Book excerpt: The Day of Atonement was a day of rest, penitence, and purification for Israelites of loyal character. On this day, sins and impurities that had accumulated throughout the year were removed from the tabernacle by the application of sacrificial blood to its altars and compartments and transferred by the high priest's confession onto the goat for Azazel, which carried them to the desert. Israel was thus rendered "clean" before the Lord, ensuring that he would continue to dwell in their midst. As it became ingrained in the veil of Jewish consciousness, the Day of Atonement underwent a process of reflection and reimagination as shown in Second Temple literature, where Azazel plays a significant eschatological role. Arriving in New Testament times, the day's imagery and typology presented irresistible motifs which its authors used to proclaim Jesus Christ's atoning death and heavenly intercession on behalf of believers. By utilizing a coherent intertextual approach, this book explores how John wove the Day of Atonement into the colorful literary tapestry of Revelation.

Book Atonement and the Logic of Resurrection in Hebrews 9 27 28

Download or read book Atonement and the Logic of Resurrection in Hebrews 9 27 28 written by William W. Henry and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2024-09-05 with total page 613 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The general believer waiting for salvation by Jesus hopes to see him appear while living or promptly at death. Comfort during loss of life usually portrays those passing now in heaven. Conversely, the more religiously academic, the less one thinks anyone, ever, goes to heaven. Trained scholars typically choose a closed heaven with temporal delays and spatial detours in limitation of God’s promises about “so great salvation.” “Better” typically perceives as a resuscitated flesh on earth that lives by decay of the surrounding creation. Hearing word-meaning by mapping creation with an old first-century option for plural heavens, this project reexamines the conversation recommended by the pastor in the letter to the Hebrews about promises regarding the twofold ministry of Christ. By analysis with current study tools, the conversation both challenges the common academy views and reintroduces a first-century hearing option for God’s speech concerning prompt, postmortem, Christ fulfillment into heaven. Listening includes the milk of the beginning teaching requirements for atonement and logic of resurrection to God immediately after death and judgment. Hearing senses the solid food about priestly intercession by Jesus after death at judgment to shepherd his believers for salvation into heaven a very little while after individual death and judgment.

Book excerpt: Scott Burgess has crafted a most intriguing commentary on Revelation's Old Testament counterpart. Readers will treasure The Stand: Jesus in the Book of Daniel for its educational and devotional value. It not only aids in deciphering mysteries and symbols but also encourages and promotes complete dedication to our Lord and Savior as it highlights the central theme of standing unsullied in the end-time judgment. The author upholds the traditional Adventist methodology of allowing Scripture to interpret itself, and looking to history to confirm fulfilled prophecy. With that said, he also introduces a number of fresh insights. He highlights fascinating linguistic and conceptual connections with other portions of Scripture that many of us have not identified before. Those who pore over this tome will find a number of areas they readily agree with, and other areas that will require prayerful reflection before forming a decision, but nearly all will acknowledge Burgess' skillful manner of provoking prayerful thought and contemplation. What makes any book like this truly worthwhile is the presence of Christ. Burgess stresses the ubiquity of His manifestation throughout the book—as the One who rules the universe, past, present, and future; and as the One who empowers His people to withstand the fiercest opposition for the sake of faithfulness to Him and His commandments. Jesus offers the same empowerment to us, especially as imminent events parallel what the four Hebrews experienced. This 2,500-plus-year-old document speaks to us today.

Book The Final Atonement and the Judgment of the Living

Download or read book The Final Atonement and the Judgment of the Living written by Mark Shipowick and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2021-03-29 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The final phase of Christ's atonement, the judgment of the living, is mentioned in several scriptures, including Revelation 14:6 which is heaven's announcement that the "hour of His judgment" has arrived. The attention of the world was first drawn to that message in the great revival of the early 1840's called the Second Great Awakening. Before the return of Christ this message will be proclaimed again in the power of the latter rain at the judgment of the living. Daniel 7 and Revelation 4 and 5 describe what takes place at that time. In both of these parallel descriptions the heavenly court convenes and at that time the Son of Man is glorified and given universal authority to complete the atonement, to establish everlasting righteousness and to bring human history to its consummation. This final phase of human history is described in Revelation 6, where, shortly after the Divine court session begins, the Lion/Lamb opens the seven seals one by one which end with the return of Christ. In Daniel 12, Michael, who is Christ, stands up at or near the start of this final judgment hour. The sounding of the trumpets and the outpouring of the plagues also begin during this time and all three - the seals, trumpets and plagues - run together to the second coming of Christ. Until now, most Seventh-day Adventists have believed that probation closes for everyone at the start of the seven last plagues and I respect that. But I also think it's a mistake that will result in a rude awakening for those who hold that view. So I spend quite a bit of time on that issue in this book quoting scripture and statements by Ellen White on the battle of Armageddon and others that show that the time of God's destructive judgments is a time of mercy for those who haven't had the opportunity to hear the truth but it will be too late for many. Probation will indeed have closed for some - the five unwise virgins. Most Adventists also believe the latter rain occurs before the plagues. However, the main part of the latter rain falls during the plagues. Revelation 16 teaches that probation remains open for many until the close of the battle of Armageddon. In addition to the quotes by Ellen White on Armageddon that are cited in the book, one indication probation hasn't closed during the plagues and during this final battle is that Christ Himself warns: "Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame." Rev 16:15. If it's possible to lose your wedding garment and be found naked, probation hasn't closed yet. This is also confirmed two verses later when the voice from the throne says "It is done". Rev. 16:17. That Divine pronouncement is the final close for everyone, but notice, it occurs at the end of the battle of Armageddon at the seventh plague. And so, this book is a warning of the swift coming judgments of the seals, trumpets and plagues that will confront humanity as an overwhelming surprise at the judgment of the living. It points to the prophecies that identify the start of that process and follows them through to the return of Christ.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Then the Lord God said, ‘Behold, the man has become like one of us in knowing good and evil. Now, lest he reach out his hand and take also of the tree of life and eat, and live forever’—therefore the Lord God sent him out from the garden of Eden to work the ground from which he was taken. He drove out the man, and at the east of the garden of Eden he placed the cherubim and a flaming sword that turned every way to guard the way to the tree of life.” From Genesis 3. We were shut out of the garden of Eden; lost the right to the tree of life; were cursed to painful toil (men); were cursed to painful childbearing (women); and became innately disobedient to the God who created us. The problem is serious, but the solution is wonderful. It centres on the person Jesus Christ, who will as the Bible describes redeem us from our fallen state and restore our right to the tree of life – and to eternal life. This book unpacks what the Old and New Testaments say about God’s day of salvation.
