Download or read book The Day s Work Many Inventions Classic Reprint written by Rudyard Kipling and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 732 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Day's Work Many Inventions The least that Findlayson, of the Public Works Department, expected was a C.I.E.; he dreamed of a C.S.I.: indeed his friends told him that he deserved more. For three years he had endured heat and cold, disappointment, discomfort, danger, and disease, with responsibility almost too heavy for one pair of shoulders; and day by day, through that time, the great Kashi Bridge over the Ganges had grown under his charge. Now, in less than three months, if all went well, His Excellency the Viceroy would open the bridge in state, an archbishop would bless it, the first train-load of soldiers would come over it, and there would be speeches. Findlayson, C.E., sat in his trolley on a construction-line that ran along one of the main revetments - the huge stone-faced banks that flared away north and south for three miles on either side of the river - and permitted himself to think of the end. With its approaches, his work was one mile and three-quarters in length; a lattice-girder bridge, trussed with the Findlayson truss, standing on seven-and-twenty brick piers. Each one of those piers was twenty-four feet in diameter, capped with red Agra stone and sunk eighty feet below the shifting sand of the Ganges' bed. Book American Inventions and Inventors Classic Reprint

Download or read book American Inventions and Inventors Classic Reprint written by William A. Mowry and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-12 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Inventions and Inventors While we watch the steamer glide around Castle Garden into East River, evening begins to come on; we must hasten uptown. As we pass along Broadway, lights flash out in the darkness and our thoughts are again turned to fire and steam. We have heard that the source of the electric light is in the dynamo, and that steam power is used to turn that great machine. The enormous engine, the mammoth boat, the brilliant light - all need the power of steam, and nothing but fire will produce this steam. What, then, is fire? And is its only use that of changing quiet, liquid water into powerful steam? Let us see. Did you notice that machine shop which we passed when we were in Cleveland a few days ago? Did you see those furnaces with the huge volumes of flame bursting out of the open doors? You know that great heat is necessary to make tools and other implements of iron, and all the instruments of everyday life that are formed out of metals. Our pens and needles, our hoes and rakes, our horseshoes, our stoves and furnaces, our registers and the iron of our desks - all de pend upon heat for their production. Fire can do much for us. To change water into steam is but one of its powers. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A Calendar of Invention and Discovery Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Calendar of Invention and Discovery Classic Reprint written by John Cassan Wait and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-17 with total page 816 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Calendar of Invention and Discovery The scholar mourns and antiquity weeps over the wreck of ancient learning and art - the philosopher regrets that sufficient of both has not been preserved to elucidate interesting discoveries, which history has mentioned; nor to prove that those principles of science, upon which the action of their machines depended, were understood. The mechanic seeks in vain the processes by which his predecessors in remote ages worked the hardest granite without iron, transported it in masses that astound -ud used them in the erection of stupendous buildings, apparently with the facili-t that modern workmen lay bricks or raise lintels 0 doors. We are ignorant of their modes of working metals. Of their alloy which rivaled steel in hardness, of their furnaces, crucibles, and moulds; or of the details of forming the ennobling statue. Unfortunately learned men of old deemed it a part of wisdom to conceal from the vulgar all discoveries of science. They wrapped them in mystical figures that the people might not apprehend them. Book Inventions That Didn t Change the World

Download or read book Inventions That Didn t Change the World written by Julie Halls and published by Thames & Hudson. This book was released on 2014-12-09 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A captivating, humorous, and downright perplexing selection of nineteenth-century inventions as revealed through remarkable–and hitherto unseen–illustrations from the British National Archive Inventions that Didn’t Change the World is a fascinating visual tour through some of the most bizarre inventions registered with the British authorities in the nineteenth century. In an era when Britain was the workshop of the world, design protection (nowadays patenting) was all the rage, and the apparently lenient approval process meant that all manner of bizarre curiosities were painstakingly recorded, in beautiful color illustrations and well-penned explanatory text, alongside the genuinely great inventions of the period. Irreverent commentary contextualizes each submission as well as taking a humorous view on how each has stood the test of time. This book introduces such gems as a ventilating top hat; an artificial leech; a design for an aerial machine adapted for the arctic regions; an anti-explosive alarm whistle; a tennis racket with ball-picker; and a currant-cleaning machine. Here is everything the end user could possibly require for a problem he never knew he had. Organized by area of application—industry, clothing, transportation, medical, health and safety, the home, and leisure—Inventions that Didn’t Change the World reveals the concerns of a bygone era giddy with the possibilities of a newly industrialized world.
