Book excerpt: Peter Irons, acclaimed historian and author of A People History of the Supreme Court, explores of one of the supreme court's most important decisions and its disappointing aftermath In 1954 the U.S. Supreme Court sounded the death knell for school segregation with its decision in Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka. So goes the conventional wisdom. Weaving together vivid portraits of lawyers and such judges as Thurgood Marshall and Earl Warren, sketches of numerous black children throughout history whose parents joined lawsuits against Jim Crow schools, and gripping courtroom drama scenes, Irons shows how the erosion of the Brown decision—especially by the Court’s rulings over the past three decades—has led to the “resegregation” of public education in America.

Book Nothing Is Forever

Download or read book Nothing Is Forever written by Vivian Stirpe and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2021-08-25 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of the incidents that took place during the great depression and during prohibition days are depicted in this story. It was a very difficult time for people. There were no TV’s or cell phones. My father was a barber and he earned 40 cents a haircut. My mother sewed covers on baseballs for 10 cents each. We were very poor. There were many Italian immigrants that settled in the United States. They were so thankful to become citizens. They learned about our constitution and our history, got jobs and paid taxes, etc. They learned the English language and learned it well. My grandfather read the local newspaper daily and was self-educated. They were the melting pot of the world. They came from every country in the world. They all came here to be free, find a job and become an American citizen. They were happy to be in a free country. They were resourceful and got along with everyone. I lived in a Jewish, Italian neighborhood. We had no problems. Everyone got along. We had a good life in spite of our hardships.

Book excerpt: Robert, Cass, and Julia share a complex history going back to their college days in California-a triangle of lovers; a baby born in a marijuana field; a night of changing names and fleeing to Seattle. There are scars from ax blades and broken glass. Uneasy truces. Prying neighbors. The threat of war. And enough vegetables growing in the yard to feed a household through the winter. Now, on the morning of Robert Hamlin's 45th birthday, in the last year of setting fire to the world, everything is about to ignite again. How many strangers make a family? When does water flow thicker than blood? The universe is a random and violent place, after all, where souls-the lucky ones-find their way back eventually to the source of human kindness. Tucker collects his characters from the streets and his hopes for them from the stars. This is the story of human history, staged on a sixth of an acre in north Seattle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The late Dwight Conquergood’s research has inspired an entire generation of scholars invested in performance as a meaningful paradigm to understand human interaction, especially between structures of power and the disenfranchised. Conquergood’s research laid the groundwork for others to engage issues of ethics in ethnographic research, performance as a meaningful paradigm for ethnography, and case studies that demonstrated the dissolution of theory/practice binaries.Cultural Struggles is the first gathering of Conquergood’s work in a single volume, tracing the evolution of one scholar’s thinking across a career of scholarship, teaching, and activism, and also the first collection of its kind to bring together theory, method, and complete case studies. The collection begins with an illuminating introduction by E. Patrick Johnson and ends with commentary by other scholars (Micaela di Leonardo, Judith Hamera, Shannon Jackson, D. Soyini Madison, Lisa Merrill, Della Pollock, and Joseph Roach), engaging aspects of Conquergood’s work and providing insight into how that work has withstood the test of time, as scholars still draw on his research to inform their current interests and methods.
