Book excerpt: "This is a delight." —Publishers Weekly This arrangement is either exactly what they need--or a total disaster Oscar is a grouch. That’s a well-established fact among his tight-knit friend group, and they love him anyway. Jack is an ass. Jack, who’s always ready with a sly insult, who can’t have a conversation without arguing, and who Oscar may or may not have hooked up with on a strict no-commitment, one-time-only basis. Even if it was extremely hot. Together, they’re a bickering, combative mess. When Oscar is fired (answering phones is not for the anxiety-ridden), he somehow ends up working for Jack. Maybe while cleaning out Jack’s grandmother’s house they can stop fighting long enough to turn a one-night stand into a frenemies-with-benefits situation. The house is an archaeological dig of love and dysfunction, and while Oscar thought he was prepared, he wasn’t. It’s impossible to delve so deeply into someone’s past without coming to understand them at least a little, but Oscar has boundaries for a reason—even if sometimes Jack makes him want to break them all down. After all, hating Jack is less of a risk than loving him… Carina Adores is home to romantic love stories where LGBTQ+ characters find their happily-ever-afters. However, her latest Sydney-based project, a vision of reconciliation between two cultures, attracts the ire of a young skinhead and her work is completely ruined. Traumatized by the incident, she loses her sight in one eye. Several failed attempts to re-attach her retina leave her feeling hopeless and dejected, so she decides to return home to Alaska, to learn to live again. In her childhood holiday home on Halibut Cove, Rayne witnesses the murder of the second mate of the Petro Valdez, just as the world commemorates the third anniversary of one of its most severe environmental catastrophes. When Rayne identifies the killer as eco-friendly real estate magnate, Liam Declan, her otherwise unusually detailed eyewitness account is dismissed outright by the police and the case makes headlines. Bent on saving her compromised reputation, Rayne's investigation leads her to the discovery of Alaska's richest goldmines on the very same shoreline wrecked by the notorious oil spill. The elaborate cover up includes not only state officials, the former crew of the Petro Valdez, oil barons and mining tycoons, but unwittingly, her very own father. Brought face to face with the harsh realities of the corporate world, will Rayne trade the love of her father for her thirst for the truth?

Download or read book Memory Ireland written by Oona Frawley and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 2012-03-29 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the second volume of a series that will ultimately include four, the authors consider Irish diasporic memory and memory practices. While the Irish diaspora has become the subject of a wide range of scholarship, there has been little work focused on its relationship to memory. The first half of the volume asks how diasporic memory functions in different places and times, and what forms it takes on. As an island nation with a history of emigration, Ireland has developed a rich diasporic cultural memory, one that draws on multiple traditions and historiographies of both "home" and "away." Native traditions are not imported wholesale, but instead develop their own curious hybridity, reflecting the nature of emigrant memory that absorbs new ways of thinking about home. How do immigrants remember their homeland? How do descendants of immigrants "remember" a land they rarely visit? How does diasporic memory pass through families, and how is it represented in cultural forms such as literature, festivals, and souvenirs? In its second half, this volume shifts its attention to the concept of "memory practices," ways of cultural remembering that result from and are shaped by particular cultural forms. Many of these cultural forms embody memory materially through language, music, and photography and, because of their distinctive expressions of culture, give rise to distinctive memory practices. Gathering the leading voices in Irish studies, this volume opens new pathways into the body of Irish cultural memory, demonstrating time and again the ways in which memory is supported by the negotiations of individuals within wider cultural contexts. Contributors include: Aidan Arrowsmith, Hasia Diner, Joep Leerssen, Paul Muldoon, Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill
