Book The Dark Side of Humanity

Download or read book The Dark Side of Humanity written by Robert Parkin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-10-12 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Parkin's book gives a reading of each of these texts before going on to show their subsequent influence on anthropologists in particular. Hertz's activities as reviewer and phamphleteer are also covered. The introductory biographical chapter drawing on Hertz's surviving papers in the Collège de France, shows his own ambivalence towards his academic career and it also attempts to clarify the circumstances leading up to his apparently gratuitous death in the First World War. Two further chapters attempt to situate his work in the broader context of Durkheimian sociology.

Book The Dark Side of European Integration

Download or read book The Dark Side of European Integration written by Alina Polyakova and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2015-08-01 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Across Europe, radical right-wing parties are winning increasing electoral support. The Dark Side of European Integration argues that this rising nationalism and the mobilization of the radical right are the consequences of European economic integration. The European economic project has produced a cultural backlash in the form of nationalist radical right ideologies. This assessment relies on a detailed analysis of the electoral rise of radical right parties in Western and Eastern Europe. Contrary to popular belief, economic performance and immigration rates are not the only factors that determine the far right's success. There are other political and social factors that explain why in post-socialist Eastern European countries such parties had historically been weaker than their potential, which they have now started to fulfill increasingly. Using in-depth interviews with radical right activists in Ukraine, Alina Polyakova also explores how radical right mobilization works on the ground through social networks, allowing new insights into how social movements and political parties interact.

Book The Dark Side of Church State Separation

Download or read book The Dark Side of Church State Separation written by Stephen Strehle and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-08 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dark Side of Church/State Separation analyzes the Enlightenment's attack upon the Judeo-Christian tradition and its impact upon the development of secular regimes in France, Germany, and Russia. Such regimes followed the anti-Semitic/anti-Christian agenda of the French Enlightenment in blaming the Judeo-Christian tradition for all the ills of European society and believing that human beings can develop their own set of values and purposes through rational means, apart from any revelation from God or Scripture. Stephen Strehle's analysis extends our understanding of church/state relations and its history. He confirms the spiritual roots of modern anti-Semitism within the ideology of the Enlightenment and recognizes the intimate relationship between anti-Semitism and anti-Christianity. Strehle questions the absolute doctrine of church/state separation, given its background in the bigotries of the philosophes. He notes the nefarious motives of subsequent regimes, which used the French doctrine to replace the religious community with the state and its secular ideology. This detailed historical analysis of original sources and secondary literature is woven together with special appreciation for the philosophical and theological ideas that contributed to the emergence of political institutions. Readers will gain an understanding of the most influential ideas shaping the modern world and present-day culture.

Download or read book The Dark Side of Game Play written by Torill Elvira Mortensen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-06-05 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Games allow players to experiment and play with subject positions, values and moral choice. In game worlds players can take on the role of antagonists; they allow us to play with behaviour that would be offensive, illegal or immoral if it happened outside of the game sphere. While contemporary games have always handled certain problematic topics, such as war, disasters, human decay, post-apocalyptic futures, cruelty and betrayal, lately even the most playful of genres are introducing situations in which players are presented with difficult ethical and moral dilemmas. This volume is an investigation of "dark play" in video games, or game play with controversial themes as well as controversial play behaviour. It covers such questions as: Why do some games stir up political controversies? How do games invite, or even push players towards dark play through their design? Where are the boundaries for what can be presented in a games? Are these boundaries different from other media such as film and books, and if so why? What is the allure of dark play and why do players engage in these practices?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Could the great challenges of the world, and our lives, be solved through the wisdom of the past merged with the best science of today? The answer to this question is a resounding "Yes!" In Quantum Spirituality, Amit Goswami, PhD, and Valentina Onisor, MD, join forces to reveal precisely this connection and catapult us light years beyond conventional thinking when it comes to our capabilities, and our potential. In an intimate journey of easy-to-read science and true-life events, the authors demonstrate how the marriage of science and spirituality, and the cooperation of scientists and mystics, opens the door to a new world view. There’s something missing in the traditional human story. Only new thinking, based upon truthful, honest and factual discoveries that include direct human experience will reveal the potential of the new human story. Whether you’re an artist or an engineer, a homemaker or policy maker, this book is about you, your life, and every relationship that you’ll ever experience. This book should be required reading for everyone who has ever felt like there’s something missing in the mainstream view of us and what’s possible for us in the world.” — Gregg Braden, New York Times bestselling author of Human by Design and The Divine Matrix “Quantum Spirituality offers a brave attempt to unify the scientific and spiritual paths of existence. The authors point out that all too often we find ourselves in unhappy situations when we embark on one of the paths without considering the other—especially a problem in our separated scientific and current religious worldviews today. We need to take steps along both paths simultaneously—something that our quantum physics point of view explains how to do it.” —Fred Alan Wolf, PhD. (aka) Dr. Quantum, National Book Award Author of many books. Amit Goswami, PhD, featured in the widely seen "What the bleep do we know!?" and Valentina R. Onisor, MD, lauded for her Quantum healing and integration teachings, successfully demonstrate, using the latest paradigm of Quantum Science, that exploring the archetype of wholeness and integrating dichotomies are a quick and satisfactory path to spiritual enlightenment: quantum enlightenment. And Oh, yes: on this path you keep your authentic self to enjoy your enlightenment.

