But a surprise offer to interrogate the man whom he holds accountable for his father's death could change everything. Garett Soness is less than enthusiastic about having a MAKO-6 agent on board the Sacramento– especially when that agent is Terik Donato. But for a space vessel past her prime, the agent's arrival is just the first of several unwelcome developments. When both a terrorist attack and a bizarre anomaly catch the skeleton crew off guard, the surviving crew members of the Sacramento find themselves halfway across the galaxy, stranded on a planet where humans are not as alien as the crew would think. Their stay may be brief, as a brutal species seeks to enslave all in its path and kill those that resist. Terik Donato and Garett Soness will find themselves tested in the face of death, forced to become the men they were meant to be – or the monsters they always feared they were. Survival takes its toll in this first chapter of The Dawn Cluster.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: They escaped planetary annihilation, helped end a centuries old civil war, and joined a defeated militia to their cause. Terik Donato and Melina Beetary’s chances of bringing down the oppressive Fokot army were prospering until a cunning betrayal and a lone shot ripped apart their coalition. But as relics of the past begin to appear, transforming despair into determination, Terik and Melina now have a plan to engage the Fokot in all-out war. To stand a fighting chance they will need to rely on the only thing they have left: their resolve. The hardest task Terik and Melina must face is letting go – of each other, of their past, and any chance of saving Garett Soness. Because all fates lead to the planet Opus, and its caretakers, the last Azonka Mah, who may be the key to the Sacramento crew getting home. It may also be the key to many of Terik’s questions, as well as the key to Warlord Favan’s endgame, ultimately positioning Opus to be either the crux of their triumph or the catalyst of their defeat. All questions will be answered in this final volume of The Dawn Cluster.

Book excerpt: Astronomers have successfully observed a great deal of the Universe's history, from recording the afterglow of the Big Bang to imaging thousands of galaxies, and even to visualising an actual black hole. There's a lot for astronomers to be smug about. But when it comes to understanding how the Universe began and grew up we are literally in the dark ages. In effect, we are missing the first one billion years from the timeline of the Universe. This brief but far-reaching period in the Universe's history, known to astrophysicists as the 'Epoch of Reionisation', represents the start of the cosmos as we experience it today. The time when the very first stars burst into life, when darkness gave way to light. After hundreds of millions of years of dark, uneventful expansion, one by the one these stars suddenly came into being. This was the point at which the chaos of the Big Bang first began to yield to the order of galaxies, black holes and stars, kick-starting the pathway to planets, to comets, to moons, and to life itself. Incorporating the very latest research into this branch of astrophysics, this book sheds light on this time of darkness, telling the story of these first stars, hundreds of times the size of the Sun and a million times brighter, lonely giants that lived fast and died young in powerful explosions that seeded the Universe with the heavy elements that we are made of. Emma Chapman tells us how these stars formed, why they were so unusual, and what they can teach us about the Universe today. She also offers a first-hand look at the immense telescopes about to come on line to peer into the past, searching for the echoes and footprints of these stars, to take this period in the Universe's history from the realm of theoretical physics towards the wonder of observational astronomy.

Book excerpt: The epic tale that began in People of the Longhouse continues in this second book of the thrilling new Iroquois quartet by New York Times and USA Today bestselling authors and archaeologists Kathleen O'Neal Gear and W. Michael Gear. War Chief Koracoo and Deputy Gonda of the Standing Stone People have successfully rescued their children, Odion and Tutelo, from Gannajero the Trader. Known as the Crow, Gannajero is a figure out of nightmare—a witch who steals children. Odion's friend Wrass is still held captive, along with several other children, in Gannajero's camp, and Koracoo and Gonda are determined to save them all. This time, Koracoo and Gonda have allies: a battle-weary Mohawk war chief and a Healer from the People of the Dawnland, who have also lost children to Gannajero. These bitter enemies must learn to trust each other and find common ground. Will they be able to put their differences aside and rescue the children before they are sold and carried off to distant villages—and lost to their families and homes forever? With their trademark mastery of American prehistory, Kathleen and Michael Gear tell a very human story of love and courage set against the backdrop of violent and endemic warfare of the Iroquois nations prior to the founding of the League of the Iroquois. Book Norm Clusters of Non State Armed Groups

Download or read book Norm Clusters of Non State Armed Groups written by Will Jamison Wright and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2024-01-02 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The proliferation of non-state armed groups and non-international armed conflicts since the end of the Second World War has challenged the legal frameworks which govern conduct in armed conflict. While aspects of international humanitarian law apply to such conflicts, international law can only go part of the way to explaining behaviour by armed groups. This book seeks to refocus discussion on the limits to armed conflict in such settings by examining the norms that underpin international humanitarian law as espoused by these armed groups to give a clearer picture as to the collectively constructed appropriateness of certain behaviours in or limits to warfare. The specific research question is “What are the norms of armed conflict as identified by non-state armed groups?” Using Winston’s norm cluster model, this study seeks to examine and map the ideations and behavioural prescriptions that constitute the armed conflict norm cluster as defined by non-state armed groups. To do this, it utilises a qualitative content analysis of documents from non-state armed groups coded to identify the different elements of this norm cluster as well as the frequency, pervasiveness, and connections between these elements. The findings showed that, while international humanitarian law is universal, these norms limiting armed conflict are not, with no norm being seen across all contexts examined. Core norms of international humanitarian law, especially those supported by norm entrepreneurs, were seen to be the focus of sub-clusters and the emergence of new parts of the norm cluster could be observed over time. The findings suggest that further work with the conceptualisation of limits to armed conflict as norms could be useful in improving the embeddedness of norms amongst non-state armed groups and could be useful in reconceptualising limits to armed conflict in cases where broadly accepted norms face growing contestation.

