Book excerpt: The compelling and disturbing true story of Vanessa George and the evil abuse she doled out upon the children of more than 300 families. As a nursery worker, wife and mother, she was a figure to place trust in. Yet her adulterous relationship and sick love triangle with Colin Blanchard and Angela Allen drew her into a dark world of violence and sexual abuse. To compete for Blanchard's attention she would do everything in her power to impress him, even if this meant committing unspeakable acts of sexual violence on children as young as two years old. What could have driven a mother to betray not only her daughters and loving husband, but the very families who entrusted her with their children? How could a seemingly caring women become engaged in a sordid and vile love triangle with a man and woman she had never met? Were there events in her own childhood that pushed her to commit these acts? True crime expert Wensley Clarkson pieces together the events surrounding the case as well as new investigative research to compile a fascinating yet disturbing account of a case which shocked a nation. We may never know the full extent of Vanessa George's cruelty, but the horror of her story will remain as a chilling memory for generations.

Book Vanessa Bell

Download or read book Vanessa Bell written by Frances Spalding and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-04-01 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The definitive and authorised biography of the artist Vanessa Bell. Even through the lens of the twenty-first century, the story of Vanessa Bell's life is unorthodox. A powerful magnetic figure, Bell lived at the heart of the Bloomsbury Group and was often the core figure around which the disparate individuals of the movement revolved. Her art and designs – so often overshadowed by her sister Virginia Woolf's writings and fame and by the interest in her own unconventional life – made a significant contribution to the history of the Bloomsbury Group. Yet, until this authorised biography was written, she has remained a largely silent and enigmatic figure. In this captivating account, acclaimed art historian and biographer Frances Spalding restores Bell to the heart of the Bloomsbury Group, illuminating an exceptional life and the free-spirited circle among which she lived.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The psyche of Jacob Brougham, insofar as it concerns women, has been deeply affected by a certain type of characteristics seemingly possessed by each of his three grandmothers and his own mother (all of whom he loves and respects and mistrusts) and the wife of his favorite primary school teacher. He and Shirley Wilson, growing up in one of Tobago's numerous tiny littoral villages, at a relatively tender age, become lovers. Shirley is younger than he is, and he is at once delighted and alarmed at the skill and experience she displays. He asks her about it and discovers that it is a gift of her primary school teacher (a man who would, in time, rise to the heights of headmaster and senior member of the church board). She is open and honest about her sexual grooming, and even accepts it as a wrong done to her, but she is strangely forgiving of the man. This latter response troubles Jacob deeply. Still, he bears in mind that in the village – where sex and religion are the vital forces, but sex is never spoken of – he, too, has been groomed. More, Shirley must certainly know he has been groomed – and by whom! As hard as that would be, he must try not to be squeamish. As their relationship grows, Jacob finds that, whatever shortcomings Shirley may have, she is not devious–a characteristic with which his mind has come, willy–nilly, liberally to endow all women. To make matters worse for his head, she has proved to be loyal, trustworthy, loving, and industrious. Yet it is Shirley's pregnancy that settles matters. In its infancy, the marriage is, however, ruined before it can get time to find its feet. Even she, while professing her undying love for him, stoically agrees that the divorce is inevitable. Still, in a vow there and then whispered to herself, she determines that their next marriage will be a proper and well–planned one and will happen in a church. And Shirley keeps her vow.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New York Times Notable Book • An Entertainment Weekly “Must List” Pick • “Prepare to be dazzled.”—Paula McLain • “Quite simply astonishing.”—Sarah Blake What if Virginia Woolf’s sister had kept a diary? For fans of The Paris Wife and Loving Frank comes a spellbinding new story of the inseparable bond between Virginia and her sister, the gifted painter Vanessa Bell, and the real-life betrayal that threatened to destroy their family. Hailed by The New York Times Book Review as “an uncanny success” and based on meticulous research, this stunning novel illuminates a little-known episode in the celebrated sisters’ glittering bohemian youth among the legendary Bloomsbury Group. Find your next book club pick, read special features, and more. Join the Random House Reader’s Circle. London, 1905: The city is alight with change, and the Stephen siblings are at the forefront. Vanessa, Virginia, Thoby, and Adrian are leaving behind their childhood home and taking a house in the leafy heart of avant-garde Bloomsbury. There they bring together a glittering circle of bright, outrageous artistic friends who will grow into legend and come to be known as the Bloomsbury Group. And at the center of this charmed circle are the devoted, gifted sisters: Vanessa, the painter, and Virginia, the writer. Each member of the group will go on to earn fame and success, but so far Vanessa Bell has never sold a painting. Virginia Woolf’s book review has just been turned down by The Times. Lytton Strachey has not published anything. E. M. Forster has finished his first novel but does not like the title. Leonard Woolf is still a civil servant in Ceylon, and John Maynard Keynes is looking for a job. Together, this sparkling coterie of artists and intellectuals throw away convention and embrace the wild freedom of being young, single bohemians in London. But the landscape shifts when Vanessa unexpectedly falls in love and her sister feels dangerously abandoned. Eerily possessive, charismatic, manipulative, and brilliant, Virginia has always lived in the shelter of Vanessa’s constant attention and encouragement. Without it, she careens toward self-destruction and madness. As tragedy and betrayal threaten to destroy the family, Vanessa must decide if it is finally time to protect her own happiness above all else. The work of exciting young newcomer Priya Parmar, Vanessa and Her Sister exquisitely captures the champagne-heady days of prewar London and the extraordinary lives of sisters Vanessa Bell and Virginia Woolf. Praise for Vanessa and Her Sister “Fiction and history merge seamlessly in this dazzling novel.”—Entertainment Weekly “Being related to Virginia Woolf can’t have been easy. In this delightful novel, Parmar re-imagines the brilliant, fragile writer and her turn-of-the-century bohemian friends. . . . You’ll be spellbound.”—People “Rarely do you encounter a woman who commands as much admiration as does the painter Vanessa Bell in Priya Parmar’s multilayered, subtly shaded novel.”—The New York Times Book Review “[A] gossipy, entertaining historical novel . . . Parmar conjures a devastating fictional portrait.”—USA Today “Captivating . . . echoes of Austen’s Sense and Sensibility emerge in Parmar’s portrayal.”—Newsday “An elegant, entertaining novel that brings new life to the Bloomsbury Group’s intrigues.”—The Dallas Morning News