Book Narratives of Becoming Leaders in Disciplinary and Institutional Contexts

Download or read book Narratives of Becoming Leaders in Disciplinary and Institutional Contexts written by Anesa Hosein and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-12-29 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Narratives of Becoming Leaders in Disciplinary and Institutional Contexts provides theoretically informed personal narratives of nine emerging and established leaders in learning and teaching in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Trinidad and Tobago, the UK and the USA. The academics' narratives consider how individuals navigate the disciplinary and institutional context as emergent and established leaders in learning and teaching. These learning and teaching leadership narratives highlight the commonalities and differences in the struggles that academic leaders across the world encounter within their unique institutional and disciplinary contexts. The journeys of learning and teaching leadership are often fuzzy owing to lack of well-established structures and pathways which may be further complicated by the unique institutional and disciplinary contexts. This book contributes to our understanding of the impact of disciplinary and institutional contexts on the practice of learning and teaching leaders. It captures the subjective experiences of academics at various stages in their career, navigating their individual pathways of learning and teaching leadership within their national context.

Book Cinema of the Dark Side

Download or read book Cinema of the Dark Side written by Shohini Chaudhuri and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2014-11-17 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A ground-breaking comparative analysis of cinematic images of atrocity, combining critical perspectives on contemporary film and human rights.A few days after 9/11, US Vice-President Dick Cheney invoked the need for the USA to work 'the dark side' in its global 'War on Terror'. Cinema of the Dark Side explores how contemporary cinema treats state-sponsored atrocity, evoking multiple landscapes of state terror. Investigating the ethical potential of cinematic atrocity images, this book argues that while films help to create and confirm normative perceptions about atrocities, they can also disrupt those perceptions and build alternative ones. Asserting a crucial distinction between morality and ethics, it proposes a new conceptualisation of human rights cinema, one that repositions human rights morality within an ethical framework that reflects upon the causes and contexts of violence. It builds upon theories of embodied perception to offer a new perspective on the ethics of spectatorship, providing readers with fresh insights into how we respond to atrocity images and the ethical issues at stake.Covering a diverse spectrum of 21st century cinema, this book deals with documentary and fictional representations of atrocity such as state-sanctioned torture, genocide, enforced disappearance, deportation, and apartheid. It features close analysis of contemporary films, including Zero Dark Thirty, Standard Operating Procedure, Hotel Rwanda, Sometimes in April, Nostalgia for the Light, Chronicle of an Escape, Children of Men, District 9, Waltz With Bashir, and Paradise Now.

Book The Dark Side of Translation

Download or read book The Dark Side of Translation written by Federico Italiano and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-02-06 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We tend to consider translation as something good, virtuous and bright, but it can also function as an instrument of concealment, silencing and misdirection—as something that darkens and obscures. Propaganda, misinformation, narratives of trauma and imagery of the enemy—to mention just a few of the negative phenomena that shape our lives—show patterns of communication in which translation either functions as a weapon or constitutes a space of conflict. But what does this dark side of translation look like? How does it work? Ground-breaking in its theoretical conception and pioneering in its thematic approach, this book unites international scholars from a range of disciplines including philosophy, translation studies, literary theory, ecocriticism, game studies, history and political science. With examples that illustrate complex theoretical and philosophical issues, this book also has a major focus on the translational dimension of ecology and climate change. Transdisciplinary and topical, this book is key reading for researchers, scholars and advanced students of translation studies, literature and related areas. Chapter 8 of this book is freely available as a downloadable Open Access PDF under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license available at http://www.taylorfrancis.com/books/e/9780429321528

Book Illuminating The Dark Side of Occupation

Download or read book Illuminating The Dark Side of Occupation written by Rebecca Twinley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-10-18 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This innovative volume introduces Twinley’s concept of ‘The Dark Side of Occupation’. Focused on less explored and under-addressed occupations, it is an idea which challenges traditional assumptions around the positive, beneficial, health-promoting relationship between occupation and health. Emphasising that people’s individual experiences of occupations are not always addressed and may not always be legal, socially acceptable, or conducive to good health, the book investigates how these experiences can be explored theoretically, in practice and research, and in curriculum content for those learning about occupation. Beginning with a discussion of some assumptions and misunderstandings that have been made about the concept, the substantive chapters present and analyse tangible examples of the concept’s applicability. This ground-breaking and practice-changing text provides ideas for future research and highlights contemporary, internationally relevant issues and concerns, such as the coronavirus pandemic. This book is an essential purchase for students in occupational therapy and science, and valuable supplementary reading for practitioners. It is also relevant to a wide interdisciplinary audience with an interest in human occupation, encompassing anthropologists, councillors, criminologists, nurses, and human geographers.

Book The Dark Side of Innovation

Download or read book The Dark Side of Innovation written by Alex Coad and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-02-23 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a reaction to popular assumptions that innovation is always a force for good. While the popular press and politicians often take the view that "the more innovation, the better", the chapters in this edited volume reflect on the harmful effects of innovation on society and the environment. The book begins with a broad discussion of the dark side of innovation, followed by contributions by various experts in the area. It is a critical reply to the innovation optimists, complementing the list of indicators that show steady human progress with a list of indicators that show sustained deterioration (largely due to innovation). The volume outlines some relevant dimensions of harmful innovation, before distinguishing between the types of harm brought on by innovation. The various contributed chapters focus on the following themes: a bibliometric analysis of the scientific literature on the harmful consequences of innovation; harmful side-effects from solar photovoltaic waste; harmful consequences of process innovations on working practices in areas such as accountancy; the difficulties of transferring innovations from research to practice in clinical healthcare; and the harmful consequences of social innovations. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of the journal Industry and Innovation.