Book Dawn s Gray Steel

Download or read book Dawn s Gray Steel written by Daniel F. Korn and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2007-03-05 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has been many novels written about the Civil War in the East. Now Dan Korn brings to life the incredible story of the western theater's first major battle, the titantic struggle between two massive ill-prepared armies as they met on the shore of the mighty Tennessee River at a lazy riverboat landing called Pittsburg Landing. Nestled in a glen not far from the water's edge was a sleepy house of worship, named Shiloh Meetinghouse. Shiloh means "place of peace." After the events of early April, 1862, Americans would never think of peace when they heard the name Shiloh ever again. As Dawn's Gray Steel opens, the South is reeling over the recent twin losses of the Tennessee forts Henry and Donelson, and the taking of the Tennessee capital, Nashville, by the thus far victorious western armies of the North. These victories have given the North a new hero in the form of a quiet and unassuming leader, Ulysses S. Grant. To the North, Grant has become "Unconditional Surrender " Grant. To end the string of Yankee victories, the Confederacy turns to the quixotic and charismatic Albert Sidney Johnston, a man some consider to be the greatest soldier in the Confederacy, and the man Jefferson Davis entrusts to save the Confederacy in the West. It will become Johnston's mission to end Grant's run. Victory has brought Grant fame, and with that fame comes a certain relaxed feeling in Grant that allows him to place his still relatively inexperienced Army of the Tennessee into camp along the Tennessee without taking many defensive precautions. It is this relaxed atmosphere that causes deep anxiety in one of Grant's newest division commanders, the cigar-chomping, wild-eyed William Tecumseh Sherman. Grant assures his new subordinate that Johnston would be crazy to attack the Union Army where they are. It is a mistake that Johnston is determined to make Grant regret. Johnston refuses to heed the advice of his own subordinates and decides to launch an all out attack against the still unsuspecting Union camp. Against all odds the attack will be almost a complete surprise, stunning the unsuspecting Union forces with its ferocity. The bewildered Yankees fight back with pluck and equal determination but the Confederate forces will be on the verge of a stunning victory, when fate and the incredible stubbornness of one man intervenes. It will be here at Shiloh that Johnston will bet his life and roll the "iron dice" of battle in one magnificent gamble. In the smoke-filled swamps and ravines along the Tennessee, Sherman will be forced to finally face his fears, and find a joy in the depth of his abilities he never knew existed. And it will be here, in the incredible maelstrom that roars about him, that Grant will demonstrate for all to see an amazingly unflappable coolness, a coolness that will allow him to see what no other man sees that day, and enable him to snatch an incredible victory from almost certain defeat. It will be an amazing ability that will help propel him down the path to unprecedented glory, respect, and eventually, the trust of his President. A trust that will eventually bring Grant to the East, and an inevitable meeting with Robert E. Lee

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Daniel Prentice's technological skill helped save the world from the deadly impact of Y2K in the popular thriller Flee the Darkness. But that victory didn't stop the encroaching evil. In this gripping sequel, tension mounts in the 21st century as a Russion-Arab invasion of Jerusalem seems imminent. Now Daniel must guide NSA chief Captain Michael Reed in the battle ahead. More than a battle for the land, the offensive could be the fulfillment of Ezekiel's ancient biblical prophecy of Gog and Magog invading Israel. As the world shudders in response, the invaders offer Israel a choice: surrender or be obliterated. As the State of Israel fortifies itself against the coming onslaught of missiles, biological weapons, and an invasion force attacking from all four borders, Reed and his Israeli counterpart, Sergeant Major Devorah Cohen, exhaust every military resource to prevent a nuclear war. Soon Reed and Cohen realize that the real battle they face is one of spiritual origin-for which no military drill could prepare them. Will Michael and Deborah find faith to confront the enemy? Never have the forces of evil been stronger, the stakes higher, or the world's possible destruction nearer than By Dawn's Early Light.

Book excerpt: This, the first full-length biography of Edward Emerson Barnard, tells the remarkable tale of endurance and achievement of one of the leading astronomers of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Through his career, Barnard scoured the heavens endlessly, leaving an astonishing legacy of observations - of planets, satellites, comets, double stars, bright and dark nebulae, and globular clusters - that make him one of the greatest observers of all time.Beautifully illustrated throughout, this book includes many of Barnard's famous wide-field photographs of comets and the Milky Way. It provides a complete history of Barnard's fascinating life and work, and offers unusual insight into the astronomers he knew and observatories with which he was associated and will be of interest to astronomers and historians of science.
