Book Escaping the Khmer Rouge

Download or read book Escaping the Khmer Rouge written by Chileng Pa and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2017-02-10 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Khmer Rouge ruled Cambodia for three years, eight months and twenty days. After overthrowing Lon Nol in April 1975 and establishing a so-called Democratic Kampuchea, the Communist-sponsored government was responsible for the deaths of as many as two million people, almost one-third of the country's population. Here, Chileng Pa vividly recalls life under the Cambodian Communists. Attempting to conceal his identity as a policeman for the previous government, Chileng changed his name and moved his family to the village of Prayap, near the Vietnamese border. In April of 1977, after two years of starvation and cruelty at the hands of the Khmer Rouge, Chileng was forced to watch as Communist guerillas brutally murdered his wife and two-year-old son. With nothing left for him in Prayap Chileng fled to Vietnam, but eventually returned to Cambodia as part of a Vietnamese invasion force that would end the bloody reign of the Khmer regime. In 1981 Chileng and his new family found their way to America. His "simple strand of remembrance" serves to honor all those who died at the hands of the Khmer Rouge.

Book excerpt: Finally, this dissertation attempts to contribute to discussions about the methodology for studying religious practice. This is done primarily through attention to the relationship between the imagination of ritual action and actions taken in other ritual or non-ritual contexts. This focus demonstrates how these relationships of anaclisis contribute to the durability and social efficacy of ritual action.

Book excerpt: From the internationally acclaimed director of S-21: The Khmer Rouge Killing Machine, a survivor’s autobiography that confronts the evils of the Khmer Rouge dictatorship. Rithy Panh was only thirteen years old when the Khmer Rouge expelled his family from Phnom Penh in 1975. In the months and years that followed, his entire family was executed, starved, or worked to death. Thirty years later, after having become a respected filmmaker, Rithy Panh decides to question one of the men principally responsible for the genocide, Comrade Duch, who’s neither an ordinary person nor a demon—he’s an educated organizer, a slaughterer who talks, forgets, lies, explains, and works on his legacy. This confrontation unfolds into an exceptional narrative of human history and an examination of the nature of evil. The Elimination stands among the essential works that document the immense tragedies of the twentieth century, with Primo Levi’s If This Is a Man and Elie Wiesel’s Night.

Book Khmer Legends Part III

Download or read book Khmer Legends Part III written by Dẻmaz Baker and published by Outskirts Press. This book was released on 2022-11-09 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Khmer Legends Part III is Dẻmaz’s new collection of Cambodian folktales, one of which is the famous story of A-Lẻv. The narrative is about a boy born of poor and uneducated parents. At the age of seven, A-Lẻv already understood the meaning of being deprived of even the basic necessities of survival. He wanted to make a difference, not only for his parents but also for himself. From a teenager to an adult, his shrewd brain concocted mischievous, hilarious schemes to cheat people out of their belongings or to gain money so his parents could survive. He created trials and tribulations in doing so just to amuse himself. As years went by, he had a firm desire to educate himself by beginning to learn to read and write in order to deal with a high society that flaunted its wealth and status upon the poor and less fortunate. In the end, his humility and humbleness gained him more respect in the society that rejected him because of his low economic status.

Book The Garland Handbook of Southeast Asian Music

Download or read book The Garland Handbook of Southeast Asian Music written by Terry Miller and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2011-03-17 with total page 517 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Garland Handbook of Southeast Asian Music is comprised of essays from The Garland Encyclopedia of World Music: Volume 4, Southeast Asia (1998). Largely revised and updated, the essays offer detailed, regional studies of the different musical cultures of Southeast Asia and examine the ways in which music helps to define the identity of this particular area. Part one provides an in-depth introduction to the area of Southeast Asia and explores a series of issues and processes, such as colonialism, mass media, spirituality, and war. The articles in this section are important in gaining historical, political, and social perspective. Part two focuses on mainland Southeast Asia, with essays representing Cambodia, Thailand, Laos, Burma, Peninsular Malaysia, Vietnam, Singapore, and the minority peoples of mainland Southeast Asia. Part three focuses on island Southeast Asia, dividing the area into three sections: Indonesia, the Philippines, and Borneo. In addition to offering a detailed study of the music of each area, it also offers recent perspectives on the gamelan and theater traditions of Indonesia. Questions for Critical Thinking at the end of each major section guide and focus attention on what issues – musical and cultural – arise when one studies the music of Southeast Asia – issues that might not occur in the study of other musics of the world. An accompanying compact disc offers musical examples from Southeast Asia.
