Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE STORY: Jabez Stone, young farmer, has just been married, and the guests are dancing at his wedding. But Jabez carries a burden, for he knows that, having sold his soul to the Devil, he must, on the stroke of midnight, deliver it up to him. Shortly before twelve Mr. Scratch, lawyer, enters and the company is thunderstruck. Jabez bids his guests begone; he has made his bargain and will pay the price. His bride, however, stands by him, and so will Daniel Webster, who has come for the festivities. Webster takes the case. But Scratch is a lawyer himself and out-argues the statesman. Webster demands a jury of real Americans, living or dead. Very well, agrees the Devil, he shall have them, and ghosts appear. Webster thunders, but to no avail, and at last realizing Scratch can better him on technical grounds, he changes his tactics and appeals to the ghostly jury, men who have retained some love of country. Rising to the height of his powers, Webster performs the miracle of winning a verdict of Not Guilty.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Death of Mr. Webster: A Sermon Preached in Hollis-Street Meeting-House, on Sunay, Oct, 31, 1852 The words I have selected from the Old Testament are perfectly applicable as an expression of the greatness which has recently been stricken from the living forces of our country. He was preferred above all presidents and princes. The highest office would have been nothing but the proper pedestal, to set the proportions of his greatness in their appropriate position and relief. The largest honors would have been only the natural drapery of his broad shoulders. If all the great men of this generation could have been collected from all nations, it is probable that no one would have been found to deserve the preeminent place for massiveness and majesty of mind, and to stand forth, by honorable election, as "the foremost man of all this world," so much as he whose mortal life has recently been quenched. But, however this may be, it cannot be questioned that the crown of our national genius has been snatched away by death. By common consent of the most eminent in our land. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Death of Mr. Webster: Sermon Preached in Hollis-Street Meeting-House, on Sunday, Oct; 31, 1852 There is but one subject that can engage our thoughts in the church to-day. A great sorrow pervades the air. The solemn sense of irreparable loss weighs down the spirits of the American people. Out from the heart of the land has burst a grief, of which the official symbols - the dreary tones of the cannon, the mourning drapery, the lowered ags, the public resolutions are, for once, the honest and feeble signs. The whole feeling of the nation, like a con scious weeping willow, arches its vast respect, and droops its sensitive foliage over one new-made grave. Book Daniel Webster

Download or read book Daniel Webster written by Robert Vincent Remini and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 1997 with total page 830 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this monumental new biography, Robert V. Remini gives us a full life of Webster from his birth, early schooling, and rapid rise as a lawyer and politician in New Hampshire to his equally successful career in Massachusetts where he moved in 1816. Remini treats both the man and his time as they tangle in issues such as westward expansion, growth of democracy, market revolution, slavery and abolitionism, the National Bank, and tariff issues. Webster's famous speeches are fully discussed as are his relations with the other two of the "great triumvirate", Henry Clay and John C. Calhoun. Throughout, Remini pays close attention to Webster's personal life - perhaps more than Webster would have liked - his relationships with family and friends, and his murky financial dealings with men of wealth and influence.
