He could almost remember verbatim his answer: "No, Gnut has neither moved nor been moved since the death of his master. A special point was made of keeping him in the position he assumed at Klaatu's death. The floor was built in under him, and the scientists who completed his derangement erected their apparatus around him, just as he stands. You need have no fears." Cliff smiled again. He did not have any fears. A moment later the big gong above the entrance doors rang the closing hour, and immediately following it a voice from the speakers called out "Five o'clock, ladies and gentlemen. Closing time, ladies and gentlemen." The three scientists, as if surprised it was so late, hurriedly washed their hands, changed to their street clothes and disappeared down the partitioned corridor, oblivious of the young picture man hidden under the table. The slide and scrape of the feet on the exhibition floor rapidly dwindled, until at last there were only the steps of the two guards walkin We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Book excerpt: New York Times bestselling author Carol Edgarian delivers “an all-encompassing and enthralling” (Oprah Daily) novel featuring an unforgettable heroine coming of age in the aftermath of catastrophe, and her quest for love and reinvention. Meet Vera Johnson, fifteen-year-old illegitimate daughter of Rose, notorious proprietor of San Francisco’s most legendary bordello. Vera has grown up straddling two worlds—the madam’s alluring sphere, replete with tickets to the opera, surly henchmen, and scant morality, and the quiet domestic life of the family paid to raise her. On the morning of the great quake, Vera’s worlds collide. As the city burns and looters vie with the injured, orphaned, and starving, Vera and her guileless sister, Pie, are cast adrift. Disregarding societal norms and prejudices, Vera begins to imagine a new kind of life. She collaborates with Tan, her former rival, and forges an unlikely family of survivors, navigating through the disaster together. “A character-driven novel about family, power, and loyalty, (San Francisco Chronicle), Vera brings to life legendary characters—tenor Enrico Caruso, indicted mayor Eugene Schmitz and boss Abe Ruef, tabloid celebrity Alma Spreckels. This “brilliantly conceived and beautifully realized” (Booklist, starred review) tale of improbable outcomes and alliances takes hold from the first page, with remarkable scenes of devastation, renewal, and joy. Vera celebrates the audacious fortitude of its young heroine, who discovers an unexpected strength in unprecedented times.

This book was released on 2021-02-22 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nurses were putting in twelve-hour shifts now, day and night. Emily felt broken inside, dried out, not even capable of tears. They were short-staffed after a softly spoken Irish nurse, who'd only been with them for four days, had died from the deadly flu and two more had fallen ill. And more patients were coming in every hour, though the hospital beds were already full... 1918. Twenty-year-old Emily Burdon has been training as a nurse in London, learning on the job as she tends to patients from the crowded poorhouses that ring the hospital as well as wounded soldiers returning from the war. She pours her heart into her nursing while she waits for happier times - peace in Europe and the return of her childhood sweetheart Lewis from the Western Front. But when the deadly Spanish Flu arrives in London on the heels of the war, Emily's faith and courage are put to the test. All around her men and women in the prime of their lives are wasting away, and until a cure is found there is nothing for Emily and her colleagues to do except make them comfortable, treat them as best they can... and, eventually, ease the pain of their passing. But then Lewis catches the deadly flu himself on his way back home, just as a new doctor is transferred to head up Emily's ward. From the distant land of Prince Edward Island in Canada, Dr James Cantor is the first of a generations-old farming family to have left the island, and wartime London feels a long way away from the rugged beauty of his homeland. But despite their differences, he and Emily find common ground in their passion for helping patients and stopping the spread of the disease. But with life forever changed around her and Lewis' future hanging by a thread, can Emily survive the most terrible epidemic in the history with her life - and heart - intact? A heartbreaking historical novel based on true history - emotional and unforgettable. Perfect for fans of Jean Grainger, The Beantown Girls and Diney Costeloe. What readers are saying about Kate Eastham: 'I was completely glued to this book... I cried and I laughed... I would highly recommend this book - reminds me of Nadine Dorries' Nightingale stories but I preferred this one... Brilliant, entertaining and insightful.' Goodreads reviewer, 5 stars 'I felt a building of emotion and tears in my eyes. It still has the capacity to touch your heart and make you feel as if you are in the air with Jo and in the field hospital alongside Mac. The story is very real and will leave you with a sense of having lived through it as well.' Goodreads reviewer