Book Margaret Laurence

Download or read book Margaret Laurence written by Donez Xiques and published by Dundurn. This book was released on 2005-09-24 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Margaret Laurence: The Making of a Writer is an engaging narrative that contains new and important findings about Laurence's life and career. This biography reveals the challenges, successes, and failures of the long apprenticeship that preceded the publication of the The Stone Angel, Laurence's first commercially successful novel. Donez Xiques demonstrates the importance of Margaret Laurence's early work as a journalist in her development as a writer and covers her return to Canada from Africa in the late 1950s. She details the significance of Laurence's "Vancouver years" as well as the challenges of her year in London prior to settling at Elm Cottage in Buckinghamshire, when Laurence stood on the verge of success. The Margaret Laurence known to most people is a public figure of the 1960s and 1970s; matriarchal, matronly, and accomplished. The story of her early years in the harsh setting of the Canadian Prairies during the 1930s - years of drought and the Great Depression - and of her African years has never before been chronicled with the thoroughness and vividness that Xiques provides for the reader. Appended to this powerful new biography is a short story by Margaret Laurence that has never before been published and two other stories that have not been widely available. They indicate the range of her concerns and show a marked departure from her fiction in The Tomorrow-Tamer and Other Stories and A Bird in the House. Readers will benefit from the extensive research in this full and vibrant portrait of one of the most revered writers of twentieth-century Canadian literature.
