it affords to a few individual citizens some noble prizes of ambition; it affords employment to a limited number of civilians and officers; but it feeds our wealth only through its commercial development, as the United States and South America do. For the bulk of the population, for the extension of the English name and race, the empire of India has done nothing; while the wastes of Canada, Australia, and South Africa have been filled with our people, a few hundreds of our citizens alone represent us in the rich up-country of the presidencies. In the presidential cities alone have we any considerable English population, and even there we have not taken permanent root, for the Eurasian population is inconsiderable. Book Lives of Indian Officers Vol 1 of 2

Download or read book Lives of Indian Officers Vol 1 of 2 written by John William Kaye and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lives of Indian Officers, Vol. 1 of 2: Illustrative of the History of the Civil and Military Service of India I think that something should be said regarding the circumstances, which have resulted in the publication of this book. Two or three years ago, I was invited by the editor and by the proprietor of Good Words to write a series of biographical papers illustrative of the careers of some of our most distinguished "Indian Heroes." As the materials, in most instances, were not to be obtained from printed books or papers, to perform this task in a satisfactory manner - that is, to write month after month, throughout the year, a memoir of some soldier or statesman distinguished in Indian history - would have been impossible to one, the greater part of whoso time was devoted to other duties, if it had not chanced that for many years I had been gathering, from different original sources, information relating both to the public sendees and the private lives of many of those whose careers it was desired that I should illustrate. I had many large manuscript volumes, the growth of past years of historical research, full of personal correspondence and biographical notes, and I had extensive collections of original papers, equally serviceable, which had not been transcribed.
