Book The Death That Strangled the Heart of Africa

Download or read book The Death That Strangled the Heart of Africa written by Janvier Tchouteu and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2017-12-10 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thoughtful account of Patrice Lumumba finds that the swift elimination of the legend from the geopolitical developments involving his country plunged Congo into a turmoil that it is yet to recover from.Janvier T. Chando gives shape to Congo's deep trauma as the private possession of King Leopold of Belgium, later as a Belgian colony and afterwards as a so-called independent state wretched by a tug-of-war between the cold war rivals. That resulted in the inhuman dictatorship of pro-Western Mobutu Sese Seko, in wars during which millions of Congolese died, in the impoverishment of the people, in the rape of the country by foreign interests, and in the country's loss of the sense of direction it had under the leadership of Patrice Lumumba. The author draws from historical records, other scholarly accounts, and on contemporary research in coming up with an analyst of the case for Congo. And he does so in an unequivocal manner.

Book Murder Witchcraft and the Killing of Wildlife

Download or read book Murder Witchcraft and the Killing of Wildlife written by Stephen Rabey Matthews and published by Pen and Sword True Crime. This book was released on 2020-02-19 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This was the time of the Belgian Congo debacle where ethnic cleansing coincided with Steve's first police posting near the Northern Rhodesia border with the Congo, at the age of 21. He graphically describes being knifed, ambushed, stoned, wounded by bow and arrow and shotgun and had his hand broken several times. He saved the life of President Kaunda from a potential assassination attempt and acted as a driver and bodyguard to President Tsombe of the breakaway state of Katanga. Steve was solely responsible for exposing and tracking down a dangerous British Army deserter and communist spy working in the Congo and Northern Rhodesia (Zambia), seeing him neutralised and his operation disbanded. Throughout the book, he gives full credit to his African police colleagues for their immense courage, humour, loyalty and total dedication. The book will standout because it depicts unique, true stories of dealing with witchcraft murders and cannibalism in all its repugnant forms. Steve, personally thwarted an ambush on a group of famous Congo mercenaries known as the Wild Geese. He describes incidents of black magic, kidnapping, arson, gunrunning and people trafficking. He successfully detected the first computer fraud in the territory, and later for the first time, brought back a European fugitive in a series of fraud cases to face justice, from the atrocious apartheid country of South Africa; of being given a government award for his part in combatting the slaughter of wildlife and in taking part in the search for the downed aircraft of the United Nations Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjöld – still the subject of much controversy today. Steve's life was saved several times by his courageous Doberman, Alex regarded as a witch doctor by local tribes. This is the true, action-packed, unadulterated stories of those frantic and dangerous years, where a young police inspector found himself confronted by fearsome actions and events well beyond his complete understanding while serving in the elite police force in Northern Rhodesia now Zambia, which was then a British Protectorate prior to independence. Steve has strived not to duplicate any of these true stories, which provides an indication of just how involved and energises his dedicated years of service really were. Nevertheless, he pushed on regardless, with the realisation that he was doing an important and necessary job for the benefit of the unprivileged peoples of the country; yet the police were fighting on two fronts, trying to protect the vulnerable citizens and at the same time endeavouring to stop the slaughter of the country's wildlife.

Book The Killer Trail

Download or read book The Killer Trail written by Bertrand Taithe and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2009-10-22 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Killer Trail tells the tale of one of the most notorious atrocities to take place during the European 'scramble for Africa', a real life story of insane violence in the heart of an exotic continent that eerily prefigures fictional accounts such as The Heart of Darkness and Apocalypse Now. The Voulet-Chanoine mission left Dakar in 1898 for the centre of Africa and the region of Lake Chad with the aim of establishing effective borders between the French and British empires while 'pacifying' a notoriously belligerent region. Wreaking havoc as it went along, the mission degenerated into an extraordinary display of colonial violence and cruelty, leaving a trail of pillage, murder, and enslavement of the local inhabitants in its wake. When the story of its outrages reached Paris in 1899 there was a public uproar and a second mission was dispatched to investigate. Eventually, on July 14 1899, the two missions met and confronted each other in a dramatic shootout, which led Voulet and Chanoine to declare their independence from France and their desire to establish an African kingdom under their own rule. But their mad dreams of kingship were soon cut short when they fell prey to a mutiny among the African soldiers under their command in which they were both killed. The whole bizarre tale of Voulet and Chanoine's mission sharply divided opinion back home in France but was eventually explained away as the action of two deranged minds. Yet, as Bertrand Taithe shows, it was not simply a tale of individual insanity. In many ways, the actions of Voulet and Chanoine and their men simply took the violence of European colonialism to a logical extreme, while the way in which the whole affair was soon forgotten is highly revealing of western attitudes to imperial excess in Africa and elsewhere.

