Book excerpt: The Darkest Eyes is an epic portal-crossing adventure with mythic resonance and strong psychological underpinnings. Will Roan is at the top of her game career-wise. She's a deep-sea submersible pilot who's brainy, daring and cool. Her personal life couldn't be more different. For as long as she can remember, she's seen little gray aliens lurking in the shadows, watching her, stalking her. Although she's a scientist who tends to be inquisitive about everything, she has steadfastly refused to examine the disturbing things she's experienced throughout her life, fearing all she'd find would be evidence of her own mental instability. Her effort to present a sane exterior to the world has meant that she could never get too close to anyone or settle down anywhere. Physically and emotionally, she's always been on the run. Lately, though, the grays have been threatening to tear down the wall Will has erected between her inner life and the real world. They've been relentless in their pursuit, infringing on the semblance of normalcy she's constructed. When a particularly frightening encounter costs Will her job, she makes her way home. She's just in time for her dying mother -- her dying, crazy mother -- to give her an object that could explain away Will's madness or draw her inextricably into its clutches. A beautifully carved crystal skull holds the answers to the mystery of Will's life, her mother says. She can use it to cross a portal to Atlantis -- her real home. Will's first instinct is to run, but her flight is interrupted when her beloved young niece disappears, the apparent victim of the aliens. Will decides to plunge into the unknown to find young Becky. Atlantis is beautiful and unspoiled, and its people appear to be living their best lives. However, political intrigue and dissent simmer beneath the surface. Hesoa is a dying world, chaotic and reeking, populated by a race of gray aliens on the verge of extinction. Will must navigate the perils of both worlds to save the child -- and, it turns out, much more. Will is beset with self-doubt. Is she sane? Is anything she's experiencing real? Can she trust anyone? Is it possible that the fate of three worlds could depend on her?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study deals with the work of the most prolific Dutch book illuminators, the so-called Masters of the Dark Eyes, named after the most conspicuous aspect of their style: the dark, heavily accentuated shadows round the eyes of the figures. With their elaborately illuminated manuscripts, these masters completely dominated book production in the County of Holland during the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. Their work is characterized by an overwhelming wealth of decorative and pictorial richness, which is especially evident in the unusually ornate programmes of the Books of Hours, and a new type of border decoration derived from the Ghent-Bruges School. This style of painting was practised by many artists of differing talents, as demonstrated by the large number of surviving manuscripts. Not all of the illuminators worked in Holland. Some of them settled in the Southern Netherlands, others emigrated to England, where they illuminated manuscripts for members of the English court. This monograph seeks to order, analyze and evaluate the work of the Masters of the Dark Eyes, and to position their achievements within the context of book illumination in the Northern Netherlands during the 'Waning of the Middle Ages'. It explores a virtually uncharted territory of Dutch manuscript painting. The accompanying descriptive catalogue provides complementary information on more than 70 manuscripts, many of which have never been published at length before. The work is illustrated with a wide selection of colour and black-and-white reproductions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jacob Maxson is a twenty-one-year-old drifter who reluctantly returns home to the town of Lynx, Michigan. He is young, slender, and athletic, but still grieves for his dead mother and father. Then, Jake suddenly falls in love with a divorced nurse named Catherine Havenbeck. She is gentle, attractive, and compassionate, but suffers the deep burdens from her ill-fated marriage. However, a growing terror leads them on a harrowing journey through an unspeakable shroud of horror. This poetic story and many of the authors literary works await the reader in Denizens of the Dark Eyes. "Impressive work." - Writer's Digest International Self-Published Book Awards Judge's Commentary What did you like best about this book? I like the hard work reflected in these poems, well over 100 of them. The author clearly works and reworks his poems to get the rhyme and meter desired. He writes in tight, short lines, making the rhyming even more difficult; some lines have only four words and that's impressive work. I also liked his willingness to write about very personal topics, like "Ode to a Cancer Cell." And he also manages to capture hours of action into a few lines and make a statement about society as well in a poem like "Sunday Cinema." And I liked the use of metaphor as in "The Attic Upstairs" which speaks not only to objects that have been put away for storage but, of course, mental memorabilia as well. How can the author improve this book? My only suggestion for reconsideration, should this volume be reprinted, is the choice of titles. The title suggests a volume of dark poems, poems about loss and loneliness, about death and dying, about dead friends and frustrated dreams. While some poems touch on these subjects, the majority of the poems are not nearly as negative in nature and thus may either be missed by a reader thinking the title implies poems too negative to be enjoyed, or disappointing a reader looking for melancholy.

Book Behind Dark Eyes

Download or read book Behind Dark Eyes written by Jeff Apter and published by Woodslane Press. This book was released on 2021-03-05 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: He was the pop star with the raccoon eyes who sang ‘Hollywood Seven’ and ‘Six Ribbons’; the swashbuckling Pirate King in The Pirates of Penzance; the rocker who packed beer barns across Australia; and, in the words of Tim Rice, ‘a brilliantly judged and truly exciting’ Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar. On the small screen he was as comfortable portraying Bobby Rivers in All Together Now as he was Jonathan Garrett in Against the Wind. But there was a lot more to Jon English. He was a proud father of four who married his high school sweetheart. He was so devoted to the Parramatta Eels that he wrote one of their team songs. And he was also a composer whose rock opera, Paris, proved to be the biggest challenge of his life. Written with the full support of Jon’s family, friends and peers, Behind Dark Eyes swings from the massive highs of Jesus Christ Superstar and pop stardom to the turmoil brought about by creative frustration and depression - and Jon’s tragic death in 2016 at the age of 66.

Book excerpt: From the fog-shrouded bay of San Francisco to the dark cobblestone streets of Helsinki and all the hidden places in-between, The Blood is Love takes the reader on a sensual and twisted journey deep into Lenore and Solon's lush vampire world in this thrilling sequel to Black Sunshine. When Lenore Warwick turned twenty-one, she expected lots of bar-hopping, parties with friends, and the occasional hookup. What she got was the realization that she's both a witch and a vampire, and that there are things in this world that want her dead. Thank god she has her enigmatic vampire lover, Absolon Stavig, to help show her the ropes. But while Lenore struggles to fit into her new topsy turvy world, full of blood, sex, and magic, she also has to contend with her messy and complicated love for a vampire who isn't always what he seems. To make matters worse, her real father, Jeremias, a powerful warlock from the dark side, has professed an interest in her, while Solon's father, the depraved vampire king Skarde, is intent on destroying everything she loves. When Solon and Lenore have to travel to Finland to work alongside Solon's charming and vicious brother, Kaleid, in an attempt to defeat Skarde once and for all, the two of them enter a bloody new world that neither of them are prepared for. Even if their love survives the carnage to come, the chances of them getting out of there alive are slim. Good thing they like to take their chances.
