Book The 1990s A Decade of Contemporary British Fiction

Download or read book The 1990s A Decade of Contemporary British Fiction written by Nick Hubble and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-05-21 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did social, cultural and political events in Britain during the 1990s shape contemporary British Fiction? From the fall of the Berlin Wall to the turn of the millennium, the 1990s witnessed a realignment of global politics. Against the changing international scene, this volume uses events abroad and in Britain to examine and explain the changes taking place in British fiction, including: the celebration of national identities, fuelled by the move toward political devolution in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales; the literary optimism in urban ethnic fictions written by a new generation of authors, born and raised in Britain; the popularity of neo-Victorian fiction. Critical surveys are balanced by in-depth readings of work by the authors who defined the decade, including A.S. Byatt, Hanif Kureishi, Will Self, Caryl Phillips and Irvine Welsh: an approach that illustrates exactly how their key themes and concerns fit within the social and political circumstances of the decade.

The gender roles we each carry out are highly individualistic, built on our biological and physical traits, appearance and personality, life experiences such as childhood, career and education, and history of sexual and romantic interactions. Each element influences perceptions and expectations. Book Two Decades of Market Reform in India

Download or read book Two Decades of Market Reform in India written by Sudipta Bhattacharyya and published by Anthem Press. This book was released on 2013-12-15 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have neoliberal policies truly yielded beneficial effects for India? ‘Two Decades of Market Reform in India’ presents a collection of essays that challenge the conventional wisdom of Indian market reforms, examining the effects of neoliberal policies enacted by the Indian government and exploding the myths that surround them. In particular, the volume questions the perceived benefits of India’s reform policies in the areas of growth, agriculture, industry and poverty alleviation, and examines how the government’s focus on preventing a fiscal deficit caused a large-scale decline in development expenditures, which in turn has had a negative impact on the well-being of the poor. With its rich and insightful analysis, ‘Two Decades of Market Reform in India’ bravely shines a light on the true implications of India’s neoliberal governmental policies, and provides a revealing indication of how policy reform since 1991 has, at times, detrimentally affected the general populace of India.

Book The Public Company Transformed

    Book Details:
  • Author : Brian Cheffins
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2018-09-28
  • ISBN : 0190640340
  • Pages : 400 pages

Download or read book The Public Company Transformed written by Brian Cheffins and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-09-28 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For decades, the public company has played a dominant role in the American economy. Since the middle of the 20th century, the nature of the public company has changed considerably. The transformation has been a fascinating one, marked by scandals, political controversy, wide swings in investor and public sentiment, mismanagement, entrepreneurial verve, noisy corporate "raiders" and various other larger-than-life personalities. Nevertheless, amidst a voluminous literature on corporations, a systematic historical analysis of the changes that have occurred is lacking. The Public Company Transformed correspondingly analyzes how the public company has been recast from the mid-20th century through to the present day, with particular emphasis on senior corporate executives and the constraints affecting the choices available to them. The chronological point of departure is the managerial capitalism era, which prevailed in large American corporations following World War II. The book explores managerial capitalism's rise, its 1950s and 1960s heyday, and its fall in the 1970s and 1980s. It describes the American public companies and executives that enjoyed prosperity during the 1990s, and the reversal of fortunes in the 2000s precipitated by corporate scandals and the financial crisis of 2008. The book also considers the regulation of public companies in detail, and discusses developments in shareholder activism, company boards, chief executives, and concerns about oligopoly. The volume concludes by offering conjectures on the future of the public corporation, and suggests that predictions of the demise of the public company have been exaggerated.

Book Post Soviet Russia in the adventurous 1990 s the Wild Decade

Download or read book Post Soviet Russia in the adventurous 1990 s the Wild Decade written by Derrick Widmer and published by novum pro Verlag. This book was released on 2019-07-24 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Derrick Widmer together with his assistant travelled to Moscow 15 months after the downfall of the Soviet Union in December 1991 at the invitation of the Russian Alfa Investment Fond. The political and economic climate is shattered, the population impoverished and in transition: The dramatic liberalization of prizes and the privatization of the state-owned enterprises was perceived as a shock-therapy. This was done via auctions where vouchers were being changed into shares. The vouchers were given for free to the population, whereby the former Red Directors received much more vouchers than normal citizens which eventually led to the rise of the oligarchs. In the 1990's Russia went through an enormous economic, social and political transition. For fearless Businessmen ("Bisnessmeni") to make a bonanza required good relations with powerful politicians, members of the secret service and contacts with organized crime. A package of shares had sometimes more value than human lives. The country verged on anarchy and collapse. Laws were meaningless, might made right and wealth walked hand in hand with death. Derrick Widmer experienced these wild years of the Post-Soviet Russia as a contemporary witness. In his book he gives fascinating insights in encounters with famous politicians, oligarchs, bankers and lawyers. He perceived Russia after the cold war no more as enemy but as friend and based on his experience he developed a better understanding for the large complex country, Russian thinking and the Russian soul.

This book was released on 2008-04-15 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is set against the background of the 'justice gap' in sexual assault cases - the dramatic gap between the number of offences recorded by the police and the number of convictions. It seeks to examine the attitudinal problems which bedevil this area of law and possible strategies for addressing them. Written by a professor of law and a professor of psychology, it reviews evidence from socio-legal and social cognition research and presents new data drawn both from interviews with judges and barristers and from studies with prospective lawyers and members of the public. In the final part, it considers different ways in which rape trials could be improved and suggests steps that could be taken to change public attitudes about sexual assault.
