Download or read book Reclaiming and Redefining American Exhibitions of Russian Art written by Roann Barris and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-08-23 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the history of American exhibitions of Russian art in the twentieth century in the context of the Cold War. Because this history reflects changes in museological theory and the role of governments in facilitating or preventing intercultural cooperation, it uncovers a story that is far more complex than a chronological listing of exhibition names and art works. Roann Barris considers questions of stylistic appropriations and influences and the role of museum exhibitions in promoting international and artistic exchanges. Barris reveals that Soviet and American exchanges in the world of art were extensive and persistent despite political disagreements before, during, and after the Cold War. It also reveals that these early exhibitions communicated contradictory and historically invalid pictures of the Russian or Soviet avant-garde. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, museum studies, and Russian studies.

Download or read book The Mir Iskusstva Group and Russian Art 1898 1912 written by Janet Kennedy and published by Garland Publishing. This book was released on 1977 with total page 698 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost since its inception the Russian art journal "Mir iskusstva" ("The World of art") has been recognized as the symbolic opening fo a new period in Russian art. The journal was published in St. Petersburg from the end of 1898 through 1904. It was the work of a small group of friends, some of them artists and some dilettantes of the arts. Among the artists who took an active part in the publication of "Mir iskusstva" were Alexandre Benois, Konstantin Somov, Evgenii Lansere, Leon Bakst, Mstislav Dobuzhinskii, and Igor Grabar. Other personalities, equally important in the founding and production of "Mir iskusstva", were Sergei Diaghilev, Dmitrii Filosofov, Alfred Nourok, and Walter Nouvel--each of whom had a special interest in some area of art, music, literature, or the theater.--Introduction.
