Book The DB Site An Archaeological Site at Fort Leavenworth Kansas

Download or read book The DB Site An Archaeological Site at Fort Leavenworth Kansas written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The DB site was discovered in 1994 during an archaeological survey by the University of Kansas Museum of Anthropology (KUMA) in and around the Quarry Creek drainage, Leavenworth County, Kansas. Many archaeological sites are discovered during a survey, in which archaeologists walk through a designated area and examine the ground for artifacts on the surface. If the ground cover is too dense to see the surface, they perform shovel tests. A shovelful of earth is scooped out at constant intervals along the survey route and checked to see if it contains artifacts. While this method can miss some sites, it has revealed the presence of many others. It was clear from plans of the proposed United States Disciplinary Barracks that construction of this prison would disturb the site. Was the DB site significant enough to take action? KU archaeologists answered this question by conducting additional surveys and test excavations in July and October of 1995.

Book Archaeological Investigations at Fort Leavenworth Kansas Phase 2

Download or read book Archaeological Investigations at Fort Leavenworth Kansas Phase 2 written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Archaeological investigations were conducted at eight location at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas, during October and November of 1992 by American Resources Group, Ltd., under a subcontract with Higganbotham, Briggs, and Associates. Seven of these project areas (1-7) were identified by the Directorate of Public Works (DPW) at Ft. Leavenworth as locations for future construction. Archival research conducted as part of a 1977 archaeological survey identified 14 Historic Building Sites (HBS 5, 10, 38, 39-41, 46-49, 131-133, 141) within these project areas. Archaeological investigations at the various HBS sites consisted of a combination of archival research and screened shovel tests (all sites), excavation of archaeological test units (six sites), and use of a hydraulic soil probe to extract soil samples (two sites). One HBS site (10) was deleted from investigation during the course of the project. Archival research revealed that at least 14 additional HBS sites, some of which date back to the early 1830s are potentially located within the seven project areas. In addition, one of the HBS sites (HBS 46) to be investigated as part of the current project was found to be incorrectly located on the 1977 map. Nineteenth century subsurface features were encountered at HBS 5, 38, 39, and 40-41. Although nineteenth and twentieth century materials were recovered from the remaining HBS sites subsurface features were not identified. Based on the information recovered by the investigations, it is recommended that HBS sites 40, 41, 131-133, and 141 are ineligible for the National Register of Historic Places. Test excavations for the purpose of assessing NRHP eligibility and defining site boundaries also were conducted at areas 881 and 882 of the Fincher site.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Kanorado to Pawnee villages, Kansas is a land rich in archaeological sites--nearly 12,000 known-that testify to its prehistoric heritage. This volume presents the first comprehensive overview of Kansas archaeology in nearly fifty years, containing the most current descriptions and interpretations of the state's archaeological record. Building on Waldo Wedel's classic Introduction to Kansas Archaeology, it synthesizes more than four decades of research and discusses all major prehistoric time periods in one readily accessible resource. In Kansas Archaeology, a team of distinguished contributors, all experts in their fields, synthesize what is known about the human presence in Kansas from the age of the mammoth hunters, circa 10,000 B.C., to Euro-American contact in the mid-nineteenth century. Covering such sites as Kanorado-one of the oldest in the Americas-the authors review prehistoric peoples of the Paleoarchaic era, Woodland cultures, Central Plains tradition, High Plains Upper Republican culture, Late Prehistoric Oneota, and Great Bend peoples. They also present material on three historic cultures: Wichita, Kansa, and Pawnee. The findings presented here shed new light on issues such as how people adapted to environmental shifts and the impact of technological innovation on social behavior. Included also are chapters on specialized topics such as plant use in prehistory, sources of stone for tool manufacture, and the effects of landscape evolution on sites. Chapters on Kansas culture history also reach into the surrounding region and offer directions for future inquiry. More than eighty illustrations depict a wide range of artifacts and material remains. An invaluable resource for archaeologists and students, Kansas Archaeology is also accessible to interested laypeople--anyone needing a summary of the material remains that have been found in Kansas. It demonstrates the major advances in our understanding of Kansas prehistory that have applications far beyond its borders and point the way toward our future understanding of the past.

Book The Calf Creek Horizon

Download or read book The Calf Creek Horizon written by Jon C. Lohse and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2022-01-18 with total page 1086 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Often characterized by distinctive chipped-stone technology, the Calf Creek cultural horizon made its first appearance in the central and southern plains of North America some six thousand years ago. Distributed over a known area of more than 500,000 square miles, it is one of the largest post-Paleoindian archaeological cultural complexes identified to date. One of the most notable aspects of Calf Creek culture is its distinctive, deeply notched bifaces, many of which show evidence of heat-treating. Recent targeted dating suggests that these unique traits, which required exacting knapping and other techniques for production, arose in a relatively narrow window, sometime around 5,950–5,700 calendar years before the present. Given the wide geographical distribution of Calf Creek artifacts, however, researchers surmise that these technological innovations, once adopted, spread fairly quickly throughout the associated cultural groups. Editors Jon C. Lohse, Marjorie A. Duncan, and Don G. Wyckoff have collected in this comprehensive volume much of what is currently known about the Calf Creek cultural horizon. In a collaboration involving professional and academic archaeologists, landowners, and avocationalists, The Calf Creek Horizon brings together for the first time in a single source fine details of geographic distribution, regional variability, typology, and technological aspects of Calf Creek material culture. This first-ever “big picture” view will inform and direct related research for years to come.
