Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For almost two decades after Mao Zedong's death, an epic, no-holds-barred contest was waged in China between orthodox Marxists and reformers. With Deng Xiaoping's strong support, the reformers ultimately won; but they--and China--paid a heavy price. Here, Richard Baum provides a lively, comprehensive guide to the intricate theater of post-Mao Chinese politics. He tells the intriguing story of an escalating intergenerational clash of ideas and values between the aging revolutionaries of the Maoist era and their younger, more pragmatic successors. Baum deftly analyzes the anatomy of the reformers' ultimate victory in his brilliant reconstruction of the twists and turns of the reform process.

Book The Chinese Academy of Social Sciences CASS

Download or read book The Chinese Academy of Social Sciences CASS written by Margaret Sleeboom-Faulkner and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2007-01-30 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This socio-political analysis of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) sheds new light on the link between China’s educational reforms and the ideological control exerted by the Party-state. It explores the dynamics of the ways in which the academic community has carved out and utilised the spaces between the academic and Party leadership and the free will of the individual. By differentiating between various forms of power, the author shows how knowledge produced at CASS is influenced not only as a direct result of top-down decisions-making but also unintentionally through organizational networks that interlock both leaders and led in the institutions they helped shape. Administrative tools and symbolic representation in official ceremony are shown to be indispensable for an adequate understanding of the generation of knowledge at CASS. Book Law and Legality in China

    Book Details:
  • Author : Laszlo Ladany
  • Publisher : University of Hawaii Press
  • Release : 1992-01-01
  • ISBN : 9780824814731
  • Pages : 200 pages

Download or read book Law and Legality in China written by Laszlo Ladany and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 1992-01-01 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fr Laszlo Ladany, SJ, published only one book in his lifetime (The Communist Party of China and Marxism, 1921-1985: A Self-Portrait), but became widely known and respected as the doyen of 'China-watchers' through his editorship of China News Analysis in Hong Kong in 1953-82. On his death in 1990 he left this survey, simply expressed but revealing on every page the depth of his knowledge of the Chinese people and of Chinese and comparative legal history, one of his own earlier special subjects of study. His ultimate concern is to illustrate the antipathy of Mao Tse-tung to law, even in a form renewed according to Marxist doctrine, and to age-old customary Chinese concepts of acceptable behaviour: this created a mental and spiritual void in a whole generation of Chinese with possibly irreversible and certainly unpredictable consequences. The book is a deeply thought-provoking introduction to the study of Chinese history, politics and culture. Two distinguished German sinologists, Professor Jurgen Domes and Dr Marie-Luise Nath, have, between them, edited the work and provided short opening and concluding sections.