Book excerpt: Kevin Skelton watched helplessly as a bomb ripped apart the life he knew. It was 15 August 1998, and the place was Omagh, in Northern Ireland. Kevin's wife Mena was one of the 29 people killed that day, and his daughter Shauna was horrifically injured. Kevin had lost the love of his life. He sank into the depths of despair after the bomb. At a time when his family needed him most, he turned to drink and self-loathing, often wishing he could have taken Mena's place that day. Before she died, she and Kevin had been bringing a young girl, Andreea, from a Romanian orphanage, for holidays to their home. In memory of Mena, Kevin decided to adopt Andreea, but on his first trip to Romania to start proceedings, he was shocked to discover that her mother, Maria, was still alive. In the most unlikely of circumstances, a love blossomed between them, convincing Kevin that Mena had sent Andreea and Maria to him so that he could find happiness again. He believes Mena has been a constant presence in the family's lives since her death, watching over them and protecting them. Sent by an Angel is a true story of love rising from the ashes of tragedy, a romance that reaches beyond the boundaries of this world.

Many nations are policed by law enforcement that do not carry guns, yet our police force depends upon guns as a frequently as we rely on introductions. This book explores what nourishes the perception of racism in our nation today, as well as defining where we are and identifying who the killers are. The author shares his real-life experience with rogue police officers who abused their powers, knowing they were breaking the law by using illegal police practices yet knowing the courts will back their version as they testily. The author minimized his loss by searching the Internet before appearing in court, learning valuable lessons, which he now shares in his account of the terrible day, November 27, 2014. Ignorance will get you put in prison with the other millions of innocent people who pled guilty so they could have a chance at a limited freedom later in life. Ignorance will see your children and family behind bars as the United States evolve into a police state, blaming the false existence of racism as the enemy.

Book Motown Encyclopedia

  • Author : Graham Betts
  • Publisher : AC Publishing
  • Release : 2014-06-02
  • ISBN : 1311441549
  • Pages : 811 pages

Download or read book Motown Encyclopedia written by Graham Betts and published by AC Publishing. This book was released on 2014-06-02 with total page 811 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Motown means different things to different people. The mere mention of perhaps the most iconic record label in history is often enough to invoke memories and mental images of Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder, The Temptations, The Jackson 5, The Supremes and numerous others. With each group recalled, there is an accompanying piece of music of the mind, from Baby Love, My Girl, Signed Sealed Delivered, I Heard It Through The Grapevine, ABC and Tears Of A Clown and countless more. Quite often, you can ask people what kind of music they like and they will simply answer ‘Motown’, and both they, and you, know exactly what is meant. Or rather, what is implied. The Motown they are invariably thinking of is the label that dominated the charts in the mid 1960s with a succession of radio friendly, dance orientated hits, most of which were written and produced by the trio of Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier and Eddie Holland. This period is referred to, naturally enough, as the Golden Era, when Motown was not only the dominant force in its home city of Detroit but carried The Sound of Young America all around the world. The kind of music that had them Dancing In the Street from Los Angeles to London, Miami to Munich and San Francisco to Sydney. It was the kind of music that attracted scores of imitators; some good, some not so good. The kind of music that appealed to the public and presidents alike, and still does. It was that Motown that this book was intended to be about. However, when you start digging deeper into the Motown story, you realise that throughout its life (which, for the purposes of this book, is its formation in 1959 through to its sale in 1988) it was constantly trying other musical genres, looking to grab hits out of jazz, country, pop, rock, middle of the road and whatever else might be happening at the time. Of course it wasn’t particularly successful at some of the other genres, although those who claim Motown never did much in the rock market conveniently overlook the healthy sales figures achieved by Rare Earth, the group, and focus instead on the total sales achieved on Rare Earth, the label. This book, therefore, contains biographies of all 684 artists who had releases on Motown and their various imprints, as well as biographies of 16 musicians, 23 producers, 19 writers and 13 executives. There are also details of the 50 or so labels that Motown owned, licensed to or licensed from. All nine films and the 17 soundtracks are also featured. Every Motown single and album and EP that made the Top Ten of the pop charts in either the US or UK also have their own entries, with 222 singles, 84 albums and five EPs being featured. Finally, there are 36 other entries, covering such topics as the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the Motortown Revues, Grammy Awards and the most played Motown songs on radio. The 1,178 entries cover every aspect of Motown and more – of the link between Granny in The Beverly Hillbillies and Wonder Woman, of the artists from Abbey Tavern Singers to Zulema, and the hits from ABC to You Really Got A Hold On Me. The Motown Encyclopedia is the story of Motown Records; Yesterday, Today, Forever.
