Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Mr. Spencer's Data of Ethics Evidently of the highest importance in a system of philosophy conceived in the manner in which Mr. Spencer presents it, this point of transition between the inorganic and the organic with its dependent histories is of the very deepest fundamental interest, and upon the question whether it is well or badly treated depends the practical value of his philosophy as applied to. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Data of Ethics A reference to the programmo of the "System of Synthetic Philosophy," will show that the chapters herewith issued, constitute the first division of the work on the Principles of Morality, with which the System ends. As the second and third volumes of the Principles of Sociology are as yet unpublished, this instalment of the succeeding work appears out of its place. I have been led thus to deviate from the order originally set down, by the fear that persistence in conforming to it might result in leaving tho final work of the series unexecuted. Hints, repeated of late years with increasing frequency and distinctness, have shown mo that health may permanently fail, even if life docs not end, before I reach the last part of the task I have marked out for myself. This last part of the task it is, to which I regard all the preceding parts as subsidiary. Written as far back as 1812, my first essay, consisting of letters on The Proper Sphere of Government, vaguely indicated what I conceived to be certain general principles of right and wrong in political conduct; and from that time onwards my ultimate purpose, lying behind all proximate purposes, has been that of finding for the principles of right and wrong in conduct at large, a scientific basis. To leave this purpose unfulfilled after making so extensive a preparation for fulfilling it, would be a failure the probability of which I do not like to contemplate; and I am anxious to preclude it, if not wholly, still partially. Hence the step I now take. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Science of Ethics Vol 1

Download or read book The Science of Ethics Vol 1 written by Michael Cronin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 678 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Science of Ethics, Vol. 1: General Ethics Of modern Scholastic writers the author is most in debted to Professors Meyer and Cathrein, to Rev. Joseph Rickaby, Taparelli, Schififini, and Rev. Dr. Walter mcdonald, Maynooth College, whose treatises on Ethics have been of immense help to him in the preparation of his work. His most grateful thanks are due to the Rev. John Waters, b.a., of Clonliffe College, for his kindness in reading this book, and for very many valuable criticisms and suggestions. Father Waters' wide and minute acquaintance with the writings of St. Thomas Aquinas was always at the author's disposal in the difficult task of discovering and comparing the various references made by St. Thomas to any special Ethical question, references often occurring in places very wide apart, and under unpromising titles - titles apparently outside the, subject under discussion. Thanks are also due to those gentlemen who so kindly undertook the tedious and un interesting task of proof-reading, and to many others also for help given of various kinds. Download or read book On Mr Spencer s Data of Ethics written by Malcolm Guthrie and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-13 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Mr. Spencer's Data of Ethics This volume completes the critical examination of Mr. Spencer's system of Philosophy already pursued through two previous volumes entitled respectively "On Mr. Spencer's Formula of Evolution," and "On Mr. Spencer's Unification of Knowledge." The entire task has been undertaken by a student for the use of students. It cannot be of much use to the general reader, as it presumes and indeed requires a very intimate knowledge of Mr. Spencer's works. For those who do not wish to enter into detailed examination perhaps Chapter I. of the "Unification of Knowledge" will afford a good epitome of the line of criticism; and this may be followed, if desired, by a perusal of the "Formula of Evolution." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Facts and Values: Studies in Ethical Analysis When people disagree about the value of something - one saying that it is good or right and another that it is bad or wrong - by what methods of argument or inquiry can their disagreement be resolved 1 Can it be resolved by the methods of science, or does it require methods of some other kind, or is it open to no rational solution at all? The question must be clarified before it can be answered. And the word that is particularly in need of clarification, as we shall see, is the word disagreement. Let us begin by noting that disagreement has two broad senses In the first sense it refers to what I shall call disagreement in belief. This occurs when Mr. A believes p, when Mr. B believes not-p, or something incompatible with p, and when neither is content to let the belief of the other remain unchallenged. Thus doctors may dis agree in belief about the causes of an illness; and friends may disagree in belief about the exact date on which they last met. Book The Data of Modern Ethics Examined

Download or read book The Data of Modern Ethics Examined written by John Joseph Ming and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Data of Modern Ethics Examined A crisis in morals has come to pass in our days. The teachings not only of Christian revelation, but also of the philosophy underlying it, are set aside as having become no less obsolete than the mediæval views of the material universe. The very foundations of the moral system, which for nearly twenty centuries has been held in the highest honor, seem to have been shattered. The revolution has not been brought about, however, with the avowed purpose of overthrowing morality itself. Instead of the old theories, new ones have been broached, to advance it to greater perfection than it has ever reached before. A new basis has been laid, on which it is expected to rise with grandeur more astonishing, and new principles have been adopted, which, it is said, will reduce it to better harmony with reason and make it productive of greater and more general happiness. Can we reasonably compare the crisis in the science of morals to that which has taken place in the science of nature? Are the new ethical tenets in moral philosophy what the system invented by Copernicus and the laws of gravitation discovered by Newton are in astronomy? Thinking men, in answering these questions, will not allow themselves to be carried away by the current of the age. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Constructive Ethics: A Review of Modern Moral Philosophy in Its Three Stages of Interpretation, Criticism, and Reconstruction As I tried to explain in the preface to the first edition of this book, my object in writing these pages is to give my readers an Introduction to what I conceive to be the proper and final form of Moral Philosophy - a system of Constructive Ethics. It was necessary to my purpose to show that the history of Moral Philosophy itself invites a reconstruction on the lines of that particular theory of ethical data which I have called indifferently Rationalism or Idealism. To this system, so far as I can read the phenomena, the early interpretative systems, as well as the critical systems of a crude and disappointing Utilitarianism, appear to be preliminary. If I am right in supposing that the progress of thought is a gradual transition from an ambitious and. Premature attempt to decipher ethical facts through a period of criticism, to a reconstruction of morals on a metaphysical and indeed an ontological basis, then it would seem clear that the ethics of the future, whatever other features they may contain, need not be merely interpretative.