Download or read book Who Killed Hammarskjold written by Susan Williams and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2014-08-15 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the outstanding mysteries of the twentieth century, and one with huge political resonance, is the death of Dag Hammarskjold and his UN team in a plane crash in central Africa in 1961. Just minutes after midnight, his aircraft plunged into thick forest in the British colony of Northern Rhodesia (Zambia), abruptly ending his mission to bring peace to the Congo. Across the world, many suspected sabotage, accusing the multi-nationals and the governments of Britain, Belgium, the USA and South Africa of involvement in the disaster. These suspicions have never gone away. British High Commissioner Lord Alport was waiting at the airport when the aircraft crashed nearby. He bizarrely insisted to the airport management that Hammarskjold had flown elsewhere - even though his aircraft was reported overhead. This postponed a search for so long that the wreckage of the plane was not found for fifteen hours. White mercenaries were at the airport that night too, including the South African pilot Jerry Puren, whose bombing of Congolese villages led, in his own words, to 'flaming huts ...destruction and death'. These soldiers of fortune were backed by Sir Roy Welensky, Prime Minister of the Rhodesian Federation, who was ready to stop at nothing to maintain white rule and thought the United Nations was synonymous with the Nazis. The Rhodesian government conducted an official inquiry, which blamed pilot error. But as this book will show, it was a massive cover-up that suppressed and dismissed a mass of crucial evidence, especially that of African eye-witnesses. A subsequent UN inquiry was unable to rule out foul play - but had no access to the evidence to show how and why. Now, for the first time, this story can be told. Who Killed Hammarskjold follows the author on her intriguing and often frightening journey of research to Zambia, South Africa, the USA, Sweden, Norway, Britain, France and Belgium, where she unearthed a mass of new and hitherto secret documentary and photographic evidence. At the heart of this book is Hammarskjold himself - a courageous and complex idealist, who sought to shield the newly-independent nations of the world from the predatory instincts of the Great Powers. It reveals that the conflict in the Congo was driven not so much by internal divisions, as by the Cold War and by the West's determination to keep real power from the hands of the post-colonial governments of Africa. It shows, too, that the British settlers of Rhodesia would maintain white minority rule at all costs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Big Elephant Has Been Killed is a deeply moving and gripping narrative that interweaves stories of ordinary friendships and love's lost promises with a discussion of society and politics in contemporary Ghana. Although Ghana provides the setting, the novel foregrounds a range of issues relevant to Africa and the black Diaspora as a whole. Badly disillusioned from their years of youthful idealism, a group of friends clings with fleeting solace to their vision for their country through their discussions on poverty, pan-Africanism, underdevelopment, religious identity, social revolution and Africa's relationship with the West. But the challenges of their daily existence compel them to question the ethics and relevance of their idealism, and eventually lead to the desperate decision to steal from the "Big Elephant" in the penultimate gamble to empower themselves as agents of social transformation.

Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • From the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Goldfinch comes an utterly riveting novel set in Mississippi of childhood, innocence, and evil. • “Destined to become a special kind of classic.” —The New York Times Book Review The setting is Alexandria, Mississippi, where one Mother’s Day a little boy named Robin Cleve Dufresnes was found hanging from a tree in his parents’ yard. Twelve years later Robin’s murder is still unsolved and his family remains devastated. So it is that Robin’s sister Harriet—unnervingly bright, insufferably determined, and unduly influenced by the fiction of Kipling and Robert Louis Stevenson--sets out to unmask his killer. Aided only by her worshipful friend Hely, Harriet crosses her town’s rigid lines of race and caste and burrows deep into her family’s history of loss. Filled with hairpin turns of plot and “a bustling, ridiculous humanity worthy of Dickens” (The New York Times Book Review), The Little Friend is a work of myriad enchantments by a writer of prodigious talent.

