Murphy received his B.S. from the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy, and his M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin. He has taught at the University of Kentucky, Pennsylvania State University, and for many years in the Graduate School of Geography at Clark University, Massachusetts. He has contributed numerous articles to geographical literature and is the author of several books. He was also editor of Economic Geography.

The cauldron of social problems of the city, as the riots showed, offers no simple solutions. The myriad of local, state, and federal agencies only further complicates formulating and implementing coherent policies for the city.
