Book The Decline and Rise of the Consumer

Download or read book The Decline and Rise of the Consumer written by Horace M. Kallen and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Decline and Rise of the Consumer: A Philosophy of Consumer Cooperation Shortly after I published A Free Society, the Editor of the Christian Century, Mr. Charles Clayton Morrison, invited me to discuss consumer cooperation in that bravest and most forthright of religious periodicals. "What is needed," he wrote, "is that consumer collectivism should get itself stated in terms of a fundamental philosophy. . . Your distinction between consumer and producer, which derives from the fact that consumption is a natural function involving values and ends, whereas production is an acquired function derived from necessity . . . together with your proposal to organize this consumption function into the structure of the social order . . . will come nearer to satisfying the religious mind, which is seeking social expression, than the orthodox socialistic conception." Out of the articles composed for the Christian Century grew this survey of the principles and practice of consumer cooperation and exposition of the philosophy of life which underlies them, nurtured by the interest of Mr. Morrison and the urging of Mr. E. R. Bowen, Secretary of the Cooperative League of the United States of America. Fundamentally, the philosophy is as simple and obvious as Columbus' egg, and as surprising. Its point of departure is the fact that first and last human beings arc not employers and employees, capitalists and laborers, carpenters or clerks or undertakers or farmers or physicians or miners or machinists, but human beings, simply living men of flesh and blood. As living men of flesh and blood we are organic individuals; we are persons. In our feeling of ourselves, in our living, we do not split off into vocations or professions. We do not define ourselves by special functions or by this or that separate and distinct set of social or institutional relationships, each tending to overrule and exclude the others. Download or read book The decline and rise of the consumer a philosophy of consumer cooperation written by Horace Meyer Kallen and published by . This book was released on 2012-05 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ""The Decline and Rise of the Consumer: A Philosophy of Consumer Cooperation"" by Horace Meyer Kallen is a philosophical exploration of the role of the consumer in society. Kallen argues that the consumer is a vital force in the economy and that the decline of the consumer has led to a decline in overall economic health. He proposes a philosophy of consumer cooperation, in which consumers work together to create a more equitable and sustainable economy. Kallen examines the history of consumerism and the ways in which it has been co-opted by corporations and governments. He also explores the potential for consumer activism and the ways in which consumers can use their power to effect change. This book is a thought-provoking and insightful analysis of the role of the consumer in modern society and offers a new perspective on how we can work together to create a more just and sustainable world. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Book The International Co operative Alliance and the consumer co operative movement in northern Europe c 1860 1939

Download or read book The International Co operative Alliance and the consumer co operative movement in northern Europe c 1860 1939 written by Mary Hilson and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2018-04-10 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book examines the history of co-operation in the broad context of the history of consumerism and consumption; of internationalism and the development of international organisations; and debates about international trade during the inter-war period. The fundamental question explored in the book concerns the meaning of co-operation. Was it a social movement or an economic enterprise? Did it aspire to challenge capitalism or to reform it? Did it contain at its heart a political vision for the transformation of society or was it simply a practical guide for organising a business? Hilson argues that it was both, but that an examination of the debates over the different meanings of co-operation can also illuminate broader questions about the emergence of consumer interests in the first half of the twentieth century, especially in a transnational context.

Book Historical Dictionary of the Cooperative Movement

Download or read book Historical Dictionary of the Cooperative Movement written by Jack Shaffer and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 1999-08-31 with total page 646 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cooperatives are found everywhere, doing all kinds of things. They are critical elements in the economies of a large number of countries around the world, large and small. Their affairs are carried out by elected leadership that runs the gamut from the illiterate to the scholarly. Their membership is made up of people of all socio-economic backgrounds. It is those members who, through their support and their needs, determine the successes and failures of cooperatives. But cooperatives as a popular movement will also be judged in other ways. A judgment will be made on the totality of their impact: local, national, and international. People will ask about how they helped ameliorate the economic and social problems of the dispossessed. But they will also inquire about their influence on economic systems, whether these were made more humane, egalitarian, and inclusive in their benefits because of cooperative principles and practices. Their impact on the international order will be judged collectively by how they contributed more than resolutions to peace, to justice, and to human inclusiveness. This volume provides snapshot views of the cooperative movement in all its diversity. The only single source one can consult to find so much information on the different kinds of cooperatives, significant figures, including philosophers, pioneers, officials, and leaders, and the situation in a large number of countries. With a list of acronyms, an extensive chronology, appendixes, and a comprehensive bibliography.
