Book The Death of Fitzroy Football Club

Download or read book The Death of Fitzroy Football Club written by Russel Holmesby and published by . This book was released on 2020-04 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Death of Fitzroy Football Club is an oral history, outlining the reasons why Fitzroy FC, one of the founding clubs of the VFL in 1896, lost its way and eventually was merged with the Brisbane Bears. The book covers the spread of years from the seventies, through a period when the club was strong on the field in the early eighties, to the club's death, at the end of the 1996 season. Fitzroy FC never had a chance when the VFL moved into the professional era. Despite its heritage, despite some of its champion players and coaches, it never had the financial wherewithal to survive. The beginning of the end can be traced to the seventies, when finances became tight, and the club's best players had to be traded for cash. The author has curated contemporaneous interviews from Inside Football magazine and other publications, together with interviews with those intimately involved in the club's final days, including the AFL's CEO, Ross Oakley, who oversaw the club's final merge with the Brisbane Bears. The book describes the emotional fallout that saw families split, and supporters discarding their relationship with the AFL game.

Book excerpt: In 1996, the 113-year-old Fitzroy Football Club played its final game in the AFL. Financial pressures brought about by the steady professionalisation of the AFL respected neither the worth of the club's history nor the passion of its fans. Out of time and money, on 4 July 1996 Fitzroy was forced into a merger with the Brisbane Bears - creating the League's first, and thus far only, merged club. MERGER tells the story of that fateful year, from boardroom drama and intrigue to the wind and mud of the Whitten Oval, capturing the profound tragedy of Fitzroy's doomed plight. 'The demise of Fitzroy is a deep wound rather than a scar. A tear in the fabric of the game that will never truly repair.' - from the Foreword by Gerard Whateley

Book excerpt: Winner, Ned Kelly Award, Best Crime Novel, 2000 It takes a lot to rattle Jack Irish but, as Melbourne descends into a cold, wet winter, his mood is on the same trajectory. The woman in Jack's life has reconnected with an old flame. He has gambled and lost massively and seen a champion horse put down. It's not surprising that Jack's mind is not fully on the job he's being paid to do: find Robbie Colburne, occasional barman. But when Jack does get serious, he finds the freelance drink-dispenser is of great interest to some powerful people, people with very bad habits and a distinct lack of respect for the criminal justice system...Any lapse in concentration could prove fatal. Peter Temple is the author of nine novels, including four books in the Jack Irish series. He has won the Ned Kelly Award for Crime Fiction five times, and his widely acclaimed novels have been published in over twenty countries. The Broken Shore won the UK's prestigious Duncan Lawrie Dagger for the best crime novel of 2007 and Truth won the 2010 Miles Franklin Literary Award, the first time a crime writer has won an award of this calibre anywhere in the world. Temple's first two novels Bad Debts and Black Tide have been made into films with Guy Pearce starring as Jack Irish. They screened on the ABC in August, 2012. 'Another world-class crime novel from Peter Temple.' Canberra Times 'Temple writes...with enough insight and passion to make the reader ask exactly where the boundary lies between genre fiction and serious literary fiction.' Sydney Morning Herald 'Temple is as dark and mean, as cool and as mesmerising, as any James Ellroy or Elmore Leonard with whom you might kill the small or sad hours.' Peter Craven, Age 'Temple's work is spare, deeply ironic; his wit, like the local beer, as cold as a dental anaesthetic.' Graeme Blundell, Australian 'It's clever, funny, exciting and exceedingly well written. The author weaves multi layers of plot, life, characters and emotions into an exceedingly satisfying narrative that grips from first to last page. If you haven't yet discovered Temple, track down his books. He's premier class.' Daily Examiner UK

Book From the Outer

Download or read book From the Outer written by Nicole Hayes and published by Black Inc.. This book was released on 2016-03-31 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A celebration of our great game, From the Outer brings together 30 personal stories about Aussie Rules from unexpected voices: those who are female, Indigenous or gay; those with a disability, a foreign accent or even – perhaps most dubious of all – literary leanings. Some are closet fans, some are out and proud. Many are ground-breaking and revolutionary, shaking up the institution that has dominated cultural life in Melbourne, and much of Australia, for generations. Some are actively involved in the game, such as Leila Gurruwiwi, panellist on Australia’s first all-Indigenous footy show; Angela Pippos, one of Australia’s first female sports commentators; and Jason Tuazon-McCheyne, founder of the LGBTI supporter group the Purple Bombers. Others, like Christos Tsiolkas, Sophie Cunningham, Tony Birch and Alice Pung, share their poignant, passionate experiences as spectators and supporters. Engaging and surprising, From the Outer shows how footy can both thrill and devastate, exclude and unite, by shining a light on the diversity and splendour of the game. ‘From the Outer is a timely reminder of what keeps us coming back to the oval.’ —Books+Publishing

