Book Pastoral Australia

    Book Details:
  • Author : Michael Pearson
  • Publisher : CSIRO PUBLISHING
  • Release : 2010-04-27
  • ISBN : 0643102132
  • Pages : 227 pages

Download or read book Pastoral Australia written by Michael Pearson and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2010-04-27 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pastoral Australia tells the story of the expansion of Australia's pastoral industry, how it drove European settlement and involved Aboriginal people in the new settler society. The rural life that once saw Australia 'ride on the sheep's back' is no longer what defines us, yet it is largely our history as a pastoral nation that has endured in heritage places and which is embedded in our self-image as Australians. The challenges of sustaining a pastoral industry in Australia make a compelling story of their own. Developing livestock breeds able to prosper in the Australian environment was an ongoing challenge, as was getting wool and meat to market. Many stock routes, wool stores, abattoirs, wharf facilities, railways, roads, and river and ocean transport systems that were developed to link the pastoral interior with the urban and market infrastructure still survive. Windmills, fences, homesteads, shearing sheds, bores, stock yards, travelling stock routes, bush roads and railheads all changed the look of the country. These features of our landscape form an important part of our heritage. They are symbols of a pastoral Australia, and of the foundations of our national identity, which will endure long into the future.

Charles’ story draws in many threads: the cruelty of the convict system, the elegance of Adelaide City’s foundations, the copper boom in South Australia, the goldfields of Tibooburra and the wheat fields of Ungarie, the long working hours of shop assistants and the uncertainty of business enterprises, the isolation and humour of country living, the tragedy of two World Wars and its impact on ordinary Australians. Charles’ own writings show a mind always seeking improvements, a lively sense of humour with an ability to revel in politics and open discussion and the sheer joie de vivre characterising his long life.

Book Fictions of Western American Domesticity

Download or read book Fictions of Western American Domesticity written by Amanda Jane Zink and published by University of New Mexico Press. This book was released on 2018 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work provides a compelling explanation of something that has bedeviled a number of feminist scholars: Why did popular authors like Edna Ferber continue to write conventional fiction while living lives that were far from conventional? Amanda J. Zink argues that white writers like Ferber and Willa Cather avoided the subject of their own domestic labor by writing about the performance of domestic labor by "others," showing that American print culture, both in novels and through advertisements, moved away from portraying women as angels in the house and instead sought to persuade other women to be angels in their houses. Zink further explores lesser-known works such as Mexican American cookbooks and essays in Indian boarding school magazines to show how women writers "dialoging domesticity" exemplify the cross-cultural encounters between "colonial domesticity" and "sovereign domesticity." By situating these interpretations of literature within their historical contexts, Zink shows how these writers championed and challenged the ideology of domesticity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first European chroniclers of Indigenous Culture in Australia looked for the sensational, often neglecting its more significant features. In his fourth book on Queensland’s early history, J. G. Steele corrects this imbalance with a detailed account of the Indigenous people of the subtropical coast at the time of their earliest contact with white settlers. The region described is centred on Brisbane, extending along the coast to Fraser Island, to Evens Head in New South Wales, and inland to the Great Dividing Range. Drawing on early accounts, photographs, place-names, languages, legends, archeology, and museum collections, Aboriginal Pathways provides a wealth of fascinating and important material, much of it relevant to debates on Indigenous land rights and sacred sites of the 1980s.

Book China Only Yesterday 1850 1950

Download or read book China Only Yesterday 1850 1950 written by Emily Hahn and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2015-07-28 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fascinating journey through 100 years of Chinese history, beginning with the historic Treaty of Nanking and ending with Mao Tse-tung’s creation of the Chinese People’s Republic, by the the acclaimed New Yorker correspondent who lived in China from 1935 to 1941 For centuries, China’s code of behavior was incomprehensible to Westerners whom the Chinese viewed as irredeemable barbarians. Presenting historical events with an immediacy that makes you feel as if you were there, Hahn takes readers through isolationist China’s difficult and often costly adaptations to the invasions of Western “foreign devils”, —from the Treaty of Nanking in 1842, which gave the West access to five 5 of China’s eastern ports, to the British colonization of Hong Kong, the rise of the tea trade, the Opium Wars, the arrival of Christian missionaries, and the Boxer Rebellion. Hahn also illuminates the revolutionary movement led by Sun Yat-sen, the overthrow of the Ch’ing Dynasty, the escalating tensions between the Communist and Nationalist parties, and the Japanese invasion on the eve of World War II—which Hahn witnessed firsthand. The final chapters cover the civil war, which ended with Chairman Mao’s formation of the People’s Republic of China and Chiang Kai-shek’s retreat to Taiwan. With an insider’s knowledge of Chinese culture and the politics, Hahn delivers a sharply observant book that illuminates an unforgettable era in China’s tumultuous past.

Book In Search of Steele Rudd

Download or read book In Search of Steele Rudd written by Richard Fotheringham and published by University of Queensland Press(Australia). This book was released on 1995 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1894 Arthur Hoey Davis, a young Brisbane public servant who dabbled in journalism, sat down to devise a nom de plume for his rowing column in the local newspaper. The by-line he chose was Steele Rudd. The Sydney Bulletin began to publish his stories in 1895 and four years later his first book, On Our Selection, appeared. A comic writer of genius, he became Queensland's best known and most popular writer. His works were as widely read as those of Henry Lawson, Banjo Paterson and C. J. Dennis. The man behind the Rudd legend, however, has been largely hidden for over a century. Richard Fotheringham's biography provides startling new insights into Steele Rudd's life: about his determination to earn his living as a writer after his career in the public service came to an end, his troubled marriage, the poverty of his last years and, after his death in 1935, the appropriation of his work as Dad and Dave on radio and film, in cartoons and jokes.