Book Do Not Disturb

Download or read book Do Not Disturb written by Michela Wrong and published by PublicAffairs. This book was released on 2021-03-30 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A powerful investigation into a grisly political murder and the authoritarian regime behind it: Do Not Disturb upends the narrative that Rwanda sold the world after one of the deadliest genocides of the twentieth century. We think we know the story of Africa’s Great Lakes region. Following the Rwandan genocide, an idealistic group of young rebels overthrew the brutal regime in Kigali, ushering in an era of peace and stability that made Rwanda the donor darling of the West, winning comparisons with Switzerland and Singapore. But the truth was considerably more sinister. Vividly sourcing her story with direct testimony from key participants, Wrong uses the story of the murder of Patrick Karegeya, once Rwanda’s head of external intelligence and a quicksilver operator of supple charm, to paint the portrait of a modern African dictatorship created in the chilling likeness of Paul Kagame, the president who sanctioned his former friend’s assassination.

Book African Culture and Global Politics

Download or read book African Culture and Global Politics written by Toyin Falola and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-01-10 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume attempts to insert itself within the larger discussion of Africa in the twenty-first century, especially within the realm of world politics. Despite the underwhelming amount of attention given to Africa's role in international politics in popular news sources, it is evident that Africa has a consistent record of participating in world politics- one that pre-dates colonization and continues today. In continuance of this legacy of active participation in global political exchanges, Africans today can be heard in dialogues that span the world and their roles are impossible to replace by other entities. It is evident that a vastly different Africa exists than ones that bolster images of starvation, corruption, and compliance. The essays in this volume center on Africa and Africans participating in international political discourses, but with an emphasis on various forms of expression and philosophies, as these factors heavily influence Africa's role as a participant in global politics. The reader will find a variety of essays that permeate surface discussions of politics and political activism by inserting African culture, rhetoric, philosophies into the larger discussion of international politics and Africa's role in worldwide political, social, and economic debates.

Book African Sorceress

Download or read book African Sorceress written by M.E. Skeel and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2020-02-12 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: African Sorceress: War on the Sahel, is one woman’s fight against the evil Atlantic slave trade. It is based on an oral tradition story the author heard in Africa. It takes place in the 1600s in what is now Ghana. The heroine is Kisa, who we first meet in African Sorceress: A Warrior is Forged. Her village is raided by slave traders who sell their captives to the Dutch slave masters in the infamous Elmina slave castle. Kisa trains to be a sorceress and a warrior and lead her people to victory against the slavers. In War on the Sahel, Kisa and her lover Kojo take the war beyond their village. They infiltrate the slave castle, lead a mutiny on a slave ship, take a Portuguese trading fort and build an army to fight the African slave traders who are supplying the Europeans. The action is fast-paced, the story is credible, exciting and imaginative and it’s a great way to learn a largely untold history. The story is heroic fantasy but wrapped within the fantasy are the facts of 17th century Africa and the damage the slave trade caused to the proud independent peoples represented in Kisa’s Army. We meet the tribes that make up her army of freed captives, representing many distinct cultures, languages, customs and spiritual traditions. These oral traditions were just as deep, rich and complex as those of cultures with written languages. What reviewers said about African Sorceress: A Warrior is Forged - “Skeel has done a fantastic job taking on such a huge and largely hidden topic.” - “A really original story, unlike anything I've read before. A lot of research must have gone into this book to weave so many threads of history, anthropology, and geography into the tale. Read it for fun or read it to learn about a part of history most of us have never heard of -- either way you'll enjoy it.” - “Skeel immerses you into the world of the Atlantic slave trade from a perspective that is rarely--if ever--told. Skeel masterfully balances being as informative as any historian while being as entertaining as the best storytellers”