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Journalist Karen Kissane follows the accused into the courtroom, telling the inside story of one of Australia’s most controversial trials and the marriage at its centre. A compelling combination of great writing, true crime and courtroom drama. Julie and Jamie Ramage were the perfect middle-class Australian couple with everything: children at private schools, he a company director and she a financial controller for a fashion house. But Julie walked out of their seemingly perfect marriage. And then, one day, he killed her. Beneath the veneer of perfection there had lain a relationship marred by affairs, obsession and a history of violence. Jamie confessed to the killing - but declared that he had been provoked and therefore not guilty of murder as his wife had driven him over the edge. Jamie's defence of provocation was successful and he is now serving a prison sentence for the lesser crime of manslaughter. The woman he strangled the life from and buried in a shallow grave had no voice in court and no way of telling her story. Silent Death tells Julie's story - but also takes us into the disturbing wider situation - how a killing took place in the comfort and security of a moneyed life; how friends and family either didn't see or think they should be involved. And it is the story of how a court case is about tactics and procedure first - and justice second.

Book The Red Fox

Download or read book The Red Fox written by Ben Collins and published by Slattery Media Group. This book was released on 2008 with total page 768 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Norm Smith is arguably the greatest Australian Football coach in history. Smith - who, in 1996, was selected as the coach of the Australian Football League's Team of the Century - led the Melbourne Demons to a staggering six premierships from 1955 to 1964. When it came to football, he was a hard man, brutally honest to his players and an utterly ruthless and fearsome disciplinarian, but this was offset by a gentler, charitable side of his nature which was rarely seen in public. This is his story, and secondarily that of his older brother and fellow coach Len Smith, from their childhood in tough, working-class Northcote during the Depression; Norm as a childhood supporter of Collingwood, the club he would conquer many times over as a man; through his distinguished playing career at Melbourne where he built a reputation as the most unselfish player in the game; his first coaching job at Fitzroy; his triumphant reign at Melbourne, detailing his relationship with his ‘foster son' Ron Barassi, his friendly coaching rivalry with his brother, and his controversial sacking and reinstatement in 1965; to his last coaching job at South Melbourne, which in 1970 he lifted to its first finals series in 25 years, and culminating in his premature death at the age of 57

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has been an explosion in the quantity of sports history literature published in recent years, making it increasingly difficult to keep abreast of developments. The annual number of publications has increased from around 250 to 1,000 a year over the last decade. This is due in part to the fact that during the late 1980s and 90s, many clubs, leagues and governing bodies of sport have celebrated their centenaries and produced histories to mark this occasion and commemorate their achievements. It is also the result of the growing popularity and realisation of the importance of sport history research within academe. This international bibliography of books, articles, conference proceedings and essays in the English language is a one-stop for the sports historian to know what is new.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: War remembrance and sport have become increasingly entwined in Australia, with AFL and NRL Anzac Day fixtures attracting larger crowds than dawn services. National representative teams travel halfway around the world to visit battle sites etched in military folklore. To validate their integration into this culturally sacred occasion, promoters point to the special role of sport in the development of the Anzac legend, and with it, the birth of the nation. The air of sombre reflection that surrounds each Anzac Day is accompanied by a celebratory nationalism that sport and war supposedly embody. But what exactly is being remembered, and indeed forgotten, in these official commemorations and tributes? In Not Playing the Game, Xavier Fowler reveals that the place of sport in the Great War was highly contested. Civilian patriots and public officials complained that spectator sport distracted young men from enlisting and wasted public finances better spent elsewhere. Sport’s defenders argued it was a necessary escape for a population weary of the pressures of war. These competing views often reflected differences of class, politics and ethnicity, and resulted in ferocious, sometimes violent, clashes. Not Playing the Game challenges the way our memories of the war are influenced by the fervour of sport, painting a picture not of triumph but immense turmoil and tragedy.

Book excerpt: This fascinating book examines the deadly impact of The Great War on a number of leading professional sportsmen of the age. Their untimely deaths pressed home how even the fittest and most gifted were vulnerable and their loss was felt by far more than their families and friends. Among those featured in this well illustrated book are: Donald Bell - the only professional football player to win the Victoria Cross: Anthony Wilder - the glamorous Wimbledon champion who fell in May 1915; Francois Faber - the Tour de France star: Percy Poulton Palmer - England Rugby Captain; and numerous others. Also covered are those sports-orientated units such as 16 Battalion Royal Scots (formed around Heart of Midlothian FC) and 11 King’s Royal Rifle Corps (professional golfers). We learn of their formation, training and war service. Finally the authors study the effect of the conflict on the world of sport - canceling of fixture, use of facilities etc.
