The commentary focuses primarily on the Markan understanding of the Jesus traditions as reflected in this key New Testament book. For each section in Mark, the author analyzes how it fits the immediate and larger context of the Gospel; offers verse-by-verse comments on the words, phrases, sentences, and themes found in the section; and explores what Mark is seeking to teach. As with all BECNT volumes, Mark features the author's detailed interaction with the Greek text. It combines academic sophistication with pastoral sensitivity and accessibility to serve as a useful tool for pastors, church leaders, students, and teachers.

Excerpt: ... more wonderful: but that it should be made capable of receiving and sustaining the life of God, of having his mind, and of working his works, is a thing which passeth understanding, being in very deed the mighty power of God. The great account which is made of the resurrection of Christ, in all the Scriptures, as " the exceeding greatness of God's mighty working" (Eph. i.), and of the baptism of the Holy Ghost, which is the first-fruits thereof--called " the power from on high," as if nothing else were worthy of that name--do prove how much more vast is this than every other manifestation of Godhead unto men. To make this erroneous mind of ours capable of discerning truth infallibly, to make this trembling and stammering lip capable of uttering words before which death and the grave and the devil stand discovered and dismantled, to make this fearful heart capable of confidence in the face of all ungodly confederations, and this palsied hand to strengthen with all the power of God--these are things which far surpass the speculation, and almost the belief, of man. And had we not seen it accomplished in the feebleness of Jesus Christ, who calleth himself " a worm, and no man," we should not have believed it possible to be done in mortal man: and had we not the assurance of Him who is the Truth, that the like works, and greater, were to be done in them who believe, we should have thought it a very wonderful thing, done once, upon an extraordinary occasion, for an extraordinary end, by one who was an extraordinary person, God as well as man, and never to be renewed again: but having his word and the facts of all the Apostolical history for it, we believe, as we have written, that this is the third and highest sphere of God's operation in man, ...

Book Preaching Mark s Gospel

Download or read book Preaching Mark s Gospel written by Richard A. Jensen and published by CSS Publishing. This book was released on 1996 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a classic case of failing to see the forest for the trees, Jensen, a homiletics professor and author of two works on narrative preaching, says that preachers tend to analyze biblical books to glean the slightest bits of exegetical data, yet miss the thrust of the overarching story they try to convey. Jensen contends that preachers get too caught up in an analytical, left-brained mentality that obscures the power and meaning of the good news story. In these pages Jensen helps us approach Mark's gospel with eyes wide open rather than with microscope in hand. He treats Mark's gospel as a narrative whole and challenges preachers to tell the gospel's story to their congregations. In doing so, Jensen emphasizes the strength of biblical stories. He says that these stories are powerful in and of themselves and that they work without much explanatory help. The problem is that listeners never hear the entire story because it's always told to them in bits and pieces. Jensen's adaptation of what Robert Alter (author of The Art of Biblical Narrative) calls narrative analogy assumes that "... parallel acts or situations are used to comment on each other in biblical narrative." In other words, if Mark told story "B" to flesh out the reality of story "A," then perhaps preachers today can do the same thing in their preaching. Students of Jensen have enthusiastically embraced this approach: "This is great, we never get to hear them (stories) whole " How did it ever occur to us that we could improve on the story of the Prodigal Son, for example, by reducing it to ideas? Richard A. Jensen teaches homiletics at Wartburg Seminary in Dubuque, Iowa, and Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago. He is best known for his ten-year stint as preacher for the national radio program Lutheran Vespers. He has also produced a television series titled Reflections and one titled Rhapsody.

Book Christ in the Passover Christ in the Feast of Pentecost Christ in the Feast of Tabernacles Set

This book was released on 2008-02-01 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This package includes the complete three-volume set of the Christ in the Feasts series: Christ in the Passover, Christ in the Feast of Pentecost, and Christ in the Feast of Tabernacles. In Christ in the Passover, Ceil and Moishe Rosen explore the meaning behind the different elements of the feast such as the bitter herbs, salty water, a sweet apple mixture, and the shankbone of a lamb. This book invites you to enter the celebration of Passover, rich with history and significance for both Jew and Gentile. God wasn't finished working in the lives of His people after the waters of the Red Sea parted. Both past and future deliverance are celebrated in this solemn and joyful feast. Through Christ in the Passover, you’ll trace God’s involvement through the history of this holy day—from the first Passover, all the way to the modern Seder. And in the revised editions of this inviting book, the authors show you how the death and resurrection of Jesus the Messiah are forever interwoven with the Passover and its symbolism. In Christ in the Feast of Pentecost, this engrossing book will quickly capture your attention as you realize the excitement leading up to this festive occasion and the richness it will bring to your understanding of both the Old and New Testament references. The authors treat us to the sense of anticipation that "cannot be overstated" as their insightful account of traditions leading up to this holiday unfolds...a boy's first haircut, bonfires, sweet treats, artful paper cutting, firstfruits. Shavnot will lead believers in Jesus into greater understanding of the significance of the omer, the waiting period, which foreshadows our watching for His return and gives further meaning to our work of building His kingdom. In Christ in the Feast of Tabernacles, David Brickner will captivate you with the rich imagery of this great festival. From the feast's origins of being celebrated with temporary shelters to modern-day observances--and even its meaning for heaven--you'll be enriched by this fascinating account.
